We have two old dogs that do not like to play with other dogs or kids, so campgrounds are not a good place for them. We can either car camp or tent camp- just not with close neighbors. We were thinking Olympic Peninsula, but that is negotiable. Any ideas? And thanks for looking!

Answer
You can camp in our National Forests... if you drive down and of the forest roads (the gravel ones) you'll see places along the side where people have camped before.. you'll see fire rings to use.. BUT these places do not have running water or bathroom, so you'll be primitive camping (where you have to bring all your water to drink and cook with).

I would highly suggest buying Don Wright's Guide to Free Campgrounds. It's a book (an east and west addition) that lists campgrounds in forests and other secluded places that are free and $12 and under for one night's stay. I use it as my camping bible.. I don't want to stay where RVs and generators are... I suggest you get a copy.. it will help you plan your trip better.
Good luck & have fun camping!

How uncomfortable could tent camping be at the Grand Canyon's south rim be in mid November?

veropie13

Weather forecasts are clear and sunny to partly sunny ranging from 9-56 degrees Fahrenheit with no severe wind. I've never been camping in cold weather with a 5 and 3 year old. Been told that the GC is beautiful in fall. Any advice?

Answer
Thanks Steve
This isn't really a GCNP question; it's more of a sleeping in a tent in really cold weather at 7000' question
If you're sleeping outside once you get below around 25 F you are dealing with a new world that has new rules and new strategies to deal with such as:
Peeing before you go to sleep b/c sleeping with a full bladder will drop your core temp
Sleeping with your boots inside of your sleeping bag
If you put bottles of warm water inside of a wool sock and then inside of your boots.you will have a pre-warmed sleeping bag and liquid water in the AM
Make 100% sure that the bottles don't leak
Sleeping with your mini -flashlight and digital camera inside of your sleeping bag b/c batteries die real quickly as the temp drops
Not using any kind of air mattress under you b/c the convective property of air will rob you of heat :Use closed cell foam instead
In cold weather I normally sleep in poly-pro long johns ,a wool beanie and wool fingerless gloves ..and then i graze on hi-calorie food during the night
I once came within 400' of literally dying of hypothermia while hiking the White Mountains of NH...so I take hypothermia seriously
I'm a big strong person with huge amounts of energy reserves ...and still I almost died within sight of safety
However if I was a 3 or a 5 year old child I of course wouldn't have anywhere near those kind of reserves and if I was the parent of those children I would be very aware of how easy it would be for their core temps to drop and how hard it would be to get those temps back up to where they need to be
Just so you know there is a clinic in GCNP But the nearest hospital is in Flagstaff which is at least an overland hour away
Speaking of Flag ,Peace Surplus will rent you zero degree bags.Since you're not going to be carrying them weight is not an issue so save the money and get a synthetic bag or two
http://www.peacesurplus.com/
If you place the two children in one bag and yourself in the other you might be able to do this safely
Oh yeah GCNP is really pretty in late Fall [even more so if it snows ] and the smell of burning the Ponderosa pine that the lodges burn just fills the air
Enjoy the Park

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

best tent camping death valley image

BB

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

Does anybody know where people stay when they go camping to Death Valley ?

christophe

I heard that people have built homes underneath the surface of the valley because of the extreme heat conditions there are. Is that true?

Answer
Considering they have several campsites in the National Park, I'd say they sleep in tents or if they're fancy, RV's.

I was just answering some questions about camping, and someone said that they are in the ACF and were wondering what to pack. I googled ACF and got some interesting responses, but nothing seems to fit.

Answer
The ACF is the Army Cadet Force =D
They do assorts like camping shooting (targets), flying camps oversees =D

I was in the ATC (Air Training Corps) who are ace! They are the Royal Air Force's version or the ACF.

So obviously I would think that they are better ;)
lol

We did an excercise in the moors where we had to escape from an "enemy prison camp". We were running from a hunter force for a week and we had to camp in tents each night. It was ace!

