What are views on folding campers / trailor tents?

0

We have three small children and want to camp in comfort - we have seen a trailor tent for a very good proce on eBay - what are your views?

I want to go away for 3-4 weeks and cannot bear the thought of staying in a normal tent for that time, and cannot afford a hotel...

Answer
Pop-up campers are ideal for families with small children. Most are light enough to be easily towed behind a 6-cylinder vehicle without a huge sacrifice in fuel economy. Unlike motorized RV's, a pop-up does not need separate liability insurance or expensive maintenance (though inexpensive RV insurance is advisable on newer units that still have good value).

One big advantage of a pop-up versus tent camping is your camper can be cleaned and re-stocked after each trip so you just need to add perishable foods and clothing to head out on your next adventure. There is enough storage space to keep all of your gear permanently inside the camper, either in the cabinets or in storage bins on the floor. So you don't need to shoe-horn your tent, sleeping bags, cooking gear, food and clothing in the car with the family, making the driving portion of your trip more comfortable and enjoyable.

The other big advantage is the additional comfort and protection. Thick foam mattresses and heavy canvas tent material, combined with the solid roof, floor and partial walls of the main body, offer additional insulation, weather protection and security versus a tent. You can choose a model that has a propane furnace to safely heat your camper in cold weather, and fans or even air conditioning to keep cool in the summer.

Most pop-ups have a galley with a sink, fresh water supply, and a propane stove that can be used inside or outside. They carry one or two 20Lb propane tanks externally so you don't have to deal with disposable propane canisters (you might need adapters and extra hose if you want to use a gas BBQ grill). There is a 12V battery to run lights and small appliances when no AC electrical hook-ups are available, but you also have the option to hook-up to "shore power" to run your air conditioner (if equipped or added), microwave oven (again, if equipped or added) or other higher-power devices. Small 3-way refrigerators are common in larger pop-ups.

Some things to consider when choosing a pop-up:

1. Where will everyone sleep?
_ a.) Small kids can share a bed, 3 small kids fit on a king-size mattress.
_ b.) The dinette folds into a bed, but only 48" wide, so sharing is "intimate."
_ c.) The dinette might be too short for a single teen/adult. Check before you buy.
_ d.) Older boys don't like sharing beds. Make sure you have sleeping options.
_ e.) Kids like to invite relatives and friends. Complicates all the above.
_ f.) An add-a-room and some cots can provide additional sleeping options.

2. Bathroom or not?
We never had a bathroom in our pop-ups and didn't miss it. Worst case is you setup a chemical toilet and shower bag in a privacy shelter outside, but mostly we relied on the campground facilities for toilet and shower needs. Our hybrid camper (a full-box travel trailer with fold-out bed ends) has a small bathroom, which we use when dry camping, but we prefer to use the campground facilities when available to avoid adding humidity or smell to the camper. No built-in bathroom also eliminates the most hated of RV chores: dealing with the sewer line and holding tanks.

3. Water heater or not?
Even without an inside bathroom or nearby facilities, a quick hot shower is a welcome luxury. When dry camping it is much preferred to bag showers, and at a full-service campground it makes quick clean-ups after swimming more convenient. The only disadvantage is a shower will use up water quickly when dry camping, and takes-up storage space.

4. Air conditioner or not?
They often ice-up and stop working when you want them the most, particularly in a pop-up camper that's not as well insulated as a full-box travel trailer or motorized RV. The A/C requires an electrical hook-up or a minimum 3500-watt generator. A/C is noisy and a generator makes things worse. We found that even in the desert during summer, once we acclimated to the temperatures, nights were comfortable with only fans. But in hot and humid, A/C might be desirable.

5. Awnings
One awning is highly recommended. Two is even better. We rarely ate or just hung-out inside our campers, even with the large hybrid, even in the rain and cold weather. With our last pop-up we had one awning on each side. The "front" awning was used as our hang-out area, sometimes with an add-a-room to keep out the bugs. The "back" awning was where we setup our kitchen and dining area.

