I really want to travel to Ireland, but am not exactly flush with funds. Any ideas on some cost effective, but safe ways to travel and see Ireland? Thanks so much!
I would like to be there for about a week, and hostel accommodations would be great if they are safe (are they? i have no clue). I would love to see the countryside more than the cities. I like in Rochester NY, USA. Thanks so much!

Answer
Can you give us some more info on this please?

How long are you coming for?
Would you make do with hostel accommodation?
Are you wanting to see the countryside or the cities?
Where are you coming from?
=========================================
edit:

OK, first thing to bear in mind is that Ireland is split in two. In the North (Northern Ireland) they use Sterling (British money), in the south (Republic of Ireland) they use the Euro, so if you are going to visit both, try to make sure you have both currencies.

For Hostels, in Belfast there's Arnies ( http://www.arniesbackpackers.co.uk/ ) and in the south theres An Ãige (The Irish Youth Hostel Assoc) ( http://www.anoige.ie/ - they have hostels all over)

If you can afford a little more and are stopping in Belfast, then the place we use to put up friends/family if there is not enough room in the house is Kate's B&B ( http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/product.aspx?ProductID=4534 )

To make the trip cheaper, there are a number of bus tickets you can get that give you pretty much unlimited travel ( https://www.buseireann.ie/asp/ExplorerList.asp ) and you can view the timetables on line for Northern Ireland ( http://www.translink.co.uk/ ) and for the south by visiting ( https://www.buseireann.ie/site/home/ )

Something else you need to bear in mind is that Ireland is colder than a lot of the US. The reason it is so green is that it never stops raining :-)

There are also quite a few camp sites, but unless you have a very waterproof tent, you are taking a risk.

If you want to look up non-Ãige hostels or Bed & Breakfasts on your own, a good place to start is http://www.goldenpages.ie for the south or http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/index.publisha for Northern Ireand.

Now, all you need is to decide where you want to go, find local hostels, and plan the buses.

Need any more help, email me.

My wife and I love to camp on the beach. There are numerous places in Texas and Louisiana where you can set up a tent either very close to the sand or on it. Any suggestions?

Answer
You can get a back country permit to camp directly on the beach at Canaveral National Seashore In New Smyrna Beach. This is a "hike in" only location, so may have the entire twelve miles of beach to yourselves.
Most of the locations already mentioned by other answerers are in developed parks and while quite nice, are still developed and you will have plenty of neighbors.

You can also go to Everglades National Park and primitive camp on Cape Sable. You cannot reach this place by car or foot, only by boat.

What is the wheather like in colorado springs during July?

tlabrueyer

I would like for my family to go camping in colorado springs this year as our family vacation but I dont know if its too hot for a tent or would we be better off getiing a cabin. We are from Louisiana so camping during July in tents are only for the extremest becasue the humidity and heat are unbareable during the summer.

Answer
In Springs in July, yes it would be to hot in a tent.(Try Cascade, Woodland Park or Lake George all close to Springs)

Springs however is right up against the mountains, and temps less than 10 miles from town may be a lot cooler. (don't forget that temperatures can dip down pretty low at night even in July, one year on the 4th of July I was camping in Leadville and it got down to 23F after leaving Pueblo at 103F)

►How high in feet is Denver since they call it the mile high city?

Answer
"Introduction to Denver

It's no accident that Denver is called "the Mile High City": When you climb up to the State Capitol, you're precisely 5,280 feet above sea level when you reach the 18th step. Denver's location at this altitude was purely coincidental; Denver is one of the few cities that was not built on an ocean, lake, navigable river, or even on an existing road or railroad.

In the summer of 1858, eager prospectors discovered a few flecks of gold where Cherry Creek empties into the shallow South Platte River, and a tent camp quickly sprang up on the site. (The first permanent structure was a saloon.) When militia Gen. William H. Larimer arrived in 1859, he claim-jumped the land on the east side of the Platte, laid out a city, and, hoping to gain political favors, named it after James Denver, governor of the Kansas Territory, which included this area. Larimer was not aware that Denver had recently resigned.

Larimer's was one of several settlements on the South Platte. Three others also sought recognition, but Larimer, a shrewd man, had a solution. For the price of a barrel of whisky, he bought out the other would-be town fathers, and the name "Denver" caught on.

Although the gold found in Denver was but a teaser for much larger strikes in the nearby mountains, the community grew as a shipping and trade center, in part because it had a milder climate than the mining towns it served. A devastating fire in 1863, a deadly flash flood in 1864, and American Indian hostilities in the late 1860s created many hardships. But the establishment of rail links to the east and the influx of silver from the rich mines to the west kept Denver going. Silver from Leadville and gold from Cripple Creek made Denver a showcase city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The U.S. Mint, built in 1906, established Denver as a banking and financial center.

