Where is the best place to go camping in the Smoky Mountains?

We're interested in going camping sometime this summer up in the Smoky Mountains and we'd like to be somewhere near Pigeon Forge, TN. Where is the best place to go up there?

We'd prefer it be on some kind of water and would rather it not be in a campground with RV's and stuff.

Links to pictures of the location would also be great...thanks!
Also any links to good websites that have camping locations and reviews would be helpful!

Answer
in GSMNP I like Elkmont and Cosby campgrounds both are popular with tents. Elkmont has some nice stream side sites.

Can you pitch a tent anywhere in the Smokies?

Fabulously

I'm planning a 4 day trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and was curious whether you can camp anywhere or just in the "designated areas"? and if it is only in the designated areas, how heavily is this enforced?
Also, if anyone has any good combination of trails to take, that would be greatly appreciated as well. thanks.

Answer
Stop at the welcome center and get a back country camping permit, they will also give you a map of the trails and designated camping area and answer any other questions about camping along the trails in the park. Also check out their website and you can plan your trip ahead of time. http://www.nps.gov/grsm
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in America. It can be really busy during peak season but once past the trail heads near the roads you will usually have the area to yourself.

I came across an article, several actually, exposing how New York Communities for Change (NYCC), formerly known as ACORN, have been paying their staff to go out and protest, so I am wondering if any there is any evidence that this is untrue.

Whenever I post a link, my question goes invisible. If you want to see an example of what I am seeing, google "ACORN Officials Cover Up Occupy Wall Street Involvement".

Answer
Well there is evidence that ACORN is paying the homeless and the recently released from jail to join the protest. Thats why there are many crimes at OWS protests. There isn't any proof the other way around.

Question about getting tickets for Wimbledon?

Always Rem

I might be going this year, and I really want Centre Court tickets.
I will sign up for the Wimbledon ballot and the LTA ballot but there is little chance that I will come out.

How else can I get Centre Court tickets?

Thanks!

Answer
Hey,

I was wondering too this time last year if I wanted to go to Wimbledon, and I did.
Between Janruary and June I was trying to find information about getting tickets, and I could never find anything.

First of all let me tell you that you should definetly go to Wimbledon it is the best experience of your life if you are a tennis fan and you will really enjoy it. So best of luck to you.

I know you said you might not get tickets through the ballot, but never say never because some people have to get them so give yourself the best oppertunity and sign up for LTA membership and that will automatically put you in the ballot and also go to www.wimbledon.org and send away for entry to the wimbledon ballot on that too so you never know you could come out of that.

I remember typing in on google wimbledon tickets and sites came up that were selling them and they were all like $500 and they probably didn't even work so whatever you do don't get them from those websites or for that matter and toutes at wimbledon because they won't gain you entry to the grounds.

On ticketmaster the day before wimbledon starts they sell like a few tickets but not very much so little chance of gettting tickets here. They go on sale at like 11 so you have to be there ready and maybe get a few computers ready to give you the best chance but trust me don't get your hopes up for this and the seats arn't very good either.

Anyway, the best way to get wimbledon tickets is to camp overnight. I know it may sound dreadfull but seriously it is amazing and the most fun especially if you go with friends. I would reccomend going the first day of wimbledon so that you don't miss any tennis because you are in the queue all day.

So now, in London city if you are using transport get the London Undeground district (green) line to Southfields station, not wimbledon station. Once you come out of Southfields follow the signs for wimbledon queue and it will direct you to the begining of the queue in Wimbledon park which is a 5 minute walk if even.

Now you have got there! So if you are going on the first day which is Monday the 20th June 2011 make sure you get there on Sunday 19th BEFORE 12:00 in the afternoon. When you get there you will set up your tent and one of the stuards will give you a queue card. The first 500 people will get Centre Court tickets, people between 500-999 will get No.1 Court tickets and people between 1000-1500 will get No.2 Court tickets. I was there at exatly 12:00 and I was number 420 which is a bit risky although I still got Centre Court tickets, try and be there before 12.

