Lauren Gra

I am looking for summer over-night camps that are 8-14 days. Google is apparently not a good tool for finding such camps. She would prefer something with cabins or tent camping, not backpacking. She loves the mountains here in CO and wants a camp up there. She is 13. Please help! I can't find any camps that sound fun at all!

Answer
If this person is as you say, 13yo & is not going to be with an adult, it would be very likely that she wouldn't be welcome.

if in the company of an adult, i don't see a major problem.

yes, there are a number of camps

What is the wheather like in colorado springs during July?

tlabrueyer

I would like for my family to go camping in colorado springs this year as our family vacation but I dont know if its too hot for a tent or would we be better off getiing a cabin. We are from Louisiana so camping during July in tents are only for the extremest becasue the humidity and heat are unbareable during the summer.

Answer
In Springs in July, yes it would be to hot in a tent.(Try Cascade, Woodland Park or Lake George all close to Springs)

Springs however is right up against the mountains, and temps less than 10 miles from town may be a lot cooler. (don't forget that temperatures can dip down pretty low at night even in July, one year on the 4th of July I was camping in Leadville and it got down to 23F after leaving Pueblo at 103F)

Will Bella start dating edward or jacob?
Will Bella or Edward do anything against the law?
I need the whole scoop!!!!!!!

Answer
MAJOR SPOILER ALERT! (and sorry its very long!)
ok well its a really long story but ill explain it as best i can. at the beginning, edward keeps urging bella to apply for college because that would put off her turning immortal. but bella doesnt want to because she wants to be immortal. but shes kinda afraid because the date for her turning immortal keeps getting closer. one day, bella realizes that when she was at the cullen's house, someone had come into her room and taken her clothes. at first, she figured that it was alice coming to pack her bag for when she had spent the night, so she didnt even asked her since she assumed that. but she later finds out that it was not alice and it was not a scent that edward, jacob, or alice recognized. they were afraid that it had something to do with victoria, but it wasnt her scent. meanwhile in seattle, there is a spree of killings going on which the cullens think is caused by a group of new born vampires out of control. but the cullens wonder why the volturi havent interfered yet. so the cullens and bella figure that the killing spree in seattle and the scent in bella's room have nothing to do with each other. though bella has a feeling that it has something to do with victoria, but the cullens just assumed that it didnt. on the night of graduation, bella was gettting ready in her room and alice came through her window to give her something to wear. at that moment, bella realizes that the two things are connected, the killings in seattle and the person in her room. alice realizes that too when bella tells her and agrees with her. this causes a big problem. so they basically discover over the next couple of weeks that victoria has been creating a ton of newborn vampires to attack the cullens (because she wants to avenge James.) and the newborn vampires are obviously out of control. the cullens call on the denali coven to come down and help them fight against them but they refuse because irina is mad because of the werewolves killing laurent, who had become her mate. so jasper, since he has had experience with new born vampires, trains his family how to deal with them and how to fight to prepare them. bella really doesnt want edward fighting, because she couldnt go and she wouldnt know if anything happened to him, so edward stayed behind with bella and they camped out in a tent. (along with jacob.) they win the fight and kill victoria and all of the other vampires. the volturi finally show up when the fight is over, but since the work was done it wasnt a big deal. edward told aro (since bella was still human and she wasnt supposed to know about vampires) that the date was scheduled for bella to be turned into a vampire so the volturi left them in peace. so thats an overview of kind of the fighting side of the story. heres the overview of the edward and jacob conflict. at first, edward said that bella couldnt hang out with jacob because it wasnt safe to be around werewolves. but eventually- since edward knew that it made bella unhappy to be away from jacob- she let bella hang out with jacob occasionally out at LaPush. one day, edward was driving bella to the treaty line so she could hang out with jacob. bella and jacob went back to his house and jacob said that he wanted to talk to bella. he basically told her that he loved her and the he wanted her to love him. he told her that she had options and that she didnt have to chose edward, that she could chose him. Jacob kissed bella without her permission. at first, she tried to pull away, but he was too strong so she just stood there until he pulled away. she then punched him, which since he is a werewolf and very strong, the punch didnt hurt jacob at all but broke bella's hand. bella was going to call edward to pick her up because she was so mad at jacob but she had left the cell phone in edward's car. so jacob drove her home and edward came and of course was very mad but didnt hurt jacob. so fast forward to the day of the fight, when they were in the tent. edward was already aggrivated with jacob because he had to stay close to bella because he is warm and she was so cold because of the snow. so edward had left for a few minutes and jacob and bella were alone. jacob said that he was going to leave unless bella asked him to kiss her. she didnt want him to get hurt, and so she asked him to kiss her. so she was then torn between edward and jacob because she realized that she was in love with both of them. but she figured out that edward was the one that she couldnt live without. and also, this is kinda a major detail, edward asks bella to marry him, and bella is reluctant to but since it was part of a bet that they made, bella agrees. at first, they just planned to go to vegas for a wedding, but when alice found out she talked bella into letting her do the wedding. the book left off with bella and edward going to tell charlie.