In the years following World War II, Denver mushroomed to become the largest city between the Great Plains and the Pacific Coast, with about 500,000 residents within the city limits and more than 2.5 million in the metropolitan area. Today, it's a sprawling and growing city, extending from the Rocky Mountain foothills on the west far into the plains to the south and east. Denver is noted for its dozens of tree-lined boulevards, 200 city parks that cover more than 20,000 acres, and architecture ranging from Victorian to sleek contemporary."

does anyone know where to find free camp equipment for scouts in denver co?

susan s

we are looking for free or low cost tents, cooking supplies, tarps, and anything usefull for Girl Scout Camping. I would be willing to pick up in Denver/Metro Colorado area, if close enough

Answer
Many councils and service units have camping equipment to loan out, from tents to cooking sets to first aid kits.

You can make some of your gear, instructions are at:
http://www.backpacking.net/makegear.html

There are all kinds of PVC structures, including a flag stand, table, wash station, etc. at:
http://www.gspiglet.org/

Also, if you see something at a garage sale or thrift store, tell them you want it for Girl Scouts. I've found many times the people will heavily discount things for Scouts.

Freecycle is a wonderful resource for stuff like this, too, I agree you should check it out.

My children and I have been tent camping regularly in National Forest areas and I would like to continue, but the recent bear attack on the poor boy in Utah has me thinking twice. I do not own a gun and so far have just followed the no food in camp rule as a precaution. What can I do to protect myself and my children other than not going?

what GOOD foods can I make before camping?

happymom84

I can't do the hot dogs and hamburgers anymore. We are going on a 4 day tent camping trip next week. I am looking for food to prepare before we go. Like pasta salads to just eat . I also want to make the food ahead of time that I can cook while there. ideas? Just no hot dogs or hamburgers please. Thank you.

Answer
for camping trips I used to collect stuff to take that would be easy to prepare.

I made bisquick type blend for biscuits, pancakes, etc that just need water added.
Steaks and bacon or sausage for meats
fresh fruits and veggies travel best.
I even took one Cheesecake birthday cake one year!!

My kids were in elementary school the last long campout we had. So there were lots of hotdogs which I don't particularly like. No ground beef stuff as it is more mess than I wanted to do.

Prepare your pasta and put in ziplock bags in the chill box along with dressings for your salad. Don't put the dressing on the pasta until ready to eat. The pasta has a nasty habit of absorbing it.
Chop fruits and veggies and ziplock them
Soup can be prepared and ziplocked so it only has to be heated.
hardboil a dozen or so eggs and peel, zip lock them

fresh eggs can be cracked into ziplock bags also, then just pour each out separately into skillet for breakfast.

How do you go camping (I've never been)?

I live in Philadelphia and wanna go camping next weekend with my bf when he comes to town (It'd be really hot to f*ck outdoors and sleep naked under the stars). I don't own a tent or a lantern or anything that has to do with camping...should I just forget about it? I really don't have much money to blow...and I don't know where we'd go...

If you say camping is a no-go, do you have any other ideas for things to do? We've already been 4x4-ing, shooting and crabbing....so I'm at a loss as to what to plan....
@Peter: That the bird is the word?

Answer
My college always had tents we could rent, along with assorted supplies like camp stoves, lanterns and coffee pots. Rent all and we were out like $11 a day. You could even rent a canoe if you wanted. (Don't, canoes are a pain.)

Rent some gear, let Wal-Mart or if you don't mind dumping some money, REI set you up with some sleeping bags. Take some basic tools, take some canned goods, you can even take stuff from your own kitchen if it can handle natural gas heat it'll get from the camp stove.

You can pick up ice chests for next to nothing at your local convenience store.

One of my dumb, favorite camp meal specials is to simply brown some ground beef, and add a can of Ranch Style Beans.

Don't forget a mutlitool, first aid kit, toilet paper and a shovel. The latter you can pick up at an army-navy surplus store, ask for an entrenching tool, you know where to get the former. They go hand in hand.

Just for another idea, there's a couple places near me that rent RV campers small enough to be towed behind a small car. I was always partial to the Chalet RV's that I could tow behind my little Jeep Wrangler. They rent for about as much as a motel room does per night.

http://www.chaletrv.com/

And for the love of all things Holy, I wish Peter would put The Bird in a suppository configuration. Presumably, next to his head.

Backpacking UK (Equipment Check)?

WishIwereE

Ok, so my friend and I, both 17, girls, and American, are going to backpack the UK very cheaply this summer. This is our plan:

Fly into london from Philadelphia, stay in the piccidilly backpackers hostel in London for two weeks, then hitchhike/walk to Edinbourough, Scotland, then down through Wales and eventually back to London. The exact routes haven't been determined yet, but we will have maps and an international cell phone with gps capabilities.