The stuards around the queue are really helpfull and will tell you all you need to know. There are really clean toilet facilities, and they are perfect, trust me I am a clean freak! lol. Wimbledon Park is beautiful and make sure you go for a walk around the lake and you will fall in love with the place, just like I did.

Bring stuff to do like Ipod, PSP, DS or magazines, newspapers or books to read because it can kind of get boring if you don't keep yourself entertained. Bring friends too but only if they are interested in tennis because otherwise they will hold you up. Hopefully it will be good weather like it was for me when I was queueing because then you can sunbathe!

Once you get your queue card, you can walk around but MAKE SURE you keep it with you because if it is stolen or lost you have no proof about where you are in the queue. I went for a walk around Southfields village with my Dad and had a very pleasent time and got something to eat in a Pizza restaurent.

We then walked down tworads the Wimbledon grounds and although you can't actually get in, you can still have a look around the outside and I actually saw some players, MARIA KIRILENKO, TOMAS BERDYCH, LUCIE SAFAROVA, IGOR ANDREEV and got photos and autographs from them. Make sure you get a huge tennis ball so you can get autographs.

This should really fill your day. Now it is probably around 6 or 7 so go back to your tent and have a drink and talk to some of the people beside you. They are usually really friendly and if you know a lot about tennis you should have a hell of a lot to talk about!

The stuards wake you up at around six but to be honost, I would wake up around five because there is always a big queue for the bathrooms for brushing teath. Also I cannot stress more on this, GET INTO THE BAG QUEUE EARLY!!!!!!!!!!! If you have luggage you can leave them at the top of the queue for £1 per bag and seriously I nearly missed the Centre Court tickets being given out because I was queueing there for almost 2 hours. But if you get there early and be one of the first you should be fine.

The reason why the stuards wake you up so early is because there are some people coming in to joint the queue in the morning for just Ground passes and there are 6,000 of them. You have to pack up your tent and belongings to make room for them.

The queue runs from the park then through to the golf course and over the bridge into the grounds.
Bring stuff to do in the queue because you could get bored. At around 10 o' clock the stuards will give out rist-bands to the first 500 people who want Centre Court tickets and then so on to the next 500 people for No.1 Court and then the next 500 for No.2 Court. My Dad stayed in the queue while I was waiting two hours to drop off the bags and I had to run to join him of where my queue card is and I just got there while they were giving out the wrist bands so if I had got there two minutes later I would have missed the Centre Court wristbands so again it is so important that you get to the bag drop off early.

You will now most likely get into the grounds at around 11. The cost of a Centre Court ticket which includes all the outside courts aswel costs £41. Play on Centre Court does not begin until 1 o' clock whereas play on the outside courts begins at 12 o' clock so go to a match there for an hour before you take your seat at Centre Court. Generally they give the best seats to the people who camped overnight, which I think is very fair.

My husband and I love to travel. We like to tent camp in places that have lots of trails. My favorite place we've ever tent camped is Rocky Mountain National Park. Any other suggestions?

Answer
Rocky Mtn Natl Park is wonderful! We'll be going there in about six weeks. I love it.

One of our favorite places to go is in the Uintah range in Utah. Most of the best places are reached by hiking but if you take State Rd 150 (Mirror Lake Hwy) that runs between Kamas, UT and Evanston, WY you'll find several campgrounds that are in beautiful country. There are several mtn lakes along the road that offer great fishing but are way to cold for swimming.
http://www.outdoorsinutah.com/mirrorlakehighway-camping.htm

Moon Lake on the south side of the range, above Mountain Home, UT is another great place to camp. It's a bigger, nicer lake but further from civilization.

Is it legal to dry camp anywhere on national forest land, or do you have to stay in a designated campground?

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

I want to sleep in my 6 person tent with 3 others at Como Park in St. Paul, I wanted to know if it was legal to sleep there if they don't have available camping grounds for anyone, basically, I want to sleep in a sheltered little area, close to a trail, and away from people... any answers you have will be helpful .

