My children and I have been tent camping regularly in National Forest areas and I would like to continue, but the recent bear attack on the poor boy in Utah has me thinking twice. I do not own a gun and so far have just followed the no food in camp rule as a precaution. What can I do to protect myself and my children other than not going?

Answer
I would get information on bear safety and stay away from areas that have seen many bears in the area. Here are some links to teach you about bear safety

I'm considering Highlands Hammock and Ocala for tent camping for a group of us for my birthday. Assuming we don't want primitive sites, which site #'s are the best for tent camping (privacy/location) for these parks or others in central or south florida?

Answer
If you REALLY want something nice, you might want to consider Fort DeSoto County Park in southern Pinellas County (Tampa Bay area).

Fort DeSoto's North Beach was named the #1 Beach in the U.S. (Hawaii included) in 2005! It sits on the Gulf, at the mouth of Tampa Bay!

You can go to http://www.fortdesoto.com/servlets/Page/camping for more info and to make reservations.

I want something I can tent camp in, but I don't want to do any back-country camping.

I've been looking at some of the state parks and although they do have tent sites available they also seem to be overrun with RVs and campers. I don't mind being nearby to other tent campers, but I guess I don't want to be stuck in the middle of a bunch of RVs.

Can anyone recommend a good place they've been camping at? I would also enjoy something with a lot of hiking trails.

Answer
You can camp at Horse ranch park. Bathroom facilities only but lovely place to camp. Not far from Lake Irwin. Lots of horse campers, but they won't bother you. The trails is fantastic. Lots of hiking. This place is just nothwest of Crested Butte, Co.

where are some excellent fishing lakes in co that have tent camping?

ppsutt

We live in NW CO and are looking for lakes to spin and bait cast for trout (or any fish for that matter) that are relatively close. We love to tent camp. Ideally we would be at as a secluded, treed site as possible near the water without much of a hike in as we are older. Thank you in advance and have a great day!

Answer
Northwest Colorado is pretty vague. If you live near Craig, then Flat Top Wilderness Area is close. If you live near Kremmling, then you should go to the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. If you are near Vail, then head for Holy Cross Wilderness Area. If you are near Carbondale, then look at Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area. White River National Forest has 2.3 million acres in which to find lakes and rivers.

What do I need to know about buying a camping tent?

best camping tent for 6 people image
Q. I have been shopping for an approximately 10x10 camping tent for car camping (not backpacking). I have looked online at REI, Campmor, EMS, Sierra Trading... and in the store at Walmart and Dick's Sporting goods. I've compared features so I know what's typically available. I'm trying to find out why there is such a huge variance in prices... what is the value of a $200 tent vs. an $80 one with nearly the same features. (is it the material?) I'm looking for other people's advice and experiences!

Answer
Things like double-layered fabric, sealed seams and ripstop fabric make for a better and more durable tent that will keep you warm & dry. Same goes for aluminum poles and stakes. I think REI gives really good value for the money, especially their campdome series - I have had one for years and it's still in great shape. They also are very easy to set up. If you plan to use it more than one or two times, a quality tent is worth the money. Sure, you could get the Motel 6 of tents, but I think the Holiday Inn Express is worth a few more dollars. I do not recommend the "Four Seasons" of tents (like Mountain Hardware or North Face) unless you've got $$ to burn or plan to use it more than you use your bed.

Do you ache all over after sleeping in the camping tent?

Anita

Every time after I sleeping in the camping tent I ached all over. I wonder is there anything I can do to make me sleep comfortably in the tent?

Answer
1. Choose a campsite with a level, smooth area in which to pitch your tent. Pitching your tent on a slope will lead to a night of tossing and turning as you roll gradually down the hill.

2. Select a site that isn't too close to the campground's bathrooms or trash dumpster, since these noises may keep you awake in the night.

3. Inflate a sleeping mat to your desired firmness. It's a good idea to make the mattress slightly firmer than you like in case any air leaks out in the night.

4.Choose a sleeping bag appropriate for the temperature you will be camping in to avoid being too hot or too cold.

5. Put your sleeping bag and pillow on top of the sleeping mat. If you feel yourself slide within your sleeping bag, that means you aren't on level ground. Move to a more level part of the tent, if possible.