This is what we think we are going to bring: (please tell me if you have anymore suggestions on what to bring, or if we don't need an object, or any advice you have)

In nice hiking backpack with shoulder support:

Light two person tent (if you know of any, please tell me)
Small LED flashlight
1000 matches
foldable pocket knife
Mace/pepper spray
Four water bottles
Ramen noodles and fruit snacks
small silver pot thing for ramen noodles
International Cellphone
Solar charger for cellphone
battery powered electric razor
extra batteries
regular razor
foldable toothbrush
facewash
roll of paper towels
wetones wipes
hand sanatizer
small bottle of shampoo
bar of soap
two of those tiny thin blankets that are like a sheet of metal, keep your body heat in

Nice shoulder support hiking back pack number two
Four tee-shirts (two for each)
Two pairs of cut off jeans shorts (one for each, etc)
Two pairs of nice skinny jeans
two nice blouse shirts (for bars in london)
two warm sweatshirts
six pairs of socks, one pair for each of us being long
six pairs of underwear
two thermal shirts
two tank tops
two gym shorts
Some extra cash, about 100 dollars, and like 300 pounds, and 100 euros (incase we end up taking the chunnel to paris or a day trip to ireland)

Side messanger bag (me)
camera
the cellphone (we will only have one) (has gps and money converter)
a notebook
pens
another space blanket

Purse (my friend)
basically all of her medications, and a two month supply of inhalers
mace
maps, pamplets, other random stuff

So what do you think of our supply list?

Any thing else we need/don't need?

Answer
Short rule for safety, DO NOT HITCH HIKE
The long rule, hitch hiking is not safe. You might get away with it for a short while, but going long distance, as London-Scotland-London is, you do run risk a lot of times. Specially for two girls of just17 it is NOT a good plan.

From your list delete, either as not allowed to transport by plane or as not allowed in the UK:
matches, mace, peper spray, knife if longer than 2 inch, mace again.

Add whole lot of money. For food alone you need 20 pound per day, and do not count on being able to sleep somewhere without having to spend money.
Forget being able to travel casually to Ireland or the continent, take all your money while on the bank, apart for that first bit of 300 pound. Expect to use about 100 pound per day between you in the Uk, 100 pound per day each in London.
And from 'basically all of her medications, and a two month supply of inhalers' I get the impression that your friends health is not top. In that case, camping wild and roughing it should not be in the plans at all.
Think what would happen if a driver is having 'fun' with her, his friend holding you, and she getting an attack?

If you want to hike, or travel rough in an other way, do it near home, where you know the place, the speak and the people. If you think it is not safe enough why do you think you can get away with it abroad, where you will have money problems on top of it.
If safety is not a concern for you, have you done it near home? I think not, seeing your list and additional questions. It will be more of an adventure even hiking from your house to hers, if you have no experience.

I am new to tent camping and need help. How do you use an electrical hookup in a campground?

I am going to camp in a Yogi Bear campground in a site that says "Water and Electrical Hookup". Does that mean I can use an extension cord with a strip on the end of it that has plugs in it?
I can find lots of info on tent camping on the internet, but nothing that explains electrical hookup. I'm a single mom. I hope I can find a veteran camper who can help me with my camping questions.

Answer
Typically, "Water and Electrical Hookups" are referring to convenient places an RV or trailer can plug in to for power and running water. Chances are, you should be able to plug an extension cord with a power strip for running some electrical items.

I say plan your trip as if the electrical won't be available, but bring a few things that will be helpful in case it is.

A few helpful camping tips:
If there's a firepit, bring a couple Duraflame logs. They last a couple hours, don't take any special gymnastics to ignite, and you can always throw regular wood on after the duraflame is burning. Remember to smother your campfire before you go to bed (Shovel dirt on it, etc).

Bring a stiff rake. Rake out the spot where you're putting your tent(s). This way, you don't end up rolling over onto a rock or acorn.

Please, please, PLEASE, clean up when you're gone. Have your kids walk all over your campsite and pick up every little bit of trash possible. (Also, bring trashbags! Not all campsites have convenient trash receptacles).

Check the temperature ranges in advance, and pack accordingly. It's a very long night when it's freezing cold and you didn't bring the winter sleeping bags. Remember that tents catch fire VERY easily, so don't put the tent next to the campfire, and don't bring electrical or gas heaters into the tent.

Bring fresh drinking water. (Those 2.5 gallon jugs with the convenient spigot are good...)

Bring a medical kit w/ all the usual refinements. Kids will always find a way to get boo-boo's.

I can almost guarantee that you will certainly overpack for your first trip. You'll find that over time you'll be able to whittle it down to the stuff you *really* need, as opposed to the stuff you think you'll need.

If you're with someone who is not a morning person, they will be much worse in the morning. Trust me.

Good luck!

Alpine camping is best. Pack out waste including feces and urine.
Avoid avalanche chutes, rockfall, but bivy slung between two knobs

I know they will let you (or atleast used to let you) have an RV there overnight, but what about tents?

Answer
About tent camping at Walmart, I don't know, but some WalMarts do allow RVer's to stay overnight, but I would call or go inside the store and get clearance from the manager and/or store security before attempting to park in their parking lot all night. Even then, you may still be asked to leave. A friend of ours had permission from the store, but the town's policies did not allow for 'camping' in any public place over night and our friend was rudely awakened by the police knocking on his door at 1 AM who told him he had to leave. So, he had to get dressed and hit the road again until he found a truck stop where he tried to get a few more hours sleep before he had to start driving the next day.