6. Storage
An outside storage trunk is a great feature. Just remember to unload it before extending the front bed slide. Some pop-ups have a slide-out drawer that can be accessed when the bed is extended, but this cuts down on storage capacity and doesn't allow large items. Use stacking storage bins to storage space; small in cabinets, large to stack on the floor during transit.

Always buy used. Most people use their camper 2 or 3 times a year, so even a 10 year old camper - if well maintained - can be in great condition at huge savings.

We are looking for great camping areas north of San Francisco along the coast. We want to stay fairly close to the ocean, have dogs, bikes, hiking shoes and a tent. We will go as far as the Oregon border but hopefully not that far.

We hope to stay in 2-3 different locations with different environments.

What are your favorite camping areas and why?

Thanks so much!

Answer
My favorites are:

Van Damme State Park just south of Mendocino. This park has a sheltered cove that is great for kayaking (tours available), and a really nice trail up the Little River. Mendocino is worth a visit.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Elk Prairie Campground). This park has wonderful redwood forests. Don't miss the drive out to the coast. The hike through Fern Canyon is a must.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (almost to the Oregon border, but the best campground on the list). This is a spectacular campground on the banks of the Smith River. Stout Grove is just across the river from the campground and is one of the most magnificent groves of redwoods I've ever seen. The drive on Howland Hill road is incredible (dirt road, passable in most cars).

Not bad:

MacKerricher State Park. On the coast with lots of harbor seals.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Albee Creek Campground (may not have trailer sites). The nearby Rockefeller Forest is the largest old-growth redwood forest left in California. Rumors are that the tallest tree in the world is in this grove, but the people who measure these things are pretty secretive.

Where can one tent camp in USA for free?

bitegrande

I want to do primitive camping (campfire, bathing in a river or pond, digging a latrine like in Boy Scout handbook) and enjoy privacy and nature. I'd prefer the warm South.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Here in Oregon, if the campsite does not have water, the site is free. These are usually 100 miles inland from the ocean. You cannot dig a toilet, but there are pit toilets or port-a-johns available.

Other than that, you will need to contact private landowners for permission to camp.

What is a best tent for camping in the heat?

b w

I am going to a festival that the heats gets a little much in the mornings, I understand tent fans are around so i guess which is the best tent fan/ tent combo. I do not want a pro one thats super $$ just in case it has to be left behind at the concert (on the other side of the country) heh thank you for your time and answers

Answer
Tarps and hammocks are the best. They make hammocks with mosquito netting built in if bugs are a problem.

Tarps eliminate walls and you get more ventilation. No privacy really. You can pitch it low over a rope (tied between two trees and knotted to maximize opposing forces, you want it really tight) into an A frame that doesn't quite hit the ground, or into a modified A frame where one side is longer than the other, or a flat plane on an incline with the tarp opening to the private side. You still get more circulation under a tarp because the ends are open, you can cover them in rain with what is called a "beak", by using a poncho or a piece of plastic.

When you use tarps, you also want a ground cover, this could be a piece of 6 mm plastic, a neat sheet, or a piece of nylon from Walmart's clearance fabric dept or even a trash bag that you cut open.

Campmor and REI have great tarps, look for their 8x10 nylon tarp, it is waterproof, and very easy to use, grommets, for about 40 US dollars. You have to get your own line to pitch it with. Nylon masonry cord in bright colors is great. I always color coded mine to find corners vs sides. Tarps can also be plastic, such as you would throw over the bed of your pickup or a stack of firewood, or you can use any piece of waterproof material that you can tie corners into a sheetbend (a knot). You can get all kinds of tarps, all different carry weights, etc. I always had great results with the first one I mentioned, from www.campmor.com

Mosquito hammocks are great. For shelter over you, pitch a tarp as above, just higher, no ground cover needed. What is so cool about these is that you get air circulation all around you. Sucks in the winter so I always hit the ground but in summer there is NOTHING better. Your pack goes underneath you for maximum shelter of you and your gear, if you have it with you. So you don't need a lot of surface area under the shelter, use a smaller tarp, save packweight.