6. Keep extra blankets handy in case the temperature drops during the night.

My husband and I recently got an RV and have been taking our 2 small boys camping for about the past year. What are the best campgrounds that are the most kid friendly. We have 1 year old and 3 year old boys.

Answer
If I could I would stay at the Disney Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. You can stay there and enjoy all the ammenities of a Disney resort without even having to pay to go to the parks. There is a pool, horseback riding, tennis, archery, crusing on the Disney lakes, petting zoo, playgrounds and so much more. Be sure to click the link on the sources section, for much more detailed info from www.allears.net.

Here's a little more info:
There are 788 conventional campsites at FW located in 20 loops (100 through 2000). Most sites are fairly secluded from one another by a generous growth of brush and trees between sites. All campsites are back-ins and are a combination of paved driveway, which range in length from 25 to 60 feet, and sandy pad. Each site is approximately 25 feet wide and comes with a picnic table and charcoal grill. All sites have electricity (20/30/50 amps) and city water. There are 695 full hookup sites that also provide sewer. The 90 partial hookup sites, primarily used by tent campers and those with tent trailers, are located on loops 1500 and 2000.

It used to be that you couldn't have a campfire at the sites, because they worried about people letting them get out of control etc. But! this policy changed.

You can bring in your own contained campfire unit. Typically, stores call them firepits or outdoor fireplaces. It's a solid metal bottom on short legs with metal mesh sides and a top. A mesh top is okay at all campsites EXCEPT any of those that are creekside. If you have a creekside spot, you must have a solid metal top for your firepit. This is to better prevent embers from spreading to the greater amount trees and foliage (and wildlife) that are around the creeks. For example, the creek/dog walk along Loop 300 has a large wooded area with deer, eagles, armadillos and more making their home there.

Of course, Fort Wilderness also has the Campfire Program where you can enjoy campfires as well as everything offered at this special program.

I would recommend Ocala National Forest. Get a Primitive site. I can recommend hopkins prairie. It is a very small campground, so there aren't a lot of people there. Also the Florida Scenic Trail runs through it.

Are waterparks and outdoor pools open in September in Myrtle Beach?

Ann Onimou

When do they usually close for the season? My husband wants to go to Myrtle Beach for our 'summer vacation' but in September when it's a little cheaper. Will the waterparks or most campsite's outdoor pools and water attractions still be open?

If you know of any good places to stay in Myrtle beach (camping in a tent trailer with a toddler for under 30$ a night), that'd be a great help too.

Thanks!

Answer
There is a reason why it is cheaper in the off-season. It is the off-season. Consider where waterparks get cheap, temporary labor: students who are back in school during September. Family Kingdom closure date: September 4.

Myrtle Waves Water Park closure: September 6, 7, 8, 9, then open 10, 11.

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

I haven't been camping in a long time.. and the last time I went it was spring or winter. But its summer now and my boyfriend wants me to go with him. I know to take water and drink lots of it but does anybody have any ideas on how to keep cool? And ill be in the desert. Do you think it'll be okay to wear shorts?

Answer
Shorts can be OK if your skin is happy with them but long loose pants will keep the Sun off better. They don't get too hot if you get them with wide loose flappy legs.
Wear loose tops with plenty of ventilation.
Arabians don't wear shorts or skin-fit pants in the desert.
They wear loose fitting stuff. They've been there a long time.
If the material is light still use the sunblock under it. Sun can burn you right through thin cotton pants and tops , even loose ones but loose is a lot better than tight. See the link below.
Otherwise wear a sarong like the Indians and Malaysians do. They suit long loose tops a treat.
OK for the boys too. Men in Malaysia wear them with bright shirts or with western style jackets. I lived there a few years.
They are very comfortable to wear.
It's just a tube of light material you can wrap around you in one or two layers, roll it over at the top for a built-in band and tuck one end in under itself like a bath towel gets fitted..
Get it right you can run it it all day. Not in the desert without training though.
A friend just came back from South Africa where he ran a full 26 mile marathon in 40C heat.
He's 68. No problems. Used to it
Keep exercise slow enough to avoid overheating. Pace yourself for the conditions.
In the hottest part of the day, rest up in shade. Take some shade if you don't have natural shade. A washing line and a piece of cloth. Rig it up so you can rest under it in shade and keep whatever breeze there is flowing around you. Tents get too hot.
Morning and evening are activity time. Midday and early to mid afternoon are siesta time
Change it as you can to suit best what you plan to do on the trip but always err on the side of safety.