Answer
Tarps and hammocks are the best. They make hammocks with mosquito netting built in if bugs are a problem.

Tarps eliminate walls and you get more ventilation. No privacy really. You can pitch it low over a rope (tied between two trees and knotted to maximize opposing forces, you want it really tight) into an A frame that doesn't quite hit the ground, or into a modified A frame where one side is longer than the other, or a flat plane on an incline with the tarp opening to the private side. You still get more circulation under a tarp because the ends are open, you can cover them in rain with what is called a "beak", by using a poncho or a piece of plastic.

When you use tarps, you also want a ground cover, this could be a piece of 6 mm plastic, a neat sheet, or a piece of nylon from Walmart's clearance fabric dept or even a trash bag that you cut open.

Campmor and REI have great tarps, look for their 8x10 nylon tarp, it is waterproof, and very easy to use, grommets, for about 40 US dollars. You have to get your own line to pitch it with. Nylon masonry cord in bright colors is great. I always color coded mine to find corners vs sides. Tarps can also be plastic, such as you would throw over the bed of your pickup or a stack of firewood, or you can use any piece of waterproof material that you can tie corners into a sheetbend (a knot). You can get all kinds of tarps, all different carry weights, etc. I always had great results with the first one I mentioned, from www.campmor.com

Mosquito hammocks are great. For shelter over you, pitch a tarp as above, just higher, no ground cover needed. What is so cool about these is that you get air circulation all around you. Sucks in the winter so I always hit the ground but in summer there is NOTHING better. Your pack goes underneath you for maximum shelter of you and your gear, if you have it with you. So you don't need a lot of surface area under the shelter, use a smaller tarp, save packweight.

Hennessey Hammocks offer a lot of hammocks, they all have rainflys which attach directly to the hammock, eliminating the need for a tarp. Very popular. I never did like them.

Other hammock brands, these are cottage industries for the most part...so supporting small businessmen, you will pay more to buy from the little guys:

Speer
mosquitohammock.com
Crazy Creek
Clark or Clarke (not sure sp)
Byer of Maine
Travel Hammock

(above are all silk or nylon hammocks) Prices for these vary a lot. With a bugnet you will pay more. Without, they can start at 15 dollars....Hennesseys start at about 100 dollars.

You can also get rope/mesh/net ones that leave nice waffle prints on your butt, and these are available at most discount stores for about 10 dollars.

Have fun, don't forget your bug net if you are near water.

Well, Oakbrook Terrace is in Dupage County, about 18 miles west of the Chicago Loop. It is about a 30-50 minute drive depending on traffic. The Dupage County Forest Preserves are really well maintained and there is camping about 6-8 miles from Oakbrook terrace in Warrenville.

Looking to camp (just a tent) right on the beach in North Carolina - Where should I go?

So I want to take a day trip sometime this summer to some beach here in NC with a couple of friends.

We're simply looking for a nice, non-crowded beach that we can simply put a tent up on - right on the sand - and stay the night and the next day.

I'm not looking for fancy campgrounds, just a place to hitch a tent on the sand!

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Answer
Camping is prohibited on all of North Carolina's beaches, as well as most other states that have coastlines. There are KOA campgrounds as well as other private campgrounds that you can go to, but most of them are not directly on the beach. Camping on the beach is prohibited on the beaches to prevent litter and a mess from campfires.

If you really want to camp on the beach, you could drive to a remote area where you will most likely not be seen, but if a police officer comes around, you will most likely be asked to leave and possibly charged. If you do decide to do that, please respect North Carolina's clean beaches and make sure you don't leave any litter behind. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a great place to go and it's very quiet there. The crystal coast is also a great place to visit. The best thing about North Carolina's Outer Banks is that there isn't a lot of development like Myrtle Beach and other beach destinations.

We live in NW CO and are looking for lakes to spin and bait cast for trout (or any fish for that matter) that are relatively close. We love to tent camp. Ideally we would be at as a secluded, treed site as possible near the water without much of a hike in as we are older. Thank you in advance and have a great day!

Answer
Northwest Colorado is pretty vague. If you live near Craig, then Flat Top Wilderness Area is close. If you live near Kremmling, then you should go to the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area. If you are near Vail, then head for Holy Cross Wilderness Area. If you are near Carbondale, then look at Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness Area. White River National Forest has 2.3 million acres in which to find lakes and rivers.

Looking to campout on the beach and was hoping to find a place i could do it.

What about on beach driving?

Answer
You should go to the Outer Banks... there are several state parks to camp at.. make reservations if you can.. if you can't there's private campgrounds (full of fat, lazy tourists in RVs blaring television and generators all night long) but they suck..

the best places are on Cape Hatteras Island: the oregon inlet (on the north side) and cape point (on the southern end) and Ocracoke Island with it's own campground..

there are tons of sand dunes.. and hiking trails... they are so beautiful and most of them are protected from the wheels of a vehicle tearing them apart...
have fun!