Hennessey Hammocks offer a lot of hammocks, they all have rainflys which attach directly to the hammock, eliminating the need for a tarp. Very popular. I never did like them.

Other hammock brands, these are cottage industries for the most part...so supporting small businessmen, you will pay more to buy from the little guys:

Speer
mosquitohammock.com
Crazy Creek
Clark or Clarke (not sure sp)
Byer of Maine
Travel Hammock

(above are all silk or nylon hammocks) Prices for these vary a lot. With a bugnet you will pay more. Without, they can start at 15 dollars....Hennesseys start at about 100 dollars.

You can also get rope/mesh/net ones that leave nice waffle prints on your butt, and these are available at most discount stores for about 10 dollars.

Have fun, don't forget your bug net if you are near water.

Where can I tent camp for free in New Jersey?

tent for camping price on ... Quest 600 Tent Camping Equipment - review, compare prices, buy online
tent for camping price image

ahmelody71

I searched the internet and couldn't find any useful info, and don't wanna pay for a guide book. I am VERY short on money and would like to camp for just one night somewhere in New Jersey, legally, and for free. Any recommendations?

Answer
I am a camper, and I used to live in NJ. Unfortunately I do not know of any legal free camping locations in the state. State (and county) parks would probably be the cheapest. The website for NJ State Parks lists camping fees at $20 in most parks. You might look on-line for county parks and check those prices. You could also consult camping guidebooks (like Woodall's) at your local library. As you search, keep in mind that camping locations near cities would usually be more expensive than those in more remote areas. Good luck.

What do I need to know about buying a camping tent?

Q. I have been shopping for an approximately 10x10 camping tent for car camping (not backpacking). I have looked online at REI, Campmor, EMS, Sierra Trading... and in the store at Walmart and Dick's Sporting goods. I've compared features so I know what's typically available. I'm trying to find out why there is such a huge variance in prices... what is the value of a $200 tent vs. an $80 one with nearly the same features. (is it the material?) I'm looking for other people's advice and experiences!

Answer
Things like double-layered fabric, sealed seams and ripstop fabric make for a better and more durable tent that will keep you warm & dry. Same goes for aluminum poles and stakes. I think REI gives really good value for the money, especially their campdome series - I have had one for years and it's still in great shape. They also are very easy to set up. If you plan to use it more than one or two times, a quality tent is worth the money. Sure, you could get the Motel 6 of tents, but I think the Holiday Inn Express is worth a few more dollars. I do not recommend the "Four Seasons" of tents (like Mountain Hardware or North Face) unless you've got $$ to burn or plan to use it more than you use your bed.

The longer one seems to be made up of 6 sections.

They are currently the UK's largest camping brand. Their products are exclusive to Millets and Blacks stores.

I suggest contacting these stores to see if they can get parts for you.

How to get up everest?

I am planning a trip to Everest and I am trying to figure out how to get up. I was thinking the fantasy ridge. I know the easiest are the southeast ridge and the north col. what route shoul I take

Answer
In life, and sometimes in death, Mount Everest has had a lasting effect on all of those who have challenged its heights. It can vanquish those who disrespect it, and mercilessly test those who honor it. Yet Everest is indifferent to your presence. Climb it and you will receive a lifetime dose of humility and exhilaration.

1. Start training today. Take mountaineering courses that teach you about technique, equipment, routes and survival. Then begin a minimum of two to three years of regular practice climbs in high alpine terrain, including steep faces, rough rocks, night climbs, ice falls and snow climbs.

-----------------------
2. Get a complete physical checkup. You'll need healthy veins and arteries to pump lots of blood to your brain and muscles, as well as to warm your body. Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol down.