For everyone who has read Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer!?

I need to know major points in the book. Like what where some settings and stuff like that. I've read the book but it's been so long and I'm reading a different book.
Help!

Answer
The book starts off with mysterious killings in Seattle, Edward and the Cullen's suspect they are the work of a newborn vmpire as they are careless in the disposal of the bodies. Bella and Jacob are sending notes to each other about the state of their friendship through Charlie. Jacob is a werewolf, and Bella is dating a vampire, a werewolfs only enemy, making them having any type of friendship a huge problem. It hurts Jacob to have to stay away from Bella, and it hurts Bella even more knowing that it's all because of who she is dating. She can't understand why they can't coexist happily and just get along. Bella sneaks to La Push to see Jacob a few times, and he kisses her and admits he loves her, and he always has, she punches him, and Edward threatens him. Meanwhile the Cullens, and the wolf pack are working to capture Victoria, who is still trying to avenge her mate James' death. On graduation day Bella has a revelation that it is Victoria making the newborns and she plans to use them as distraction so she can get to Bella.
Alice and Jacob have a discussion and decide it is best to work together in this impending battle. Jasper teaches the werewolves about how the newborns will fight, he helped raise an army of them in his past so he knows all about them. The Cullens and the wolves actually get along pretty well. The day of the battle comes and Bella and Edward set up camp miles away from where the fight will take place, Jacob is their connection to the fight. [The wolves can hear one anothers thoughts when in wolf form.] Jacob over-hears Edward and Bella discussing their plans to get married, and runs off howling in pain. Bella is very upset, this may be the last time she sees him, so Edward goes to find Jacob so Bella can speak with him. Jacob claims that since she doesnt care about him, he will just let the newborns take him out, and Bella kisses him.. During this kiss she realizes she returns Jacob's love. She doesn't love him as strongly as she does Edward, but she does love him. He goes off to battle and Bella discusted with herself, starts crying because she feels like she betrayed Edward. He explain to her that Jacob was lying about letting the newborns take him out just so he could get her to kiss him. Before you even realize what has happened the tent is being ripped to shreads and Bella sees Victoria standing there, with a male vampire. Edward and Voctoria begin to fight, and Seth Clearwater, who came to replace Jacob fights with the male. Edward and Victoria fight for what seems like a long time, and Bella sees that someone is loosing badly, but cannot tell who it is, vmpires move very fast, and are nearly indestructable. Edward wins the fight, and so does Seth. They go to the clearing where the battle was going on to see how the rest of the Cullens, and the werewolves faired, and they defeated all of the newborns with no problem, but Jacob got hurt badly trying to be a hero. The every bone in the entire right side of his body is completely broken, but werewolves heal quickly so it isn't a huge deal. The book closes with Bella going to La Push to see Jacob. He left her on the mointian with the impression that they were going to be together, he didn't understand that when she kissed him back it was mearly to keep him alive, not a proclamation of love. She has to break his heart, and Jacob accepts it, he states that it doesn't mean he is giving up though.

Where is a great tent campsite in yellowstone?

SailBeyond

Me and my friends are going on a camping trip up to Yellowstone National Park. We plan on tent camping. The will be between 8-10 of us going. We need to find somewhere they have a group rate that is cheap or we would just like somewhere to dry camp. We plan on leaving the first week of August.