It depends entirely on the park in question. The best course of action is to contact your Parks and Recreations Department of your city for the policy concerning this.

Going tent camping What should we do at night and camping checklist?

best tent camping food on The Top Five Camping Stores in the United States
best tent camping food image

Artsygirly

Im going tent camping and there is plently to do during the day but what should we do at night besides sitting around the fire? Also if you could make me a camping checklist i would apreciate it! Thanks!

Answer
Will you be "family" camping or primitive camping with friends? My group usually brings a few different beverages and a variety of food. At night we sit around the bomb fire and share stories, laugh, and play drinking games. During the day we go canoeing on the river for about 4-5 hrs and that typically exhaustes us to just relax at night. If your going primitive camping its important to bring the essintals b/c you DEF need them. Depending on the type of camping you'll be doing will depend on what you'll need. Here just a few items I can think of:

Tent
Tarp
Stakes (if not included w/ tent)
Flashlight/ Lantern- wick- kerosine
Stakes Hammer
Camping knife
Water- LOTS
Food
Portable Grill or Stove
Utinesils/Plates
Trash bags/ Toilet Paper (if no bathrooms are provided)
Water Sealant for tent
Cooler
Radio
Matches/Lighter
Wood (usually can be bought from the camp site)

How much would it cost to spend 2 months camping?

Plus

We're wanting to take June and July off and just go camping through the state of New Mexico and the grand canyon.

We'll have $1,500 a month and $400 a month for food.
Our monthly going out would be $110 for phones, $157 for our truck, $63 for insurance, plus diapers, wipes and dog food, so about $100.

We plan on staying about 5-7 days in each location, and one of those weeks we'll be staying for free at someone's house.

We're considering buying a cab over camper, it'll be slightly easier than tent camping, but I think it'll be more expensive.

We'll be bringing bikes, so when we stop we won't be driving a ton.

Our main ideas are the grand canyon, Carlsbad caverns, white sands, Roswell, etc.

Does this sound possible with our income?

Answer
$1900 per month should do you just fine. People have made that tour on a whole lot less. Assuming your vehicle is in good shape. It's getting hot out there though. Carry lots of water.
I've been to Carlsbad Caverns, it's very wonderful.
Grand Canyon is going to cost you some. I have heard that they don't even allow cars at the South rim any more, gotta park outside and get bused in. Check on that and be prepared.
White Sands and Roswell won't cost much and I assume Roswell has camping.

You should be able to do all that with the resources you have. I wouldn't do the RV thing, it costs a lot to park them and they require lots of maintenance (and fuel). Use tents.

Hope it goes well!! Sounds like a great trip.

Probably doing 30-40 miles a day at a leisurely pace. Rental company will be providing the bikes, paniers and helmets. What should I plan on bringing clothing and other equipment-wise--want to travel light. Thanks!

Answer
All trips start with a credit card/cash -- it'll get you out of almost any difficulty.

Basic bike stuff: water bottles, extra tube, pump, patch kit, etc. Tires, spokes and tools are usually provided by the operator

More or less you want to cover the "10 essentials": Map, Flashlight / Headlamp, First-Aid Kit, Pocket Knife, Insect Repellents, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Medications, Toiletries.

Layered clothes to handle a variety of weather conditions. Post ride clothes can usually part of your layering. Extra bike shorts (wash one, wear one). Small amount of soap (to wash aforementioned bike clothes). Lightweight rain jacket and some plastic bags to handle inclement weather. One of those free hotel shower caps makes a pretty good helmet cover.

Special food or drink that you like on a ride (mostly I pick it up at stores along the way)

Depends on whether you are camping or hoteling. Camping requires more gear, tent, sleeping bag, etc. Hoteling covers the basics, towels, shampoo, etc so you can go lighter.

Have a great trip!

Where can I find a good online camping gear store?

Hi everyone.

I am planning to have a bike tour from Chicago to NY this summer. So I need to find few camping light-weight camping gears. Basically I need.