Get a wide brimmed hat, some good sunglasses and Piz Buin or similar Factor 50 sunblock.
That Piz Buin is used by mountaineers and skiers where UV is a big problem on bright sunny days high up.
Good in desert too. I used it in the Atacama and I always have some when I go the mountains.
Get it from sports and outdoor shops or online.
Great place, the Atacama. Driest desert in the world, but you can still live.

You need plenty to drink. Freezer blocks can last a while in an insulated bag or make a bag or box from polystyrene foam and newspaper. Large Thermos flasks are OK for a while as well. Gives you a start anyway.
Fill it with water leaving plenty of room for ice expansion, screw it up tight and put the whole lot in the freezer the day before you go.
Wrap it in newspaper, then a plastic bag, and pack stuff round it.That's cool water for tomorrow if the flask is big enough to last. The bigger they are the longer they take to warm up.
You can get coolers that work by evaporation but they use up water. OK if there's a creek handy.
Otherwise just keep the water containers in shade as much as you can.
Eat well, no junk. You need to stay healthy.
Have a great time.
Fun in the Sun..walkies.

What kind of supplies would you need for a hot air balloon trip?

Millie

I'm doing a report and I need to know what kind of supplies should you take or need for a hot air balloon trip.
Just some ideas :)

Answer
You need warm clothing. It gets cold upstairs in the sky.
You need food. Nutritious food that isn't too heavy or bulky. And enough water for tea or coffee and for cooking. Packet soups and dehydrated meals are common rations for long balloon flights.
You need first aid equipment and some basic survival gear like a sleeping bag, a lightweight tent, camp stove or a means of making a fire ...but you will have a lighter for the gas burners on the balloon and hopefully some gas left for cooking with .....in case you come down in a remote place which sometimes can't be avoided.
You need parachutes in case of failure of the balloon fabric or of the gas burners because then you can just drop out of the sky very fast. Some balloon baskets have parachutes fitted but it's sometimes best to wear one and jump out in the less sophisticated variety.
Landing in the basket in high winds can be big time trouble.
I was made an honorary member of a hot air balloon club in Germany after seeing a balloon in trouble and running over to help while on a walk round the fields close to where I lived at that time. I was able to get a thrown rope wound round a tree to act as a brake and then stop the basket being dragged even further and damaging more crops or causing serious injury to the two balloonists.
I then helped with collapsing and folding the envelope which was easier with three people than two in the high wind. They are huge when laid out on the ground and in a wind they can be very troublesome to fold.
The balloon was made in Bristol in south west England by Cameron balloons who I had visited some years before and Bristol is still a world class centre of balloon construction.
The guys were quite envious but pleased that their rescue was aided by somebody with an interest, though I had never been up in a balloon, only a watcher.
I later enjoyed several flights with them, fortunately in good weather.
http://www.cameronballoons.co.uk/cgi-bin/open.cgi . . . . .
If the weather gets really rough it's usually best to just get out of the sky but landing can be very tricky in bad weather and it's one of the most dangerous times of many balloon flights, with the basket being dragged along the ground or caught in trees or power cables if the weather is so bad there isn't enough control over the balloon.
A grappling hook can be used as anchor and to slow the basket as the hook digs into the ground as the basket is carried along but it doesn't work on all terrain and sometimes can't be used because of the conditions.
Speed itself is not the problem at high altitude.
Long flights often take advantage of jet streams traveling at over 200mph. Close to the ground 40nph winds can be a nightmare.
As well as a bumpy and potentially lethal landing the fabric of the balloon (the envelope in balloon talk ) can be badly damaged. They cost a fortune and a replacement may take a long time to get ready.
Mishandling can also cause a lot of damage. Balloon fabric must be handled the right way.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/branson-blames-algerians-as-balloon-dream-fades-1288736.html . . . . . .
You'll need a map covering a large area so you can see where the wind is taking you.
Towns and roads look just like the map from a high viewpoint so it's even easier than map reading on the ground except when low cloud gets in the way and then you need x-ray eyes.
GPS units make it easy but you must allow for your altitude when using them or you can be a few miles wrong.
An international phrase book is a worthwhile addition to the gear since you might land in any country on long flights, from UK and Europe anyway and most parts of Africa.
The instruments on the balloon include an altimeter, a rate of ascent or descent meter, and a thermometer, and a short wave radio for communications plus another as a back-up radio.
Weather forecasts for the area you are traveling toward are very important so you can get out of trouble early enough to avoid a forced landing which may result in injury or death.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hMypTa0D2nd3ZF2qVoTszw99zmgwD9IIV86O0?docId=D9IIV86O0 . . . . .
The ground team see to weather forecast relays on long distance flights and an ordinary broadcast band radio is useful too. Small world band radios are commonly carried by balloonists, pilots, sailors etc as a back-up to the normal communications systems for weather information and they work well high in the air except for some VHF broadcasts.
The gas cylinders providing the heating fuel for hot air balloons have a meter so you know how much gas you've got left.
You also need tools and materials for repairs and maintenance of the burners and the basket and the equipment that's carried and enough batteries to keep everything working.
You will also need oxygen and masks for high level flights.
Altogether a balloon flight over a long distance with two people in the basket can take around 70-100 lbs of equipment and rations.
For very long flights at high altitude the equipment and rations, water, oxygen, etc, can weigh over 200 lbs.
A recent event had balloons traveling several thousand miles as a distance competition and in those kinds of events you have no idea how long you'll be up there for and where you'll be coming down so being frugal with the food rations and water is a good idea but you still have to eat and drink enough to stay fit and alert.