Answer
I suggest that you do a Yellowstone National Park drive-through during a day and go dispersed camping or primitive developed camping in an adjacent National Forest or Grand Teton National Park. August is a busy and hot time to camp in Yellowstone National Park.

Look at Shoshone National Forest, Gallatin National Forest, Targhee National Forest, Custer National Forest as a few alternatives.

How many people fit in a 10x10 tent?

<3

My boss let me borrow a 10x10 tent for my camping trip this weekend. I have no idea how big/tall it is. I was just wondering how many people will fit in it with a full size blow up bed.

Answer
Tents are advertised as two man, four man, six man and so on. However, at best this is the maximum number of persons you can cram into the tent for sleeping in close company with no personal gear. This rating method might make sense for backpackers who are traveling light, but it is terrible for all others.

Why be cramped? Divide the advertised rating by two, and you will have the real capacity of the tent. Therefore, most four man tents are really only comfortable for two adults, or perhaps two adults and two very small children.

You should plan a minimum of 30 square feet of floor space per person. Make this even higher for longer camping trips, unless reducing weight is important.

Actual length and width are also very important. If you are six feet tall, you will need a space of at least seven feet in order to stretch out and not be crammed against the tent sides. You will need at least two and one half feet in width just for sleeping. This equals only 17.5 square feet. A "two man" tent might be advertised which measures five by seven feet.

Adding space for clothing, and a space to stand up without walking on your tentmate, will result in a more livable situation. Think more like eight by eight feet as a basic two man family camping tent. This gives you 32 square feet per person. Still not overly generous.

A ten by ten foot tent is ideal for two adults. You will have enough space for cots or a double air mattress, plus space to stand up when changing clothes.

Kids can fit comfortably in smaller tents. Once they are old enough, about seven or eight, they will probably want to sleep in a separate tent anyway. Parents will appreciate the privacy provided by this arrangement too. A five by seven foot tent is adequate for young kind. Teenagers should be considered as adults when fitting a tent.

Be cautious about tents that are larger than ten by ten. You will find three problems. First, it will be much more difficult to find a smooth and level spot large enough to set up the tent on. You need a spot as level as possible. Second, big tents can get heavy. This is not a problem for your car, but think about how much work it might be for you in loading and unloading the car. Finally, do you really want everyone to sleep, and dress, in the same tent. Privacy becomes an issue with the bigger tents.

The peak inside height is very important to you comfort. For most trips, try to have a tent that is tall enough to stand in. Plan for the taller persons in your group. A six or seven foot peak height is necessary for adults, and a four foot peak is about right for kids. Remember, the tent slopes downward at a sharp angle, so the actual spot where you can stand up will be small. Larger spaces will be provided in tents with taller peaks.

I am looking for a campsite not too far from the Bay Area, like 2.5 hours max. I am 22 and planning on going up with a group of friends (6 of us) and I am looking for a campsite that is low on cost, and one where we won't get in trouble for making a little (really just a little!) noise past curfew. We are not loud, rude or abrasive, we just may not want to go to bed at 10pm. Thank you in advance!

Answer
Bay Area camping
(links to pages for parks with hiking, or nearby)

North Bay (Marin, Sonoma, and Napa Counties)
⢠Angel Island. Hike-in campsites. (For descriptions, go to the Angel Island website)
⢠Austin Creek State Recreation Area. Tent and backcountry campsites.
⢠Bothe-Napa Valley State Park. Tent and RV campsites.
⢠China Camp State Park. Walk-in campsites.
⢠Doran Regional Park. RV and tent campsites. Since this park is situated on an exposed, sandy spit on the south side of Bodega Harbor, there's not much privacy.
⢠Marin Headlands (GGNRA). Walk-in and group campsites. (For descriptions go to the GGNRA camping page)
⢠Mount Tamalpais State Park. Walk-in campsites at Pantoll and cabins at Steep Ravine Environmental Campsites. The Pantoll sites are well-shaded, but uncomfortably close to both Panoramic Highway and the Pantoll parking lot.
⢠Point Reyes National Seashore. Hike-in campsites. (For descriptions go to the Point Reyes camping page)
⢠Samuel P. Taylor State Park. Tent and RV campsites.