1 pot
1 gasoline stove
1 tent (3 season for 1 person)
1 sleeping bag
all of those around $ 120~160

I figured I can shop them in one spot and save some shipping cost.
I do not care whether they are used or new but I want to keep them cheap yet reliable. Is there any store that offers a reliable bargain?

Answer
Go to www.sportsmanguide.com they have a lot of stuff at really low prices. I got a really good deal on a treadmill saved almost $50 after comparing prices to other stores. Don't forget where ever you buy from, always do a google search for coupon codes for discounts. Xbargins always has the most updated codes.

This is a tent that hooks to the side of the camper, but will remain standing if you want to leave for the day exploring.

Answer
Try thesamba.com. It's loaded with all things vintage VW. If you can't find an original there, GoWesty! makes excellent parts of all sorts for your camper. (I have a 1970 and owe many great thanks to GoWesty!)
Also try craigslist and ebay, but be willing to have patience.
You can also look into making your own tent -- there are patterns and instructions on the internet.
Also give the Yahoo group WetWesties a try -- it's free to join and it doesn't matter where you live, though they are based mainly in Oregon. Regardless of location, you'll never find a better resource for all your VW camper questions -- there are a ton of good, helpful people there!
Happy camping!!

We live in NW CO and are looking for lakes to spin and bait cast for trout (or any fish for that matter) that are relatively close. We love to tent camp. Ideally we would be at as a secluded, treed site as possible near the water without much of a hike in as we are older. Thank you in advance and have a great day!

Answer
Northwest Colorado is pretty vague. If you live near Craig, then Flat Top Wilderness Area is close. If you live near Kremmling, then you should go to the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. If you are near Vail, then head for Holy Cross Wilderness Area. If you are near Carbondale, then look at Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area. White River National Forest has 2.3 million acres in which to find lakes and rivers.

how to go on a graduation road trip for cheap?

batman264

i'm planning a road trip for my senior trip. it will be with 4 -6 total in the group. i want to last about 2-3 weeks. not sure how to pull it off for cheap. i live in Louisiana and am planning on driving through Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi then returning home. not sure exactly what to see and do and we're planning on staying in tent at national camp sites if possible. any suggestions and help would be much appreciated

Answer
Planning on a 2-3 week road trip and covering 11 states seems to be a bit overwhelming. I'd try to narrow the trip down and either head toward Texas, New Mexico and Colorado or head east toward Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. For me, I'd even narrow it down and just make the trip to Colorado. There is a lot to see in that state. Even with living in campgrounds, you'll be too tired driving or even see the sites and you gas bill would be out of sight, Pick just a few states and relax. Narrow down the list of states, check with your friends and find out what they would like to see. Look on he Internet and also in state guides for information of historic sites, parks, etc. Your trip will probably be in Summer, so traveling in the Texas area might be pretty hot.

To save money on your trip, a camp site is a good idea. Also, so not forget to carry perishable foods in an ice chest and cook most of your own meals. Eating out can obviously be expensive. Some national park camp sites might be crowded especially during the summer months. When you decide what states you will visit, make reservations or bring a campsite directory for the state you will be visiting. You can often fine books like this in any large bookstore. It goes without saying that give your car a good checkup-maintenance, carry spare water and oil and check the inflation on your tires. Also bring a camera or two. Have fun.

I can find lots of info on tent camping on the internet, but nothing that explains electrical hookup. I'm a single mom. I hope I can find a veteran camper who can help me with my camping questions.

Answer
Typically, "Water and Electrical Hookups" are referring to convenient places an RV or trailer can plug in to for power and running water. Chances are, you should be able to plug an extension cord with a power strip for running some electrical items.

I say plan your trip as if the electrical won't be available, but bring a few things that will be helpful in case it is.

A few helpful camping tips:
If there's a firepit, bring a couple Duraflame logs. They last a couple hours, don't take any special gymnastics to ignite, and you can always throw regular wood on after the duraflame is burning. Remember to smother your campfire before you go to bed (Shovel dirt on it, etc).