Can I use a portable Air conditioning unit in a pop up tent trailer?

tents for camping with air conditioning image

Bcomer21

Im going camping this summer and its going to be HOT. I have a 6 month old that I will need to keep cool. We have electrical hookup at the site. Is it safe to use a portable air conditioning unit in a pop up tent trailer?

Answer
Yes but there two issues you will need to address. One is you will need to find a place to securely fasten the air conditioner so that it vents to the outside and cannot fall on anyone. The second point is the campsite electrical power. Be sure the air conditioner does not draw more amps than your campsite hookup. That hookup could be 15, 20, 30 or 50 amps. The 15 and 20 amps will have a standard household plug, but the 30 and 50 amp hookups have special plugs. So you also need to be sure the plug on your air conditioner is compatible with your hookup - if not, you can probably buy an adapter. The campground owner should be able to supply you with the electric hookup information.

What is a good air conditioning option for camping?

Scott S

I have planned a camping trip coming up in mid July and I expect it to be hot. I am looking for a economical (<$100) option to cool down the tent at night. I recently purchased a misting fan, but was disappointed with the lack of cooling and amount of water it put out (the tent would be soaked). Anyone familiar with evaporative coolers (and do they put out much water). Any other ideas for cooling at night?

Answer
Just some thoughts I had, since I've camped in the heat a lot. I can't do much since I backpack; it was only last year that I bought a cheap personal fan. If you can get one that will blow into one end of a flimsy tube (like the plastic sleeves they put newspapers into, taped end-to-end), put the fan at the top of the tent and blow the hot air outside. You could pin the exhaust end to the inside of a screen. Draw in outside air through screen at the bottom. If you can stand the breeze, have a small fan blow directly on you. To shield your tent from sun during the day, try one or more of those aluminized plastic emergency blankets.

Swamp coolers (evaporative) only work in very dry air, and need a steady supply of both power and water. It can sit outside the tent and be ducted in with the flimsy tube idea. This cools the air stream, so the cooled air must flow through the tent--it can't be bottled up. Check the power and water consumption and make sure it'll work in your climate.

Ice coolers can cool and dehumidify. Some small models can sit inside the tent with hoses going to an ice chest sitting outside, but they use a huge amount of ice and need steady power (for a pump to bring cold fluid from the chest and a fan for the heat exchanger inside). I've heard that the cheap ones don't work. If it works, you'll need to provide for the condensate drip.

True air conditioners consume the most power but would work the best, assuming a plug-in campsite. Your best value would be the smallest unit that you can find at a thrift store such as Goodwill, or a closeout store such as Ollie's. Set it outside and duct the air into the tent. Unless it's an unusually large tent, it will probably get too cold to close up the tent with a second duct returning air to the unit (that one would have to be a collapsible spring wound one), so you could simply let it blow through. This will cool AND dehumidify.

Air conditioners go as small as 4,000 BTUs. For a small tent, you can get as low as 1,000 BTUs by looking for an "enclosure air conditioner" made to cool electronic equipment in cabinets. They're smaller and consume less power, but they won't be really cheap unless you can find a surplus/used one, and they're still about 50 pounds.

The smaller you go, the more complicated it gets. To a point. You need a steady supply of compressed air to run a vortex tube, but these are also made for enclosure cooling. Put compressed air in one end, get two streams of air out--one hot and vented to the outside, the other up to incredibly cold. They shriek, but they're also sold with mufflers. Don't even think of getting one without.

If your tent is small enough, try circulating air through one of those cube refrigerators using ducts and a small fan. These are in your price range, and you can sometimes pick those refrigerators up for free if you cruise around during a township's large item pick up day. Fasten some sort of finned heat exchanger to the icebox. If you're ambitious, cut most of the case off from around the guts, being careful not to disturb the tubes. Add the finned heat exchanger. Pop rivet what you need of the case back on, adding a fan. And a second fan on the coils in back. This sounds like a worthy project. It will drip. It could also ice up. So? Space the heat exchanger fins farther apart. What do you want for free?

How long would it take to kill myself if I filled a tent with gas from 4 camping stoves?

I'm going to gas myself to death this friday because I have had it with living in a facist plutocracy.

Answer
Dear friend, the more important question you need to be considering is ,"What are the chances of ending up in terrible long suffering in HELL,if someone kills theirself ? " And many Theologians will tell you that the chances are pretty high that hell would be your destination. That alone ought to be plenty of good reason to cancel thoughts of suicide friend. Many things in life are reversible and changing, and oscillating between happy times and depressed times ;but in hell its ALWAYS BAD, never happy, unreversible, and always horrible. Its hard to explain this to you younger people, but us older ones look back at many times in our life that we went through a temporary depression, or bad times or negative frame of mind----and guess what, things got better, we got out of the valleys, we had super happy and precious moments and times that occasionally overshadowed and put out of memory the bad negative times. Stick around and you will be truly amazed at life friend. LOL AND PEACE

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

BB

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

What all do we need to bring on our 2-3 day camping adventure?