East Bay (Alameda and Contra Costa Counties)
⢠Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Tent and RV campsites.
⢠Del Valle Regional Park. Tent, RV, and youth group campsites.
⢠Mount Diablo State Park. Tent and RV campsites.
⢠Sunol Regional Wilderness. Tent and group campsites.

South Bay (San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties)
⢠Big Basin State Park. Tent, walk-in, and RV campsites, and tent cabins.
⢠Butano State Park. Tent and RV campsites.
⢠Castle Rock State Park. Hike-in campsites.
⢠Half Moon Bay State Beach. Tent and RV campsites, on a bluff just above the ocean.
⢠Henry W. Coe State Park. Tent and RV campsites, plus backcounty camping.
⢠Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. Tent and RV campsites.
⢠Grant County Park. Tent, RV, and youth group campsites.
⢠Sam McDonald County Park. Youth group campsites and horse camp.
⢠Memorial County Park. Tent, RV, and group campsites.

Camping and Backpacking the San Francisco Bay Area, by Matt Heid (order this book from Amazon.com). All bay area camping and backpacking destinations are described in this book, which includes park maps for the car and hike-in campgrounds, and trail maps for the backpacking excursions. General trail info helps in planning hikes. I do wish Heid's book encompassed coastal Sonoma County campgrounds like Pomo Canyon and Bodega Dunes, and there are no campgrounds maps, a feature I really miss. Despite those quibbles, this is a great guide for bay area campers who love to hike.

⢠California Camping, by Tom Stienstra (order this book from Amazon.com). I refer to this book constantly when planning camping adventures in the state, and find it best used to obtain campground specifics and a general feeling for a place. My problem with the book is that I have a hard time following the driving directions. As an example, when driving to Letts Lake, in the Mendocino National Forest, the directions refer to a series of junctions, and instruct the reader to turn right or left, without ever mentioning the names of the roads. For me, this is the book's biggest shortcoming; it may be impossible to include more detailed driving directions, since each campground profile has a limited amount of space. In any case, for campgrounds way in the middle of nowhere, I always supplement this book's driving directions with either AAA or National Forest maps.

What are fun things to do with Chinese exchange students?

hallie

My family is hosting two chinese students this summer. My teacher (who is running the program) has asked me to think of some fun things to do with all the students and some field trips to go on and i'm stuck on what to do! Any Ideas?

Answer
Neat.

* Family get together (when's the next time Grandma going to get a chance to meet real Chinese people, as opposed to just hearing about them on TV?)
* Local sporting event (baseball, basketball, hockey...)
* Local carnivals or festivals
* Local landmarks / sightseeing
* State fair
* Farmer's market
* Local history/cultural museums
* Zoo / Aquarium
* Amusement park
* 4th of July celebration w/fireworks
* Outdoor picnic / BBQ
* Outlet mall
* Go to a "Chinese" restaurant
* Go to an authentic Chinese restaurant
* Go to a local famous restaurant - anything that isn't in China
* If they wish to show you how to cook a Chinese dish, try going to a Chinese grocery store
* Political rally for Obama or Romney or other local politician

In general, anything that is unique to America, or even better, to your city or area. If they're from a big city, take them into the wilderness or to a farm. If they like the outdoors, go on an overnight camping trip somewhere - even if it's just setting up the tent in your backyard.

Having them meet as many different people as possible is also a good idea. That's why I listed Family Get Together. Could be something informal, or a reunion, or even your 3rd cousin's wedding. The idea is to show them what real life Americans are like - not the ones they only see on TV or in movies.

Anything that is important to you is a good idea. If your family goes to church on Sunday - they're going. You or sibling is on the little league team? They're going to a game. Sunday dinner with Grandma? Yeah they're going.

At the same time, give them a chance to share their culture with you as well. If you have a Chinese restaurant that serves authentic Chinese food and not just stuff like General Tso's Chicken (which I guarantee they've never had before) going there will not only give them a comforting taste of home but also show you what their life in China is like.