Bring a stiff rake. Rake out the spot where you're putting your tent(s). This way, you don't end up rolling over onto a rock or acorn.

Please, please, PLEASE, clean up when you're gone. Have your kids walk all over your campsite and pick up every little bit of trash possible. (Also, bring trashbags! Not all campsites have convenient trash receptacles).

Check the temperature ranges in advance, and pack accordingly. It's a very long night when it's freezing cold and you didn't bring the winter sleeping bags. Remember that tents catch fire VERY easily, so don't put the tent next to the campfire, and don't bring electrical or gas heaters into the tent.

Bring fresh drinking water. (Those 2.5 gallon jugs with the convenient spigot are good...)

Bring a medical kit w/ all the usual refinements. Kids will always find a way to get boo-boo's.

I can almost guarantee that you will certainly overpack for your first trip. You'll find that over time you'll be able to whittle it down to the stuff you *really* need, as opposed to the stuff you think you'll need.

If you're with someone who is not a morning person, they will be much worse in the morning. Trust me.

Good luck!

What are the rules for tent camping in the French Alps?

larray

Traveling the GR 5 from Les Houches to Briancon. Can I tent camp the entire way. I believe I have seen that you can camp anywhere above tree line.

Answer
Alpine camping is best. Pack out waste including feces and urine.
Avoid avalanche chutes, rockfall, but bivy slung between two knobs
amid vertical cliff is fine if you sleep wearing fall-arrest harness fixed
to something that probably can't be pulled away by accident. This
may work for reader on GR5 bridges at mid-span; just hang below
likely exit location of traffic hurtling past to destruction below.

I heard that there's a lot of wild fruit in Hawaii but could I really live off of that?

Answer
Hey welcome to Hawaii, ok? You got kina good idea, that already been tried, but not too successful, ok? Wild fruit hea not reality, ok? If you wanna live, eat cheap, you need to have little place to prep food, ok? Now, already said, you can't live offa wild fruit, ok? But there are opportunity for young strong guy to work onna farm, like WWOOF, gotta make sure they have good place for you to live, and what they expect from you for work, but if you finda rite place, you can do ok, yeah? Watch out for local people who only wanna let you stay inna tent and clear off lot with hand labor, that not a real farm/truck garden, they just look for slave, ok? Remember, if you move hea, gotta eat like local, to eat cheap, yeah? You gonna need place to cook rice, cause that cheap way to eat, ok? Hawaiian family cook rice eva day, eat for all meals, just fix different way, ok? Bread ok, peanut butter ok, but brown rice keep longer, and mobetta for you, ok? Peanut butter cost big cause not made hea, ok? If you find little farm that produce Mac nuts, try them instead, you can trade work for nuts maybe, yeah? Now, you gonna need kapaakid famous fry rice recipe, just ask question, I give it to you, ok? But, and this "big but", ok? If you think you gonna come Hawaii, live onna beach inna tent, eat wild fruit, and surf all day long...good luck cause you not gonna be able to do that, ok? Cops gonna haul you in for camp without permit, or vagrancy, ok? One thing Hawaii not need, more haole surf bum, we got more than our share now, ok? And, we got our unending supply Hawaiian and local already hea, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!

I,m thinking about moving to Hawaii and live in a Van for 1yr?

YOCRAPSMAN

Maybe 3 months on each island or 6 months on 2 islands. So my guestion is can i live/sleep in a VAN in Hawaii? Which islands is best for sleeping in a Van.PS Also want to do alot of surfing.

Answer
That isn't a practical idea. Even if it isn't against local laws, sleeping in a van on several islands won't work well because there's no inexpensive way to transport a van from island to island. Buying and selling a different van on each island would be expensive, even if you buy old clunkers. It would make more sense to stay in a hostel. I've seen them priced as low as $22.50 a night, and one offers tent camping sites for $10 a night.

Hi, I would like to plan a trip to Ireland, but am not sure where to start. I need to save, and be frugal.?