So yeah the ACF is the Army Cadet Force and yes they do camp but with a lot of other things aswell

What is the Name of the New Target Commercial for August/September 2008?

Target has a new add out that I saw just a few days ago, but it could have been released last month. What I'd like to know is the name of the song in the new commercial? It's not the one with the two girls dancing in the dorm room, but the one after that. I believe near the end there is a nighttime scene of a backyard with a camping tent it it.

Are waterparks and outdoor pools open in September in Myrtle Beach?

Ann Onimou

When do they usually close for the season? My husband wants to go to Myrtle Beach for our 'summer vacation' but in September when it's a little cheaper. Will the waterparks or most campsite's outdoor pools and water attractions still be open?

If you know of any good places to stay in Myrtle beach (camping in a tent trailer with a toddler for under 30$ a night), that'd be a great help too.

Thanks!

Answer
There is a reason why it is cheaper in the off-season. It is the off-season. Consider where waterparks get cheap, temporary labor: students who are back in school during September. Family Kingdom closure date: September 4.

Myrtle Waves Water Park closure: September 6, 7, 8, 9, then open 10, 11.

We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

What are some must-have snacks while camping?

candace191

My family and I are going camping. There will be my husband and I along with three children. We will be tent camping and need some ideas for some easy, yet satisfying snacks. Snacks can be kept in our cooler or dry. We prefer snacks that take little to no preparation. Thanks!!

Answer
That's great you are going camping, we camp every weekend. I usually take things like those p'nut butter sandwhich crackers, smores are great but remember the chocolate melts and so do the marshmallows into one icky mess. Trail mix is good, the kind you make yourself with m&m's, marshmallows, raisins, etc. (keep in cool place). Go-gurt, poptarts, apples, oranges, watermelon and cantelope already cubed. Cheez-it's too.
Do forget to pick up some glow sticks (necklaces) for the kids at night, they love them.

We are looking for a place where we can drive to a campsite, then pitch our tent. So many campsites either require you to backpack in your stuff, or they are just for you to park your RV.

Any ideas... our tent is fairly large.

Answer
I've camped on the Blue Ridge parkway, at the Smokies, at Mount Mitchell State Park, NC (you can camp at the top at the state park or there are private campgrounds below it), New River State Park, NC (there are drive in and canoe in sites), Stone Mountain State Park, NC, and I've wanted to camp at South Mountain State Park, NC.

In Hot Springs, NC the private campground is on the French Broad River, on the Appalachian Trail, has a great little town, and has hot tubs!

I've camped in NC in Nantahala National Forest , Linville Gorge, Roan Mountain, TN area, and wanted to camp in Mt Rogers, Joyce Kilmer and Shining Rock areas, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Hi

What's the best place to camp in the adirondacks NY and close to the nyc? Camp site that has decent hiking trails, water fall, or maybe rafting and fun things to do.

Answer
Do you know that the Adirondacks is the largest National Park in the US, bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined? There are hundreds of camping areas, dozens of lakes and waterways and thousands of miles of trails. There is no "best" place to camp, almost every area is great in some way. If you want to be as close to New York City as possible, and it sounds like you want outfitter provided experiences like rafting and car-camping tent sites, I suggest you look on line at commercial campgrounds around the Lake George and Glens Falls areas, less than an hour north of Albany. These sites will have photos and descriptions of the resources and scenery in those areas.

http://www.adirondackcampgrounds.com
http://www.lakegeorge.com/camping/

Because August is a peak month for camping in the 'Dacks, it would be best if you made sure you had a reservation at any campsite before heading up there -- don't count on being able to just drop in wherever you want this time of year.

Where is the best place in Yosemite to fish and camp?

My family and I will be going camping to Yosemite. We want to camp near a place that we can fish such as a River (preferably). Where is a good campsite that we could stay at near a good fishing place and not to crowded with people? Any ideas???