Family Vacation: what's the cheapest accomodations during travel?

Nadia

We haven't been on a family vacation in a long time. We will be "on the road" probably a good 10-12 days with our 21 year old son and teen daughters this July and we need ideas for affordable accomodation. We have friends scattered about but my husband wants this to be a vacation, with a capital V.

We cannot use our current vehicles because they are older and not reliable so we will be spending a little on a rental. We will be travelling down the East Coast (from Canada) to Florida across to Mississippi for a family reunion and then back up north through Tennessee and Ohio.

Does anybody have any creative ideas? I've checked the prices of motorhomes for rent (that's out of the question!). We can't really afford a camper rental either PLUS a van rental. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Answer
Check the rout your taking then look into campgrounds that are more or less on the way. Just take a tent and some sleeping bags and you can overnight at a campground with facilities for just dollars a night. Take a camp stove and some basic groceries to make dinner there and you'll save further. It's not luxurious but it's definitely economical.

Where are some great campgrounds in Michigan?

Adam

My friends and I just finished our first year of college and I want to get everyone together and go camping for a long weekend sometime this summer. I am looking for a place with a pond or lake or some kind of water to swim in and possibly even canoe some place close by. It would be great if it was more secluded so we wouldn't be disturbing anyone if we are loud but that is not a necessity. Thanks for your help!

Answer
I'm going to have to suggest Rifle River Recreation Area campground. My family has a cottage in Rose city, about six miles from there, so I've been going to the park my entire life. It's a fantastic place. It is in Lupton about three to four hours north of Detroit. The park is beautiful and has plenty of beaches and water access as well as a few look outs around the park. Just so you know I'd suggest Devoe beach for swimming, its very clean (the cleanest in the park), less populated and you have a large designated area to swim in and it is hardly every extremely busy (especially if you go during dinner time). This is where we always swim.
They have all kinds of camping from campers to tents to rustic cabins that you can rent. The cabins are a lot of fun and make it easier than lugging around a tent. There is a good chance that you can be as loud as you want as the park is not often overly packed, if you have a problem being quiet at your campsite there are plenty of pick nick tables and look out area's with campfires to go hang out at around the park where nobody would here you.
PLUS literally right across from the park entrance is a canoe, kayak and tube renting area (as well as a small convenience store). You can go there to rent a canoe and than they will bring it directly into the park for you and drop it off at Davoe beach, you just meet them at the docking station. I've done it plenty of times and it is beautiful and lots of fun!! Davoe is huge so there's plenty of area to canoe, as well as smaller creeks to go down, and an island in the middle of the lake that you might want to stop and have lunch at. One of the best parts is paddling back in to the beach area and just jumping directly into the lake from your canoe!

In the park there's the "fireman's" look out which is a wooden tower that looks out over all the lakes as well as the "baby mac" which is a small swinging bridge over one of the bigger rivers. The park is huge so there's plenty of little places to visit and lots of hiking.
I'm assuming you're going to have easy use of a car, you can get a campground close to Davoe that is with in walking distance (we still drive usually lol there's plenty of parking and after a day at the beach we never really want to walk back) but the park is very large so I suggest taking the car to explore.
Also the Rifle River is pretty close so if you'd prefer to tube instead of canoe its very fun, you can rent a tube and they drop you off on the river and pick you up.
I know its not in way southern Michigan but you don't have to worry about it not being rural. There isn't much but forest in this area. However, six miles away is Rose City, a small town with a grocery store and some fast food places (including a DQ) and about twenty minutes away is West Branch if you want to go into a bigger town for bowling or for a Walmart.
Its a super nice place! I go there at least four times a year. If you have any questions or anything I might be able to help you with feel free to message me!

Great places for a 3 day backpacking trip in Northern Michigan?

Kyle

A few friends and I are looking to set up a backpacking trip for this late spring/summer time.
We want to be able to tent out (without public camp sites.) Also would like it to be a few days trip.
Any ideas on where some good places are?
Northern Mchigan/UP but not too far west in the UP please.

Answer
Porcupine Mountains State Park. Hiawatha National Forest.

North Country National Scenic Trail, 83 miles.