-----------------------
3. Raise the cash. You'll need plenty, even a low-budget trip will cost $25,000, with guided package trips soaring to as much as $60,000. Realize that $10,000 goes to permits alone; then add travel, food, equipment, oxygen, insurance and Sherpa fees. Consider approaching corporations for sponsorship deals to cover your expenses.

-----------------------
4. Plan a May expedition. The weather is most cooperative then (when it isn't a whiteout, blowing 100-mph winds, and 50 degrees below zero). Six months in advance, you'll need to file for permits and send copies of passports and climbing letters of recommendation for your team to the Nepal Ministry and Administration, as well as to a trekking agency to help you with transporting your gear. You'll also need to contract with Sherpas to aid you on your voyage. For more information, contact the Nepalese Embassies and Consulate Offices in Washington, D.C., or in Kathmandu, Nepal.

---------------------
5. Pack a first aid kit, medications, satellite phone, walkie-talkies, laptop computer, padlocks for bags, tents, sleeping bags, mountaineering clothing, climbing equipment and ropes, water, food, trash bags, sun-screen, vision protection, oxygen bottles and anything else you can fit on a yak or on your back, or that you can hire a Sherpa to carry for you. Make sure you've tested all your gear in cold, severe conditions before you pack it.
-------------------
6. Get yourself to Kathmandu, Nepal, where your expedition truly begins. You can fly a number of international carriers connecting through major airports; none of these flights will be direct or nonstop. Jet lag is guaranteed. Check in with the local authorities, pay your fees and organize your crew.

7. Trek from Lukla to Base Camp at 17,600 feet. Scale the Khumbu Icefall up to 19,500 feet. Rest at Camp I in the Valley of Silence. Push on to Camp II at 21,300 feet. Scale the Lhotse Face and climb to Camp III at 23,500 feet. Rest and acclimatize for the trip to Camp IV, which at 26,300 feet is the only camp located in the 'death zone.'
------------------------
8. Charge the summit when you have a weather window. Start early in the morning, before sunrise, with extra down mittens and plenty of oxygen.
------------------------
9. Sit atop the 29,028-foot summit and know that you are at the highest point on earth. And then mentally prepare for the descent, because getting down is just as dangerous.
-----------------------
10. Pack out all of your empty oxygen bottles and trash to get back your $4,000 environmental deposit and leave the mountain with good karma.

How can I make a special wash bucket for camping?

tents for camping at walmart on LitePack.com Hiking tips, camping tips campfire cooking.
tents for camping at walmart image

Badger

We will be drive in camping with no running water. I want to make a special wash bucket with some rags for everyone to be able to rinse hands and other dirtys. Should I use a little bleach in the water to keep it fresh? Maybe a little soap? Any other ideas?
Maybe salt water?

Answer
Some people keep a plastic rectangular tub in their sink (or one side of it) to soak dishes in. These come in various sizes and are very cheap. Found at Walmart, Kmart, etc. They make great camp sinks. They can also be taken into the tent for sponge bathing.

But your attempt to keep the water in the vessel "fresh" is futile. I would not put bleach or salt in it because nobody wants that stuff in their eyes.

A better approach is the "2 bucket" method. Bucket #1 holds clean water. One dips some clean water out of bucket #1 into the plastic tub, does what one wants with it, and then pours it out into bucket #2, which is waste water. That way the water source and the work bin stay clean and all the dirty stuff ends up in bucket #2. Buckets cost $3 at Home Depot. Just bring a dipper to remove water from bucket #1.

I assume you will have a water source, such as (my fave) 5 gallon blue plastic water jugs (like gas cans) with a spigot on each, available at Walmart for $10.

Just like condiments at the hot dog stand, one may set out near the wash tub some soap, bleach, or whatever for people to use, before dumping used water into bucket #2.

Not bad for a $12 solution, eh?

How can someone who hates camping make the most of it?