In 1999 the first circumnavigation of the world by balloon was made by two people in the Breitling Orbiter balloon and took 20 days.
The first solo round the world by balloon followed three years later, by the English balloonist and explorer Steve Fosset.
Scroll right down to the last few years of ballooning.

Where can I buy extra long tent stakes for beach camping?

best tent for snow camping on tent on the forest image by Galyna Andrushko from Fotolia.com
best tent for snow camping image

Glenn Beck

Some friends and I are camping at on the beach this summer. Every guide I've read about beach camping says that we must get extra long stakes because of the sand. I'm having a hard time finding these - does anyone know a good store to buy them at, or what terminology I should use to search for them online?

Thanks!

Answer
You need curved or v section pegs, not the straight rod type unless they are very long ....and then you find a rock buried eight inches down just where you're knocking the peg in. Beaches do that deliberate..
If you can find some pegs with a saw-tooth edge, even better.
You can get thick plastic ones like that or straight-edged, quite cheaply, or wide alloy pegs fairly cheap or stainless steel, even titanium...very expensive for those..
Wide pegs can be shorter than thin ones and then you get still more grip in the sand without having to go very deep.
Another trick is to put heavy rocks over the pegs. Bang or push the pegs right in to the sand so they're flush, and use big hopefully flattish rocks so they don't tip or roll, to put some weight on them. Same on snow. Pile some rocks over the pegs and build a bank of snow along the sides and back of the tent for better stability. Some tents have snow valances for doing that...very handy.
You can also use boulders to tie onto, scooping sand out from the base to get low. Sometimes handy for one peg at least to get a good fix in one corner and use the boulder for shelter or privacy. Put the cord through the peg loop and right round the boulder, then tighten up and tie it off. Put the sand over again and you've got a low fixing without using a peg.
Of course sands vary like soils vary. On the west coast of Denmark we drove a convoy of big Army trucks right along the beach for twenty miles on the hard sand ....as good as a road.
Even cycling on it on holiday later was a dream....not hard going at all..
Normal pegs were fine in it too.
Here are some sand and snow stakes...a lot of companies make similar ones.

What are some good snow areas that I can rent a cabin in northern california?

Joseph

Friends an I are planing a get away for late.january or early february, its about 15 of us, does anybody knw of nice sites, with good cabins where we can snow board for the first time and use sleds and what not? Itll be our first time going to the snow..

Answer
Many places around Lake Tahoe can help you out. Since you want to snow board and that requires a lift ticket, I suggest not getting a cabin, but staying at one of the resorts. I'll name a few where they have accommodations:
Squaw Valley
Northstar
Heavenly Valley
Sugar Bowl
If you still want a cabin, look for one in or near Tahoe City to be close to several resorts. Another option is to tent camp or RV at Sugar Pine Point resort where you can do cross country right outside your RV.
BTW, my son is a snow board instructor and he highly suggest you take a lesson to learn to snowboard, especially since none of you have even been to the snow before.