From its point of entry near Ironwood, the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) soon enters Ottawa National Forest and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Rivers, waterfalls, forested hills and ridges characterize the trail. Laughing Whitefish Falls and Rock River Falls and Canyon provide outstanding scenery as the trail continues eastward to Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The 40-mile Lakeshore Trail along the rock bluffs and sandy shore of Lake Superior provides outstanding vistas as well as primitive camping and hiking experiences. The trail continues eastward along the lake to Muskallonge State Park before turning south to Tahquamenon Falls State Park, where the second largest waterfall east of the Mississippi River and many smaller falls await the hiker. South of the park, the trail passes through Hiawatha National Forest on its way to Father Marquette National Memorial at the Straits of Mackinac. Trail users will find a side trip to Mackinac Island enjoyable.

Hey, I'm going with a few friends, they have a boat, everything is pretty much set up, it will be a couple days out there, camping in tents, but I have a few Qs...

First off, I don't own sunglasses right now, I just lost my job(and getting one soon, but not soon enough), and my parents don't have a dime. Is this absolutely vital that I have sunglasses? Or can I live without them?

Secondly, I only own a pair of leather shoes, and I don't really want to buy a pair of $1 sandals because I'd rather go barefoot, but is there anything real cheap at walmart? And could I go barefoot at LP?

Thirdly, I don't have any sunscreen... And if it's more then $2 I won't be able to buy it, I know I'll look like a crab when I get back, and it'll sting like a ************ but will it kill me to not have it?

Also I would like to know a few things that come to mind if you want to share them.

Anyway, thanks to those who answer.

Answer
Short term, not wearing sunglasses won't make you go blind or give you cataracts though years of going without them could. Being on the water will really make you wish you had a pair. Ask your friends if you can borrow a pair.

Barefoot is better but you may find the ground gets too hot and some restaurants still cling to the myth that there are health laws against bare feet. There aren't any such laws. You may want to go ahead and spend that $1 for a cheap pair of flip-flops that will be more than durable enough to last a week at Powell.

Sunscreen is a good idea if you plan to be outside long enough to burn and you don 't have a decent tan already. Odds are, your friends will have some and it seems pretty much a ritual now for somebody to pull out their sunscreen and offer some to everyone else. You can probably mooch that off your friends without anyone thinking anything of it.

Go have a good time.

Answer
Forget the shoes and the sunglasses. Just make sure you have a really lightweight long sleeve shirt to put on if you feel you've had too much time in the sun.
Get a good tan first, though, and you won't need to worry as a good tan really does protect you against the sun. Do the same for the soles of your feet. Get them used to going barefoot gradually in the days before you go. If you have a few weeks yet to get you body nicely tanned and your bare soles nicely toughened up you'll be just fine. Enjoy.

I got tent and sprayed with waterproofing. Used it yesterday during the rain and had to put a tarp over it to keep the water from seeping through the top. So I'm looking for a new one thats really rain proof, any suggestions?

Answer
A self-supporting tent (like a dome tent) with a full rainfly should keep you relatively dry. I have a Eureka Aspen, a Eureka Apex, and a Big Agnes Seedhouse 3. I NEVER get wet. The Aspen is my primary tent. It has seen hailstorms in the Rockies, torrential downpours in the Adirondacks, and wet sloppy snow in Vermont.

Taped seams are the best, but you can always get seam sealer at the camping supply store closest to you. If you are buying your camping gear at Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Sears, etc...expect to get something less than quality. Go to a REAL gear store and look at the tents. Eureka tents are the best tents if you have a tight budget. You can pick up an Apex at Campmor for about $89. A good MountainHardwear or Marmot tent will set you back a couple hundred bucks.

Also...these are all lighter backpacking style tents. If you are looking for something that you can set a cot and chairs in, then you are really going to pay big bucks for a good tent. A Kelty Trail Dome 6 person tent goes for about $350 (I think) and better tents are more expensive than that. You can pick up a 6 person cabin tent at K-Mart for $150...and you will get wet.

Make sure your tent is tight. That is what keeps the tent from dripping. Use a groundcloth. I put mine inside the tent, some people put it under the tent or they use a pre-fab footprint to keep the groundwater and condensation out.