I really want to travel to Ireland, but am not exactly flush with funds. Any ideas on some cost effective, but safe ways to travel and see Ireland? Thanks so much!
I would like to be there for about a week, and hostel accommodations would be great if they are safe (are they? i have no clue). I would love to see the countryside more than the cities. I like in Rochester NY, USA. Thanks so much!

Answer
Can you give us some more info on this please?

How long are you coming for?
Would you make do with hostel accommodation?
Are you wanting to see the countryside or the cities?
Where are you coming from?
=========================================
edit:

OK, first thing to bear in mind is that Ireland is split in two. In the North (Northern Ireland) they use Sterling (British money), in the south (Republic of Ireland) they use the Euro, so if you are going to visit both, try to make sure you have both currencies.

For Hostels, in Belfast there's Arnies ( http://www.arniesbackpackers.co.uk/ ) and in the south theres An Ãige (The Irish Youth Hostel Assoc) ( http://www.anoige.ie/ - they have hostels all over)

If you can afford a little more and are stopping in Belfast, then the place we use to put up friends/family if there is not enough room in the house is Kate's B&B ( http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/product.aspx?ProductID=4534 )

To make the trip cheaper, there are a number of bus tickets you can get that give you pretty much unlimited travel ( https://www.buseireann.ie/asp/ExplorerList.asp ) and you can view the timetables on line for Northern Ireland ( http://www.translink.co.uk/ ) and for the south by visiting ( https://www.buseireann.ie/site/home/ )

Something else you need to bear in mind is that Ireland is colder than a lot of the US. The reason it is so green is that it never stops raining :-)

There are also quite a few camp sites, but unless you have a very waterproof tent, you are taking a risk.

If you want to look up non-Ãige hostels or Bed & Breakfasts on your own, a good place to start is http://www.goldenpages.ie for the south or http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/index.publisha for Northern Ireand.

Now, all you need is to decide where you want to go, find local hostels, and plan the buses.

Need any more help, email me.

places in jersey to go camping and fishing?

jay

so i live in central jersey and i'm thinking about going camping. is there anywhere i can go with a couple of other people that's just away from a lot of other campers and people or if not some kind of campground and how much it would be to stay on the campground? preferably somewhere where we can catch some fish.

Answer
Jersey, as in the Channel Islands of the UK, or New Jersey, in the United States? If the former, I don't know. But as for the latter, camping is available 16 state parks and forests, and over 100 commercial campgrounds throughout the state of NJ.

For a place that's away from other campers and offers good fishing, you might consider the Wilderness Camping at Round Valley Reservoir. Although you might be able to see other campers from your spot, it is a 3+ mile hike from the parking area to the closest campsite, and 6 miles to the furthest. So not a lot of people go here. The reservoir is 2,000 acres and 180 feet deep, hosting lake trout, browns and rainbows, as well as bass, pickerel and other species. I camped here a few times many years ago, and it's a nice campground and the reservoir is amazing. Recommended.

In the NJ Pineleands, Wharton State Forest has several Remote and Primitive Campsites. Remote campsites are available via sand roads only (4WD recommended), and vehicles are prohibited in Primitive Campsites. No facilities are available. There are many streams, rivers and lakes in the area to choose from for fishing. Prices range from $2 per person to $20 per night. I go to the Pinelands frequently, and usually stay at one of the remote sites where I will encounter one or two other campers during most weeks. Also Recommended.

Also, the structures available for rent at many state parks and forests are often isolated from other camping areas. Lean-To's, Yurts and Cabins are available from $35 to over $100 per night, with a 7-day minimum during the summer season. Check the maps on the NJDEP website. I've stayed in cabins at state parks a few times at Stokes and Wharton, and they are a nice family alternative to staying in a tent or RV. Stokes also has a lake and great fishing.

As for commercial campgrounds, many are located on rivers, streams and lakes, where fishing is good. But none that I'm aware of offer sites that are isolated from other campers. Costs at commercial sites range from $25 - $80 per night, depending on amenities and site selection. The principal advantages being you can bring your dog and your beer.