My family and I are going camping. There will be my husband and I along with three children. We will be tent camping and need some ideas for some easy, yet satisfying snacks. Snacks can be kept in our cooler or dry. We prefer snacks that take little to no preparation. Thanks!!

Answer
That's great you are going camping, we camp every weekend. I usually take things like those p'nut butter sandwhich crackers, smores are great but remember the chocolate melts and so do the marshmallows into one icky mess. Trail mix is good, the kind you make yourself with m&m's, marshmallows, raisins, etc. (keep in cool place). Go-gurt, poptarts, apples, oranges, watermelon and cantelope already cubed. Cheez-it's too.
Do forget to pick up some glow sticks (necklaces) for the kids at night, they love them.

How to choose a family base camping tent?

Ivy

I am planning to buy a family camping tent, what things should I consider?

Answer
1. Consider how many people will be sleeping in the tent and if you'll be requiring one or two tents to house everyone. Make sure you have enough room for everyone to be comfortable. Every tent has its dimensions specified on the package, listing how many people it will house and how big it is. If you're looking for roomy comfort, subtract the number of people the tent says it will hold by one or two.

2. Figure out what style of tent will best suit your needs. There are two basic types of tents: dome and cabin. While there are a variety of styles of both, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. A dome tent is easier to assemble, having only two poles for the tent and one for the top cover. Since it's shaped like a dome, you'll give up some space in its height. A cabin tent offers more room since it is built in a square shape, but because it has more poles, it can take longer to assemble and be heavier to carry. If you're looking to house more than four people comfortably and have only one tent, a cabin tent is probably the best option.

3. Consider what extra requirements you need in your tent to properly accommodate you and your group. Do you want an extra attached screen room or a tent with several rooms? Do you have a tall person in the pack that will want to stand up straight while inside the tent? Will you be spending large amounts of time inside the tent? All of these things need to be thought out before you buy a tent. There are many varieties of tents on the market that come at a variety of prices.

4. Think about the area where you will be setting up your base camp tent and what the weather will be like. If you'll be camping in a cold region, you don't want a tent that has a screened top with a liner that allows more air inside. You also don't want a tent that allows little ventilation if you're staying in a hot area.

5. Consider the camping experience of the people you're camping with. If you're a novice camper, you might want a tent that's easy to set up. Generally, the fewer poles you have to deal with, the easier it is to set up and take down and the lighter weight.

I love Rocky Mountain National Park, located just north of Denver, Colorado. There are great hiking trails thoughout the park, but for inexperienced hikers I would recommend the hike to the Pool or Calypso Cascades in the Wild Basin area.

There are five drive-in campgrounds and one drive-in group camping area in the park. Three campgrounds, Moraine Park, Glacier Basin, and Aspenglen, take reservations, as does the group-camping area. Other park campgrounds are first-come, first-served, and fill on most summer days. There are no electric, water or sewer hookups at any campsites. I always stay at Aspenglen in the east side of the park.

Aspenglen Campground (8200 ft), located on US Route 34 just west of the Fall River Entrance Station has 54 sites.

â¢Opens at noon May 26, 2010; closes at noon September 25, 2010.
â¢Reservations accepted and recommended.
â¢Camping fee is $20/site/night.
â¢Recreational vehicle and trailer length limit is 30 feet.
â¢A Loop: tents only, including walk-ins; B Loop: no generators allowed; C Loop: generators allowed.

Tent Camping

Answer
I live in the Denver area. When I want to go camping I go up to Estes Park and camp at Rocky Mountain Nation Park. It's really nice up there. Also, sometimes we stay in the cabins at YMCA of the Rockies, that is really nice too.

I drive a 20 foot camper van. I *do not want hookups, too expensive*. Just tent camping / primitive camping where you can park your vehicle on site. The cheaper the better. Anywhere in the Albany area you'd recommend? It's hard to find camping open this late in the year.

Where to go camping inexpensively and without a car near NYC?

Need a fairly cheap tent campground with basic bathroom and drinking water facilities near hiking trail(s). Looking to head there Friday evening after work and return Sunday evening on a train and/or bus.

Thanks!