ADB

A friend invited me on a 3 night, 4 day camping trip with her and her family. I would really like to spend time with my friend, but I've never been much of an "outdoor girl". I like a nice hotel room over sleeping on the ground. That said, I need to get away and would really like to try something new. How do you make the most of a camping trip? What's the best way to sleep comfortably and avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitoes? Any hints, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Turn it into a glamping adventure by bringing all the comforts of home. The easiest way to do that is to use a recreational vehicle they can be rented for the day, the weekend, the week or all summer. These are a hotel on wheels basically and all campgrounds accommodate them.
http://www.cruiseamerica.com/?utm_source=adcenter&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=full

If that is not your thing then tenting can still be a clamping adventure but still just as costly for the first timer. You start with getting a spacious tent and then outfitting it with the state of the art air beds, warm fluffy sleeping bags and or bedding, and comfy camp chairs and a nice side table with a coleman lamp an indoor/outdoor rug by the door and you have a wonderful and comfortable set up.

Skeeters can be kept at bay the same way that you would in your own back yard and decorate your campsite to. You can set out citronella oil lanterns and candles and then use a deet based product on your clothing.

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

We`re traveling to Utah in 2 weeks and would like to do some backcountry camping in a tent. We`re looking for a nice campground which would make a nice base for hiking trips. If anybody could recommend a place in Zion National Park, something without RVs and for tents only.

Answer
The only thing I can fin that is anywhere near you description, without RV's is: Lava Point off Lava Point Rd., this is in the north/central part of the park near Sawmill Spring.

Others would be Zion National Park (South Campground) this might fit your needs better as you'll be close to all activities. You can't do much driving in the park and may need to use the shuttles. Also close is the Watchman Campground (435) 772-3256, both parks, same number.

All other parks are RV parks. I would call the above numbers for availability as this is a highly visited area.

Where are the closest camping grounds to Chicago?

My friends and I used to do this all the time although we were all dressed in black so they didn't dare talk to us. If I were you dress non threatening and geeky or something. Hmmm you can go to K-Mart and start drinking pops and eating food. They had this giant blue rolling M&M stand filled with candy at wal-mart and I would grab it and hump it throughout the store while running. just make sure you do all this stuff when a manager or clerk can see you. Particually one that looks in a bad mood. Heres a fun idea everyone pretend to go on a campout at Sears and bring a cooler and everything and try to camp in the tent displays. stick around as long as they can stand it. OHHHHH In home depot take a sh*t in a display toilet! ALL OF YOU! Go to and clothing store and pretend as though you are looking at clothes and then start to fake argue and just start kickin the crap out of each other knock over displays and throw stuff. Go to a gas station and you can do the same thing. Thats all i can think of right now. Have fun! and don't worry about the people on here givin you crap for being "immature" just live your life the way you want to while you still can before your a bitter old person

Thank you for the compliment. I had a lot of fun as a Teen. The one I really want to do is "camp out" at sears or hmmm I just thought of another one but I don't know if you have one there....Dick's sporting goods. You could do that there too. One thing thought if you do it you have to tell me how it went. should be great fun.

how to plan a road trip?

sleeping b

my friends and i are planning a road trip for next summer coming from NY to CA and we'd like tips and advice from experienced travelers. Things like, how much money should we bring? what's a good route? is a tent a good idea? what are the best places (cheap) to stay? any really nice places to check out? best car for a road trip? none of us have ever done a road trip so any help would be appreciated!

thanks!

ps my friends are 18, 18 and 16. i dont no if that helps or not...

Answer
Check out http://www.hostels.com/ for cheap places to stay. Camping gear's a good idea. You can check out the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) websites in each state for places to camp along the way. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a national DNR website where you can get campsite information.

I'd recommend bringing as much money as you can, but don't tell anyone you have it. Things come up (car problems, for example), and it's better to have the money and not need it than vice versa. But, be smart. Don't spend it unless you need to, keep it in several different places in case one of your bags gets stolen, etc. If word gets out that you have a decent amount of cash on you (or access to it via a debit card), you're more susceptible to robbery, or just plain mooching.