Answer
The Bridalveil Creek Campground lies along Glacier Point Road, 25 miles from the Yosemite Valley, at an elevation of 7,200 feet. It is open from June through September with sites available on a first come, first served basis. There are 110 sites available, that can accommodate RVs, trailers and tents. Each site contains a picnic table and fire pit. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets and a dump station. Pets are permitted at this site. Campers can enjoy fishing, hiking, backpacking and scenic driving from this location.

I enjoy both tent camping & pop-up trailer camping. Any infor would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Yes, there are lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation in Arizona. Unfortunately, the Grand Canyon State's wild character is being compromised by runaway growth. Too many acres of desert are being bulldozed to make room for cookie-cutter McMansion subdivisions, and there is not enough water to sustain the people that are already here. People from more affluent parts of the country (like California) are trying to price me out. I've lived in Arizona my entire life, and I think that it's great so many people love it here, but something really needs to be done limit the growth. People are loving Arizona to death.

All the state parks are pretty nice but expensive. You don't say what style of camping you are doing. Tent, camper, backpacking? Hocking hills is very nice. Any of the reservoirs (Burr Oak, Seneca lake) have camping. Over in your part of the state you are not too far from Ohio Power rec area. Good fishing and cheap camping there, if you are into that sort of thing. You can get a free permit on line. These people may be a corp. but they have the cheapest camping in Ohio. Look around their pages. Here is a link to apply for a permit. http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx But West Virginia is very nice, if you want to go that far. My bit top end fave is way up at the top of Scotland at Cape Wrath.
The campsite bar is the village pub becaause the other option is the community hall with a bar, a long mile up a steep hill away and the next one is on the road to Tongue...but....yeah, that's a nice pub. Brill... If you have a driver who isn't drinking.

Good place in England to go camping with friends near a beach?

Jamie

Hey guys, me and some friends are planning to go camping for a few days in the summer holidays. We're looking for somewhere really nice with a beach but not somewhere too overpopulated, tacky or somewhere deserted.

Basically we want to chill on a beach at night with a fire, bbq and some alcohol just have a laugh.

We're located in the South but can drive or get the train any reasonable distance say 4 hours away.

Answer
Almost every bit of beach in UK fires are illegal. Far out places and proper smoke control maybe you'll get away with it but the fines can be very heavy. A couple of big portables stoves would be a better idea but the atmosphere isn't the same sat around a stove with a couple of guitars.
I've camped in every county along the south coast on beaches, the Purbeck Hills, South Downs, Dartmoor, Exmoor, all sorts, scrimmed up in a small green tent and with fires that are very well controlled.
I was an outdoor instructor in the Army so I can do 'stealth' fires and stay hidden reasonably OK, but every fire sends a signal of sorts either on the wind or by eye. Keeping the signal low is the idea.
That's not the idea with a big fire to sit around happily boozing and singing or whatever.
The ...maybe best....OK, I'll spill it out....best beach I know for convenience versus scenery and places to hide a tent is at Studland Bay which you can get to over the ferry at Sandbanks.
The bus from Bournemouth to Swanage, No50, goes over on it too.
Details on here.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090725164851AA4Gb30 . . . . .
Twenty minutes from the middle of Bournemouth and after the five minute ferry ride get off the bus the other side (there's a stop for the Studland beach) and walk along the beach for a mile. The public footpath to Swanage goes along there too, and half a mile of the beach is a nudist beach (first in UK, many years old, and some of the punters look like originals too)
There is an alternative path inland, well marked, to bypass it for those who want to.
In the summer it's busy but further along past the heather and the National Trust centre and car park which is OK for meals and coffees and has a cold shower outside for the swimmers, and then past the scrub wood and then it gets fine.
The woods give loads of firemaking materials but care is needed anywhere you go in UK if you want a fire so my normal advice is...don't bother.
Without a lot of experience even for a simple thing like a fire, you could be paying out money to the courts quite easily.
See mine on here for camping wild and Eleanor knows the score too.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090401125151AASteKR . . . . .
Here's the gaff about fires...for the Peak District but applies all over UK.
The guy on top carries a washing machine tub eh? Hell of a backpack he's got.....
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090918025837AAt7Yz6 . . . . . .
Bournemouth is hot. Not the staid retirement place of old.
It's got hot dance clubs, good food, and a long busy blue flag beach for the non-camping days, with plenty of entertainment.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090514165834AA8uGw8 . . . . .