Answer
Floyd Bennett Field
Manhattanites have always considered Brooklyn to be something of a wilderness, but it may still come as a surprise to learn that you can actually camp thereâand weâre not talking about sleeping on the sidewalk. This abandoned-airport-turned-national-park in Marine Park has room for about 100 campers, each site with a fire pit and picnic tableâand not much else. (It may be the only place in New York City where holes in the ground are considered acceptable bathroom facilities.) Itâs a little slice of serenityâ¦with bonus noise from JFK-bound planes that occasionally fly nearby!
Price: $50 per campsite for a three-night stay.
Getting there: Take the 2 or 5 train (at rush hour) to Flatbush Avenue and transfer to the Rockaway Parkâbound Q35 bus. Call 718-338-3799 for reservations.

My family is looking to go camping this summer, again, we just got back from tent camping for a couple of days at McGrath State Beach in Ventura and it was actually really great! just a bit on the pricey side though.
I've seen the forest service camp site listings but a lot of their information is outdated and inaccurate. Do you guys have any suggestions, preferably in the SoCal area, details would be great! thanx in advance!

Answer
If you think McGrath is nice, try Carpinteria. You'll never go back. VERY family friendly, loads of fun, beach camping at it's finest.

El Capitan and Refugio are also nice. At this time of year, you'll have to check reservamerica every day to try to find a cancellation.

Note that Leo Carillo State PARK is not on the beach, but on the other side of PCH. I dislike Leo Carillo because the beach is too rocky.

Down South, Doheny is good.

Further south, San Clemente, San Elijo and South Carlsbad are OK, but you have to hike down those steps to get to the beach, then hike back up to get to your campsite on the bluffs. Pretty tiring.

Good luck!

How to choose a family base camping tent?

How do I go "real camping?"?

Michael

I dont want to go camping when you have a specific place to set up, showers, electricity, ECT...
I want to go camping like on a trail that is rugged, is more than 10 miles and you will not meet alot of people.
1- what should i bring? and 2-I live in New York city. what place should i go to?

Answer
Harriman State Park is 45 mins outside NYC and is a good place to start. they have a few leanto`s if you dont want to carry a tent and there are plenty of areas to just pitch a tent. There are no amenities, so pack it in pack it out. You can go to EMS (theres one downtown) or Paragon (also downtown) and pick up the map set for Harriman ($20) There are trails there for everyone, from easy fire roads to trails where you have to scramble up rock and pass your pack up to the next person and then everything in between. If you want specifics feel free to email me for recommendations on spots.

Be sure to bring the 10 backpacking essentials, you`ll need them. (Just google it if you dont know what they are, its a laundry list of essential items) Bring a backpacking stove if you plan on boiling water for you meals or for drinking. I`d recommend bringing a water filter to pump your water from the streams and lakes. Nothing like having fresh cold water, rather than warm flat water that was just boiled. Then a tent or tarp to sleep under (I use a Hennessy Hammock- no need to worry about level ground, sticks, roots, rocks etc) Be sure to bring rain gear and warm clothing, the weather changes quick as you pass through valleys and over the ridges.

There is also the Delaware Water Gap and the Catskills not too far away either. The AT is pretty disappointing near NYC as it passes through peoples backyards and you can hear the highway traffic not too far off. My favorite nearby portion is the Delaware Water Gap to Port Jervis- about 62 miles. I think Harriman is the most suitable for you on one of your first "real backpacking" trips
I'm just curious but how old are you?
If you have any specific questions feel free to email me.

where would be the best place to tent camp at the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap?

Answer
You can try the state parks or forests in the area.

High point isn't far and has tent camping.
Stokes State Forest is beautiful and has camping.

Worthington State Forest is on the NJ side and in the Water Gap National Rec Area. This site will help you there:

tents for camping under $100 image

I am trying to build one of those tents you find at a carnival for a fortune teller. The type that looks sort of medieval (dark, rich colors, etc). Is it possible to do this for under $100? Most instructions I have found seem to cost hundreds of dollars.

Answer
You can go get a lot of brightly colored sheets at the thrift store or bargin store and drape them on ropes and a few poles to create your tent. Get someone who is familiar with tents - someone who likes to camp a lot - to help you. It should be easy peasy for $100.

Any suggestions for a good sleeping bag?

Kalout

I want to get a new sleeping bag for my camp trips. I wanted to be warm, at least a 20 degree one, and easily compressible. Most of all I need it under $100 (if it goes over its fine). Any suggestions?

Answer
There are alot of models that fit this description, so I'll just help your search.