My friend and I want to go camping up north in Michigan by taking out my two quads and just driving around and setting up camp anywhere right off the DNR trails. What kind of food should we bring so it will still be good after two or three days? Also what other supplies might we need to take? Thanks for the help!
Also without breaking the bank, were college kids and don't have tons to spend.

Answer
Its always a fantastic adventure to explore the great outdoors. Since you're taking quads you can take any foods you want in an ice chest and be ok. Just be sure to safeguard it from the critters.

As for cooking its a matter of personal preferences. If you cook over a fire it takes longer before you're ready to eat as you will have to let the fire burn down and get some good coals going for your grill. You can literally cook anything over a fire. Just like you use a barbeque grill at home. You can also put pots on the grill and cook just like you would your stove at home. So if you're wanting to save some money in the beginning, you really don't have to invest in a stove and stove equipment at this time.
You'll be much warmer and drier in a sleeping bag with a sleeping pad underneath you than blankets on an air mattress. If you want extra cush or your'e snow camping use two sleeping pads underneath you. Besides your tent, your sleeping bag is the most important piece of camping equipment. If you spend a sleepless night shivering away, your trip is going to be miserable. Check out 3-season-sleeping-bags.com for information on all different types of sleeping bags. Click on any of the pictures to learn more about that particular sleeping bag.
You probably already have a lot of stuff that you can use for camping in your house.

Here's a short list of camping equipment:

Shelter - Tent, poles, stakes, ground sheet
Sleeping - Sleeping bag, sleeping pad
Essentials - Water bottles, waterproof matches/lighter, map & compass, basic first aid kit, whistle and/or signal mirror, nylon cord-50', pocket knife, emergency blanket, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, water purification, headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries. Keep these items in your day pack when you go hiking or quading and exploring.
Cooking - Cook set, spoon/knife/fork set, biodegradable soap, scrub pad, food
Base camp accessories - Cooler/ice chest, water bag or large jug, dish pan, paper towels, lantern, storage containers for food, Ziploc bags, large spoon, knife, spatula, can opener, small whisk, small grater, hot pad holders, plate/bowl, cup, cutting board, aluminum foil, spice kit.
Miscellaneous - bandana, camera, binoculars, repair/sewing kit, fishing gear, journal/pen or pencil, reading material, nature guides, trail games, trowel, toilet paper, personal toiletries, lip balm, bug repellant, towel, day pack.

Make sure you take clothing appropriate for the climate you expect to encounter.
Inner Layer - wicking layer: long underwear top & bottom, liner socks, outer socks, t-shirt, shorts
Insulation Layer - Wool, synthetic or fleece shirt/sweater down/fiberfill jacket, wool or fleece pants, gloves, wool or fleece hat.
Protective layer - Rain/windproof jacket & pants, gaiters, hiking boots waterproofed, camp shoes, sun hat.
Happy Trails to you!

How can I get rid of Daddy Long Leg spiders while we camp?

suzycrmchz

Going camping next week in Michigan. Last year we went to the same place and we had a crazy amount of Daddy Long Leg spiders...both inside the tent and on the tent when we would wake up in the morning. My daughter is terrified of spiders and it really kind of ruined her time because of this. She's not a little kid - she's an adult and has a true fear of spiders. Any suggestions for a repellent to keep them away from our tent or campsite? Preferably a "natural" repellent.

Answer
I tried to find a natural repellant, however the best article I found was

I have used borax as a general spider repellant and that worked well

Laaaadeeee

where can i buy a light, inexpensive sleeping bag somewhere around Greenwich village Manhattan? i really need this! thx in advance!
sorry about the wrong category

Answer
Hi Maria,

It's hard for anyone to answer your question at the moment because we don't know what you plan on using the sleeping bag for,,, Like if you plan on using it so you can sleep in somebody else's home, while you are visiting, then you can get by with any reasonable-quality cheap bag. But if you are planning on going camping -- like outdoors in a camping tent -- then it is likely to be a whole lot colder, so you will need a better-quality bag. Something thicker with more insulation, and maybe even a hood for your head.

You also asked that the bag be light. Well, the lightest sleeping bags are down bags. These are filled with goose down, the fluffy chest feathers that keep these birds warm even in freezing Arctic climates. But down bags are more expensive, from maybe $150 to $400 and more, like if you're planning to sleep on Mt. Everest.

A cheap sleeping bag can be bought for $40 or so. But it will have synthetic filling, not down. And it will be heavier and bulkier than a down bag suited to the same temperature range.

Rather than limiting yourself to Greenwich Village, you could go to any Kmart or WalMart for a cheap sleeping bag. And it will be fine for a sleepover at some friend's place.