As far as what to see, that depends mostly on your interests. Personally, I really like the outdoors and do a lot of hiking. If you're of the same mind, you might like traveling through Wisconsin and Minnesota. I got off the interstate for a while on a trip from Indiana to Minneapolis and drove along the Mississippi river between Wisconsin and Iowa. It was a beautiful drive. You could go to Chicago, check out some of the sights (Field Museum, Chicago Art Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Sears Tower, John Hancock Building), then cut over to Dubuque, Iowa, and then head north from there. While in Minneapolis, stop by the Mall of America. Then head west into South Dakota, see Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands National Park.

Anyway, there's a few ideas to get you started. Have fun, and above all, be safe. BTW, one of your friends is 16? How does his/her parents feel about this?

Seen a advertisement for a particular brand but having second thoughts on lugging that thing all over the country.

Answer
If your motorcycle will handle the load, pop-up campers are a great way to travel. No more fighting with tents in the dark, and you can carry a lot of your gear in the trailer, so you don't have to stuff saddle bags and strap things down to the bike every morning.

The only thing I have to stress is that you NEED a big bike, like a Gold Wing or a big Harley touring bike to handle the weight and the wind drag from a trailer. The trailer is wider than the bike, so you can't cut those tight corners any more. If you Do buy one, take some time getting used to towing it before you set out on that Great American Camping Vacation.

Where are good places to go camping in So Cal during the winter.?

riley

My friends and i want to go somewhere not too far away from Los Angeles that will be fairly cheap. We want to go somewhere with snow but only have regular tents. There are about 12 of us going. Also it needs to be somewhere where there are not too many other people because we tend to be very loud and want to do our own thing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Wanting snow and getting it in so cal is not very likely. Best places it may happen all together and still be accessible with privacy and be cheap are fewer still. The higher the altitude the more likely the snow, if weather permits. So you will be looking at the Big bear district of the San bernardino national forest and the back country behind Fawnskin or Heart bar. These area's have hike in or 4wd destinations that you can get away from the crowds at and possibly get a good winter snow campsite.

How to choose a family base camping tent?

I am planning to buy a family camping tent, what things should I consider?

Answer
1. Consider how many people will be sleeping in the tent and if you'll be requiring one or two tents to house everyone. Make sure you have enough room for everyone to be comfortable. Every tent has its dimensions specified on the package, listing how many people it will house and how big it is. If you're looking for roomy comfort, subtract the number of people the tent says it will hold by one or two.

2. Figure out what style of tent will best suit your needs. There are two basic types of tents: dome and cabin. While there are a variety of styles of both, each has its own advantages and disadvantages. A dome tent is easier to assemble, having only two poles for the tent and one for the top cover. Since it's shaped like a dome, you'll give up some space in its height. A cabin tent offers more room since it is built in a square shape, but because it has more poles, it can take longer to assemble and be heavier to carry. If you're looking to house more than four people comfortably and have only one tent, a cabin tent is probably the best option.

3. Consider what extra requirements you need in your tent to properly accommodate you and your group. Do you want an extra attached screen room or a tent with several rooms? Do you have a tall person in the pack that will want to stand up straight while inside the tent? Will you be spending large amounts of time inside the tent? All of these things need to be thought out before you buy a tent. There are many varieties of tents on the market that come at a variety of prices.

4. Think about the area where you will be setting up your base camp tent and what the weather will be like. If you'll be camping in a cold region, you don't want a tent that has a screened top with a liner that allows more air inside. You also don't want a tent that allows little ventilation if you're staying in a hot area.

5. Consider the camping experience of the people you're camping with. If you're a novice camper, you might want a tent that's easy to set up. Generally, the fewer poles you have to deal with, the easier it is to set up and take down and the lighter weight.