|Newquay is more used to beach parties and fires than most places in UK, but not huge Guy Fawkes fires. You can get some good times in the coves overnight with the 'hot' visitors who know of Newquay's reputation and want some of it for themselves ( be careful of underage jailbait dressed up as older) and beach sleeping is fairly common but not a great idea in blowy weather which can raise the tides higher than the normal mark and catch people out...I live on an island, seen it loads of times at home and in Newquay, which gets a good surf running ...hence the boarding championships held there....take care.
Out of town at Crantock is a great campsite with good facilities but no fires are allowed.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090522124647AAoBQ6m . . .
Brighton gets good beach parties with small fires overnight but it's all pebbles. I've had a few good nights sleeping under the pier, and not alone.......but it's awkward for a tent unless you have strong steel pegs and a hammer to ram them through the pebbles, and there is nowhere conveniently close enough to put one up anywhere else
Good beaches in UK from personal experience
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090629131554AAanTzY . . . . .
There are hundreds of places reachable by public transport. Have fun, take care, and be brave.
Fortune favours the brave, but not the just plain daft, haha. Have a think about any place you get to, how to look 'non-camping' if necessary, and how to get out again.
First thing, anywhere you go...nightclub, town, valley, county, country...can I get out?I've traveled on five continents. That's the important bit. No getting out...no going home.
Mind those late buses that don't run, haha
Have fun.

We are flying into San Francisco in the middle of May to go camping. We would like either beach access, or redwoods, or both would be great. Something within 3 hours of San Fran where we could rent a cabin (we will consider tent camping but flying with all the gear would be difficult). We will have a 3 year old with us so something kid friendly with rangers/security of some kind is needed. Right now we are mostly looking at Big Basin, but we are searching for other options as well. Any suggestions?

You might want to look into a KOA Cabin. They have several locations throughout the state.

My family and I are looking for a great place to camp in California. We love being surrounded by redwoods, but would like to stay near central California (close to where we live). Yosemite is booked and we have stayed at the KOA in Santa Cruz and liked it. Does anyone have any other suggestions on great places for a family with young children?

Answer
Good evening AJ,

I hope you are having a great day. AJ, it is very hard to pick out a good location if I do not know what type camping you mean? Do you like tent, cabin, or sleeping bags? I like rough areas with fly fishing and hiking. I made three (3) trips last year into the Mighty High Sierras Mountains. I usually hike over Kearsarge Pass, which is an old Indian trail, to Bull Frog at 10,000 feet. I have been camping and hiking the Sierras since 1958.

I remember as kids we would lie in our sleeping bags and count shooting stars all night. Your mind would run amok with the wonders and vastness of space. You could point out and view constellations which until then were part of chapters in a school text book. We would fall asleep viewing the heavens and our own Milky Way.

http://www.naturalbornhikers.com/KearsargePass/KearsargePass.htm

Some of my best camping trips were with my family as a kid in Yosemite. We could not wait to see the fire falls at night (website below). I feel so sorry for people like you and your family, especially the kids. The fire falls stopped in 1968. Today, you must have an appointment for two years in advance to get a camping spot. The crowds are unbelievable, times change.

As for your question, I ready do not know how rough you want. Try Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. They should have some openings. I tried to give websites with phone numbers.

