Inexpensive Tent Camping near Denver CO?

Some friends and I are heading up to the mountains for a quick weekend camping trip and need a good place to stay. I would prefer something rugged and private- nothing crowded or fancy (although I wouldn't complain if the site had a picnic table or fire pit) I'm looking for something within a two hour drive from south Denver- far enough into the mountains that it's cool at night, but close enough we can set up camp on Friday night. Also, we need a relatively large area because there will be at least two (possibly three) large tents.

Please include as many specifics as you can in your answers- any information is really appreciated!

You have a lot of possibilities. Inexpensive? How about free? The USDA National Forests allow what is called dispersed camping. This is camping outside a developed campground, and it's available all over Colorado.

Close to Denver, the Pike National Forest is one of our favorites. Take Hampden (US 285) into the mountains from Denver about 50 miles. On top of Kenosha Pass is a US Forest Service campground that costs about $15 per night. Just a few miles further is the town of Jefferson.

Turn left (east) in Jefferson, (there is only one street heading east out of town) and go 8 miles. The road starts to wind along a creek, and turn left where the sign says Lost Park Road. Once you cross the steel cattle guard 1/2 mile up the road, you are in the National Forest. The first road you come to on the right has many good large campsites. If you stay on the main road, there are also many open areas with great views. Set up your tent and have a great time.

What will i all need for a bike across the USA?

I will be camping, couch surfing, I have a bike, I'm getting a tent, inner tubes, spare brakes, tires, chain, lights, out door shower, tool knife. I don't want to carry many clothes so what are my choices there? Anything else? I'm planning on being outdoors alot. Thanks!

Most of the stuff you'll need is just camping gear but one item that most riders overlook is an umbrella. If you're riding for hours at a time in the sun you're going to want to take a break in the shade.

You may find two sets of clothes sufficient. There are laundromats in every major town so all you need to do is wear your clothes long enough to get to the next town. Just be sure to shower before you go to the laundromat because you'll need to change into clean clothes before you do your laundry. Although you can get away with two sets of clothes you should take lots of socks. You splash through one puddle and then your socks bunch up because they're wet, and that can get painful as the miles drag on. It can ruin your whole day if you don't have dry socks to change into.

The homeless shelters are frequently full because of the over abundance of homeless in the usa because of the recession.
And even when there are openings single fathers are frequently turned away.shanty town areas may have deviants and drug addicts but they are better than the alternatives ie no where at all to go when you need to go some where.

I think you are confused about what shanty towns are. What you are talking about are homeless shelters, which are limited by space and many of whom DO take children. Shanty towns are where people go who cannot get into shelters and are ramshackle contructions of tents, cardboard boxes, etc. Anybody can go there.