What are the 5 best camping areas on the Northern Coast of California?

blueskys

At "Bailey Cove", each site has a tent pad, picnic table, raised fire ring, bear boxes, and paved parking spur. And each camping site has brick pavers which provide increased accessibility.

I am looking for somewhere family friendly, with good spacious, shady tent sites. I don't like rowdy crowds either like you find at places like Lake Berryessa, (drunken teenagers). Where else would someone recommend in the forest near the mountains in California. Anywhere from Sequoia NP up to Oregon border. Thank you!

There are several nice spots on the upper sacramento river, north of redding, and up to dunsmuir. check them out. Castle Crags has some good ones

When is the best time to camp in Maine?

Seamus

I am from Louisiana, and would like to take a camping trip in Maine next year. I've heard it is most beautiful when the colors are changing in the fall. Anyone have any insider info on the best time of year to capture that? Also, any advice on where to camp would be helpful too. We like to semi rough it. Camping with tents, but prefer camp sites that offer restrooms and showers.

Answer
Well hello! Glad your thinking about Maine. Right now, 11/12/13 the leaves have changed and it is quite cold (below freezing) in the Augusta region. I suggest early to mid Octoberfor your excursion. Goto central maone as well, or southern, somewhere inbetween. If you go fartger north you will be cold.

Am I allowed to set up a tent and camp anywhere in Maine?

I am going to Maine next week and I have a cabin that I am renting for a few days. But the other days I am going to just pitch a tent somewhere. All I can find online are designated camp grounds and laws for in the camp grounds. Is it legal to camp anywhere?

Answer
No it is not legal to camp "anywhere". You have never been able to camp anywhere but used to be able to do so in a lot more places a few years ago then now. The number of places throughout the vast paper company owned lands that you are allowed to camp has diminished greatly over the past few years. Aside from established campgrounds that you pay a fee for there are also still quite a few designated campsites throughout the forest lands that allow camping. The best source for this information is the Maine "Gazetteer" from Delorme, it provides a lot of information on campsites from primitive ones to the fee ones.

Be certain you know before you pitch your tent. You do not want to be charged with trespassing. Unless you are going to Northern areas of the state and want to do some primitive camping I would suggest camping at one of the many State parks, some of them have some good tent sites, not all allow camping though.

Fell free to shot me a message if I can try to help more if I am familiar with the particular area of the state you are going.

So, my family and I are trying to find a nice tent-camping and fishing park before school starts up again near the end of August. We've been to the Pinnacles and San Luis Reservoir and although nice, we're still looking. Someone told me Angel Island, but my brother-in-law is freaked out by being on an island overnight (I don't know why), so I'm looking for help.

Any suggestions?

What is the biggest camping tent available?

anonymous

I am leading a youth group camping trip this summer and I'm looking for a very large tent to accommodate optimally 15-16 people? I have looked at several 12 person tents (Gettysburg 12 Family Camping Tunnel Tent, Trekker⢠20' x 16' Cabin Tent and the Copper Canyon 12), but was hoping for something maybe a bit bigger.

Positive reviews about waterproofing is also a must. Our tents last year leaked horribly in the rain, even with the rain fly on and tarp underneath.

Answer
How much money do you have, how big do you need to go?
http://armytents.com/tents/tent-tmpr.html

As far as managing a group several smaller tents would be more suitable, you can arrange the tents around a central canopy for example like the circling of the wagon trains of old. this works best with vertical wall tents of the cabin styles like the Copper Canyon 12 or the Coleman Instant 8. Figure also gear for each camper unless they are on a cot each person will have gear that takes up sleeping space so figure 1 extra space for 3 persons is needed so a four man tent actually comfortably sleeps three, an eight man sleeps 6 and so on.

Personally as having been there done that thousands of times as a scoutmaster, The Coleman Tent family has the best reputation for staying dry in and not breaking the bank, so I highly recommend them.