My favorite camping locations are along the Kern River. I can always find a good location because I know the area like the back of my hand. The camping can be mild to rough. I have included websites with phone numbers. On the first website, click on Hospital Flat and Camp 3. Both sites are right next to slow moving riverâ¦.great areas for kids.

I wish you were interested in coming south of Los Angeles. There are some great camping spots for families with kids. I know it may be too far.

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

I'm considering Highlands Hammock and Ocala for tent camping for a group of us for my birthday. Assuming we don't want primitive sites, which site #'s are the best for tent camping (privacy/location) for these parks or others in central or south florida?

Answer
If you REALLY want something nice, you might want to consider Fort DeSoto County Park in southern Pinellas County (Tampa Bay area).

Fort DeSoto's North Beach was named the #1 Beach in the U.S. (Hawaii included) in 2005! It sits on the Gulf, at the mouth of Tampa Bay!

You can go to http://www.fortdesoto.com/servlets/Page/camping for more info and to make reservations.

What are the best RV campgrounds in Central Florida to bring small children to?

Beachy Kee

My husband and I recently got an RV and have been taking our 2 small boys camping for about the past year. What are the best campgrounds that are the most kid friendly. We have 1 year old and 3 year old boys.

Answer
If I could I would stay at the Disney Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. You can stay there and enjoy all the ammenities of a Disney resort without even having to pay to go to the parks. There is a pool, horseback riding, tennis, archery, crusing on the Disney lakes, petting zoo, playgrounds and so much more. Be sure to click the link on the sources section, for much more detailed info from www.allears.net.

Here's a little more info:
There are 788 conventional campsites at FW located in 20 loops (100 through 2000). Most sites are fairly secluded from one another by a generous growth of brush and trees between sites. All campsites are back-ins and are a combination of paved driveway, which range in length from 25 to 60 feet, and sandy pad. Each site is approximately 25 feet wide and comes with a picnic table and charcoal grill. All sites have electricity (20/30/50 amps) and city water. There are 695 full hookup sites that also provide sewer. The 90 partial hookup sites, primarily used by tent campers and those with tent trailers, are located on loops 1500 and 2000.

It used to be that you couldn't have a campfire at the sites, because they worried about people letting them get out of control etc. But! this policy changed.

You can bring in your own contained campfire unit. Typically, stores call them firepits or outdoor fireplaces. It's a solid metal bottom on short legs with metal mesh sides and a top. A mesh top is okay at all campsites EXCEPT any of those that are creekside. If you have a creekside spot, you must have a solid metal top for your firepit. This is to better prevent embers from spreading to the greater amount trees and foliage (and wildlife) that are around the creeks. For example, the creek/dog walk along Loop 300 has a large wooded area with deer, eagles, armadillos and more making their home there.

Of course, Fort Wilderness also has the Campfire Program where you can enjoy campfires as well as everything offered at this special program.

Are there any recommendations for winter camping tents that can be heated and are big enough for two cots?

I have been camping in my Astro Van year around, but no longer have it.

Answer
I don't trust any heater inside a tent regardless how safe it is rated. If you want to be warm and still not have to worry look at http://www.zodi.com/web-content/Consumer/zodihotvent.html for a heater you don't have to worry about. It can be used with any tent.

Anyone know of a good way to keep warm in a tent while camping?

NicaChica

We are going camping at the end of october, which can get very cold at night. our site for the first time does not have electric to hook up a small heater. what can i get to stay warm?
Thank you everyone!!!! I might even be hot at night!!!

Answer
Have a good sleeping bag. I don't know about where you are camping but a 20 degree bag (sleeping bags are rated by temperature comfort levels) should help keep you warm. Also - lay on a sleeping pad (either a closed cell pad or a thermarest) - the pad will insulate you from the ground, which can rob you of your heat 9even in a tent). And finally, wear a hat at night, like a stocking cap. A lot of body heat is lost through the head and covering it up will help you stay warm.