1) Look for a fleece sleeping bag liner. They keep your bag warmer, and they are easier to wash than a whole bag. Also, they can serve as a super lightweight and compact bag alone during the warm summer months. A fleece liner and a sleeping pad can be pretty comfortable.

2) Always look for a bag which is 20 degrees cooler than what you expect you might sleep in, because gear companies tend to exaggerate the performance of their bags.

3) Make sure that it is made of synthetic materials. Something made with cotton might looking comfy in the store, but you will regret it when you wake up with a bag that has absorbed all the condensation in your tent and you have to carry a heavy, wet bag around.

Which is the nearest and cheapest campsite near Disneyland paris?

cheap tents for camping uk image

Devious Jo

I'm looking for a campsite in Paris which is cheap and preferably has holiday homes or permanent tents. Will be going to Disneyland so need the campsite at a good distance :)
Thanx guys :D

Answer
Well Davy Crockett Ranch which is one of Disneyland Resorts owned Hotels has campsites and cabins. The campsites do not have permanent tents but the Cabins that they have are great and have Kitchenette with the cookware that your will need as well as a TV, Phone and such. They are about 2 Kilometers from Disneyland so about a 15 minute drive and if you have a car with you they will not charge you to park in the Disneyland Paris lot if you chose to drive yourself each day to the park. Also since this is Disney owned you are able to book a package deal through there web-site a may get 40% off of what it costs, plus there site always has the best deals around. Here is that website:

http://offers.disneylandparis.co.uk/special-offers/lm-offer-get-xy-off.xhtml
http://hotels.disneylandparis.co.uk/hotels/davy-crockett-ranch/index.xhtml

There is also Camping les Etangs Fleuris, Touquin which is a 20 minute drive to Disneyland Paris they do have tents and motor homes to rent, they do not have transportation to Disneyland so you will have to find your way to Disneyland Paris or drive your self and pay the fee to park in the Disneyland Paris Lot. Here is there web-site for you to look at

http://www.caravancampingsites.co.uk/france/77/etangsfleuris.htm

There is Le Chêne Gris which is 20 minutes from Disneyland Paris and has a train station available nearby. I believe they do already have permanent tents, but I don't remember. Here is there website to look at:

I hope this helps you and enjoy! *Jena

What's a good, cheap, tent campground in southern Florida?

daniel k

I'm looking for a place to camp out for a couple of weeks just to get away from everything. I'd prefer the following attributes:

- Tent sites not right next to RV's
- Bath house (to relieve myself)
- On or within biking distance to a beach.
- Not too expensive. Under $20 would be good, but the cheaper the better.
- Not dangerous (like, I don't want to get stabbed to death in the middle of the night)

Best camping areas in Michigan?

cheap tent camping in michigan image

Sexy Chica

My husband and I are planning a trip to Mackinac Island Michigan. On our way home we would like to do some tent camping with our 2 kids. What are some of the best camping areas in the state of Michigan based on your experience? thanks for your help.

Answer
Straits State Park (lower) is pretty good. I'm not sure about construction on the Bridge, it was down to one lane earlier. Hartwick Pines near Grayling was okay. So were Harrisville and Twas City State Parks. Ludington SP is my preferred, but with 12 inches of rain a few weeks ago, I would call first.

Not to be a smart a%$ but What is meant by "best"? and home? Is this best for the kids, cheapest, best attractions, modern, semi modern, or rustic camping site? And at least which direction or quarter of the State would you consider?

There are State campgrounds that have Teepee's and Yurts which might appeal to the kids. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_24196---,00.html

The State of Michigan tourism website http://michigan.org will have information about camping near most cities. Look under Places to Stay

You can also search by map on the States website http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/parkmap.aspx

Or at http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/Default.aspx?SearchType=campgrounds

Campground Experiences can be found
http://michigan.org/Experiences/Recent/Default.aspx?ip=B511

or in a book by Tom Powers (4th edition) or map book by Sportsman's Connection websites are below. Tom gives an honest assessment of each park.

Best campgrounds in Michigan ?

I'm in Grand Rapids and am willing to travel to the right spot.

I'm looking for a good affordable campground with easy access to tubing, fishing, and bike trails. I can tent camp or would like to cabin or bunk camp if the price is right. a place with cheap kayak / canoe rental would be a plus.

thanks!