What are some great places to go on a winter/Christmas vacation?

Ashley Cla

My boyfriend and I are both in the military. So we see each other about once a year. And we are both going to take leave and spend a few days together and I want it to be really special. I don't like the beach, so that's out. And I don't want mounds of snow either. So is there like a really beautiful, scenic, woodsy place down south that we could go camping? But I don't want to go tent camping. I want more like a private cabin. I don't want a resort. Hopefully that's not too complicated.. help!

Answer
Ahhh...you'd love Asheville, North Carolina, which doesn't get very severe winters and is absolutely lovely at any time of year. We stayed at Bentcreek Lodge, where Doug and Jodee took great care of us. They also manage a private lodge that is "next door," i.e. up the road and around the bend, or along a path through the woods. Their breakfasts are fantastic, and Bentcreek is really convenient to getting downtown, or up onto the Blueridge Parkway where the views are magnificent. You are also close to Biltmore, the Vanderbilt mansion. We loved Bentcreek and the hospitality!

How to stay warm in camping tent in winter?

Anita

I have never gone winter camping and I will do that next week. I want to know how to stay warm in camping tent in such cold day. Anyone knows that?

Answer
1. Learn about heat loss and you will come to better understand how to stay warm in the backcountry. Heat is primarily lost through conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation. For example heat could be lost from sitting on a cold rock, from wind chill, from not wearing a hat and heat escaping, or respiration. Besides warming up near the camp stove people can only generate heat by keeping up their metabolism, exercising and shivering if need be.

2. Layering properly is the first thing winter backpackers can do to regulate heat. This means non-cotton, moisture wicking base layers and mid-layers, insulated layers such as a down vest and jacket and down pants and weather proof outer layers. A hat and balaclava or neck gaiter is also necessary as are liner socks and socks made with wool. Down camp booties aren't necessary but make your world much more comfortable. Mountaineering or plastic boots with insulated liners are what to hike in through snow and ice and liner gloves and insulated over-mitts are what will keep your fingers moving.

3. Stay dry and pace yourself. The point of all these layers is not to wear them all at once but to control the four primary losses of heat while hiking. Staying dry is crucial. Don't let yourself get too sweaty because as soon as you stop for a break your sweat begins to freeze. Wearing things that dry easily and wick moisture such as polypropylene, capilene, synthetic or wool are the way to go whether you are hiking, snowshoeing or backcountry skiing. Keep yourself properly hydrated too, as loss of heat happens from loss of moist exhalation.

4. Make your camp in such a way that you take advantage of the elements. After anchoring your tents in the snow, dig out a 3 by 2-foot area in front of your tent door at least 12 inches into the snow. This acts as an entryway where you can sit in your tent while hanging your feet out to change out of your boots and camp booties without bringing wet snow inside the tent. One or two-wall nylon tents work fine though one-wall tents are a bit lighter. Using at least one sleeping pad is necessary for winter camping as you need to insulate yourself from the cold ground and snow. More than one sleeping pad is recommended. Either use a shorter foam pad beneath your inflatable one or sleep on your extra layers at night. This also dries them out.

5. Sleep warm. Make sure to eat a bit more than you think you can handle and have plenty of hot drinks before getting into your sleeping bag on a night of winter backpacking. Your metabolism not only has to deal with the workout you've had during the day but also has to keep you warm through the cold night. Before getting into your bag fill up a water bottle with boiling water from the stove, slip a sock or shirt over it so it doesn't burn your skin and sleep with this in your bag, sleep with two of them if necessary.

6.Make sure that you keep your sleeping bag as dry as possible, especially if it is made of down as this material loses its warmth when wet. If you are generally a cold person, get a sleeping bag that is rated at least 10 to 20 degrees colder than you think you might need. Also sleep with boot liners so they aren't frozen when you try to wiggle your toes in there the following morning. Use a small 2 by 2-foot square cut from a role of sleeping pad foam and kneel on it while cooking or taking a break, to insulate from the snow at all times.