I hope this helps you some. :-)

I read some where that when you keep yourself busy and look at the things that you've accomplished rather then looking at the things you need to accomplish, the year goes by faster. I'm keeping a list of things I've accomplished in 2012 and things I could accomplish. Here's my list of things to accomplish so far;
-Go without meat for longer then 3 months.
-Complete an entire short story.
-Go to my first concert.
-Maintain the relationship I have with John
-Meet and get to know atleast one person every month.
-Give up the computer AND t.v. for a week
-Submit an entry to Postsecret

-Pull an all night and still go to school
-Have a picnic
-Have a yard sale
-Tell a random person they're attractive & make their day.

-Write a letter to yourself in the future. Then hide it. Maybe in the pocket of a coat you never, ever wear.
-Write the stuff you like about your body on your body with marker, then take a shower(:
-Spend the night in the cemetary.
-Learn to write legibly with my left hand
-Go to the movie theater JUST for some popcorn.
-Build a blanket tent and go "Camping"
-Play in the rain in just my bathing suit
-Carve initials into a tree.

Answer
Write at least one book (and get it published)
Run for political office (and preferably win)
Own a boat large enough to sleep at least four people
Work for myself, or at least as a freelancer
Own a dog, preferably one that likes boats (and cats)
Visit Africa. Preferably Tanzania; a doctor friend of mine has spent some time there and raves about how wonderful it is
Visit the Canadian Arctic
Visit Antarctica
Visit Atlin, BC, where Mr E Man spent the first few years of his life. Iâve seen the family photos. It looks stunning.
Visit New Zealand
Kayak Haida Gwaii
Kayak the Galapagos
See Wales whales from a kayak and/or from my hypothetical boat
See great apes in the wild before they go extinct, if it is possible to do so without further endangering them. First choice a sasquatch orangs, then gorillas, bonobos, and finally chimps (which are still totes awesome even if they are my last choice)
See a Canucks game in another city, preferably during the playoffs
See an England game in the football or (preferably) rugby world cup (Iâve already seen Scotland get destroyed by South Africa in the rugby world cup at Murrayfield)
Go into space, if it is possible to do so without bankrupting myself or the climate
As a consolation prize for probably never going into space, fly first class on Virgin. Apparently you get free manicures and shoulder massages in your seat
Ski a black diamond run with style and grace and without whimpering, all previous attempts having been the opposite
Do a bobsled run
Easy peasy, right? I already own a nautical compass⦠Iâll buy that boat piece by piece if I have to!

2012 Resolutions

Build a personal website that can function as an online bio, writing portfolio, and general purpose landing page for new contacts who are likely to be put off by some of the sillier content of my blog and Twitter feed
Use said website in emails to my federal member of parliament and municipal government representatives inquiring about volunteering opportunities
Volunteer for my federal MP and/or municipal government representatives
Be more assertive at work, especially when it comes to protecting my weekends (and my sanity!)
Write at least a first draft of a book proposal
And a short story
Do something new, scary, and/or challenging (along the lines of Vancouver Change Camp or a new outdoor activity) at least once a month
Write and snail mail at least one proper letter per month to a friend or relative

How do you feel about predictions that 'The Rapture' will occur in May of this year (2011)?

Alan H

According to 'Family Radio', the 'Judgment Day'(the Rapture) will begin May 21, 2011 and the Earth will be destroyed on October 21, 2011.

Of course this is all nonsense, but I would like to know, does it scare you that a very powerful group is saying the world will end this year? Do you feel that this is another 'Heaven's Gate' or Jonestown type cult?

The 'Family Radio' website says:

"Judgment Day, May 21, 2011, The Bible Guarantees it!"

It shows the year 2012 crossed out, as if to say there is no 2012.

The host of the radio show, 89 year-old Harold Camping, has said he "knows" he will be taken up into Heaven before the end of the world.

I wonder, does he intend to participate in some mass suicide?

No crazies please.
"Rolling apocalypses." Very funny..lol

Answer
Hi there - good question.

I did not know that Camping was proclaiming then end of the world in May , but you were right.
I checked his web site and it said in big letters.

''THE END OF THE WORLD IS ALMOST HERE! HOLY GOD WILL BRING JUDGMENT DAY ON MAY 21, 2011''

I GUARANTEE you , the world will NOT end on that day , and Camping will be proved to be a false teacher.
The unmistakable fact is that according to Mark 13:32-33 is that no man has advanced warning of the time when the end of this world system will take place.

But for the moment lets consider how Camping and his FR is wrong.
Camping bases his 'end of the world' date using a known start date and adding 7 days.

In his view the Bible says that each day equals 1000 years.
So Camping is saying that the end will be at the end of the seventh day , which is 7000 years., and by his calculations that comes to May 2011.

Unfortunately his calculations are based on a fundamental error.

His reckons that a day truly is , and is exactly 1000 years.
Camping and co' believe this as they take the account of creation to be a literal 7 days long.

Exodus 20:11 .''For in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea and everything that is in them, and he proceeded to rest on the seventh day.''

However, the Bible does NOT says that 1 day for God EQUALS 1000 years in man's time.

It says this instead.

Psalm 84:10 ''For a day in your courtyards is better than a thousand [elsewhere]. I have chosen to stand at the threshold in the house of my God Rather than to move around in the tents of wickedness.''

2 Peter 3:8 ''.However, let this one fact not be escaping YOUR notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. ''

The scriptures may seem to indicate that a day is a thousand years but it does NOT say that it is equal.

This next verse goes contrary to the idea that 1000 years equals one day , it now compares it to a mere night watch , which is obviously far less than 1 day.

Psalm 90:4 ''For a thousand years are in your eyes but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch during the night.''

In the next verse we see another reference of a day with God , and it too does not indicate that the day is equal to 1000 years in man's time.

Revelation 16:14 .''-- to gather them together to the war of the great day of God the Almighty.''

When you go through all the instances where a day and God are concerned the vast majority of them do not indicate a specific time duration , and definitely nothing to indicate that one day equals 1000 years.

On Campings site he did not show any scriptual proof to back the claim that 1000 years equals one day., because there is none.

This is a most fundamental requirement for his 'theory' and his teaching to be true.

The facts is , according to the Bible is that days are not fixed in duration , they can be short or long.
Some people have a problem understanding this , especially when it comes to the creation account in Genesis , but it is really very straight forward.

I am a man, I used to work building houses , it was a hard job.
Some days I was at work from sun up to well past sun down.,, on other days my work day was only a few hours long if I accomplished the days assigned tasks quickly.
This is not hard to comprehend , my work days varied in length , but I can still call them quite correctly , my work days.
Just as my work days varied in the exact time length so can Gods.

Jehovah Gods work days vary in duration and he kept going until the task set out upon was completed.
When looking back on the creation account , this means that some days could have been millions if not billions of years long , and some may have been very short by comparison....Whatever it took to get the job done.

So back to Camping.
His whole theory is based on fixed 1000 years days , but this is NOT supported in the Bible.

Camping is simply WRONG., and he is misleading his listeners.

Matthew 15:14 ''LET them be. Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.â

By his own words he will prove that he is not following the true God of the Bible - Jehovah.

Matthew 7:15-16 ''âBe on the watch for the false prophets that come to YOU in sheepâs covering, but inside they are ravenous wolves. By their fruits YOU will recognize them''

What kind of stuff do I need if I go camping?

I'm planning a surprise camping trip for my boyfriend and I since he's never been. I have to plan early so that I cant budget all the things I need to buy for it over time. I haven't been camping since I was a kid so I forget all the things I'll need to bring. Obviously I need a tent, which I happen to have, and sleeping bags. What else should I bring? Also does anyone know any brands or specific sleeping bags with room for two people, or that can be zipped together? We will be car camping for sure so hauling in stuff isn't a problem, we have a truck. Thank you to anyone to answers :)

Answer
Use a checklist for the gear you need,
http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/family-camping-checklist.html

Prepare for the season,
http://www.princeton.edu/~oa/winter/wintcamp.shtml

Choose a destination
http://www.totalescape.com/

Make reservations, some destinations get booked six months in advance, like national parks.
http://www.reserveamerica.com/
http://www.recreation.gov/
http://woodalls.com/

Buying camping gear during the off season will be a bit troubling as most places that carry it do so seasonally and what they have will be at full price and in limited quantity. Walmart would be the low price leader for the type of gear you need even though their prices would not be at their seasonal lowest They do have winter rated sleeping bags made by Coleman that would zip together. If you have a truck I suggest a camper shell at the minimum and you could shack up in the back of that. weather being no issue at all then.

Does Martinsville Speedway give tent campers an extra vehicle pass, or is there a free lot for a second car?

Doc

I'm planning on tent camping at this weekends race. The website doesn't answer the question, nor their phone tree. I've contacted them via e-mail, and no response. I'm meeting my brother there, and I need to know if the track has a lot they allow the additional vehicle to park in, and if there is a charge. Thei "fan guide" leaves a rather large grey area here.

Answer
i've never camped on the speedway grounds, so i wouldn't know. but here's what i always do. on route 220, right across the street from the track, you'll see a little motel called the travel inn. if you are standing with your back to the track looking at the travel inn, you'll see an empty lot on the right. it's owned by a man named lee ramsey, you can camp right there, that's what i always do, just negotiate a price with him for the weekend, he's very reasonable. we usually have that lot to ourselves (we know several people that stay in the motel so we have showers and stuff) we have a camp fire going all weekend. unfortunately, i'm not going next week, it'll be the first october martinsvill race i've missed in years. or, immediately to the right of THAT lot is a much bigger camp ground, still directly across the street from the track, who's rates are also very reasonable. in either lot, you'll have a great time, you'll be right in the middle of tailgating central. if you click on my profile, then click on my facebook link, go to my photos and i have a bunch of pics on there from that campsite under "martinsville photos"