Also...one drip doesn't mean the tent is leaking. Condensation can easily build on the inside of the tent. If the temperature and dew point are equal, count on water clinging to the ceiling. Chances are it will drip on you. All of my tents have a roof screen. Moisture travels out through the screen and condenses on the fly. When it runs down the fly, it lands OUTSIDE my tent. If my tent had a solid ceiling it would roll down the INSIDE of my tent and I would get wet.

Also...follow all of the other advise already posted. It's all pretty helpful.

Where to do tent camping in Vermont at this time of year?

What all do I need for a camping trip?

tents for camping ll bean image

nerdie

This weekend I'm going camping with some friends. We all are in our early mid 20's and we haven't really gone camping on our own. What all do i need to bring. I already have a tent, sleeping bag, cooler, first aid kit. hot dogs, bbq, beer. and all that good stuff. But besides the main stuff what should I bring, and like what to do when were are not hiking or on the lake.

Answer
Plastic Dish Pan This keeps stuff from rolling all over in the trunk and comes in handy for dish washing and bathing.
Paper Plates Twice as many as you think you need. Bring plenty, they burn very well for fire starting purposes.
Can Opener
Cup-O-Noodles
Granola Bars
Silverware 2x everyone in your party. Bring some regular silverware and some plastic stuff.
Napkins or Paper Towels
Toothpicks
Coffee (Sugar / Cream) The makings for a good cup of coffee. Also, single serving coffee bags or tea bags
Beef Stew
Corned Beef Hash Great with eggs!
Canned Pie Filling Excellent!
Ravioli Even good cold and kids love it!
Macaroni and Cheese Very soupy but tasty.
Baked Beans
Soups Pick the stuff your family likes best.
Canned Vegetables Green beans, peas, mushrooms, corn, carrots, etc.
Canned Fruits Pineapple, applesauce, peaches, pears, apricots, etc.
Bread Bring a good loaf of bread.
Cheese Cheddar or mozzarella
Sandwich Meat
Butter
Condiments Almost all condiments will keep well - Just make them easy to get to.
Adult Beverages
Kids Drinks
Hot Dogs Excellent food.
Box of Cereal Cherrios, Chex's, any cereal that requires no sugar. Eat this out of a cup. It's a quick and easy breakfast.
S'more Fixings Marshmallows, Hershey chocolate bars, and graham crackers!
Zip-Lock Storage Bags Really handy if you hate seeing your butter floating around in the bottom of the cooler.
Aluminum Foil
Spatula
Cooking Utensils A serving spoon, a pitch fork, a pair of tongs, and a good knife.
Hot Pads
Clothes Pin
Frying Pan I use an old cast iron pan.

Car / Glove Box
Car Registration
Car Insurance Information
Medical Insurance Bring everyone's cards; better safe than sorry.
Travelers Check Receipts
Camera and Film Many cameras take strange batteries - bring a spare!
Bring a Book If you read, bring something. You never know where you'll be waiting.
Your Wallet
Your Drivers License Obvious, but please make sure!
Your AAA Card If you don't have one, I recommend you get one. Free tows in the U.S.A. are only the beginning. Your policy may say they only tow 7 miles - but that's not the full truth. AAA will tow you seven miles in town.
Your Checkbook Most self-service campgrounds accept checks.
Your Credit Cards and ATM Cards Yes, I have left my VISA at home accidentally- the only time I have needed it.
Money Don't bring hundreds please!
Water I use a large container for the bulk of the water and keep a soda bottle with water in reach for drinking in the car or on hikes.
Maps
Toys Let your kids pick out what they want.
Snacks Good distractions for the little ones.
Towels I use them as seat covers to protect from accidents for easy packing.

Clothing

Good Hat
Rain Poncho
Bug Head Net
Multi-Pocket Vest A great piece of apparel. Keeps all your little items handy.
Sport Sandals
Long Underwear
Filp-Flops Great for showering in as well as lake swimming

New tent? Practice setting it up in the backyard before going on a trip.
Invest in good sleeping equipment. Choose air mattresses, cots, or sleeping bags that will give you adequate rest so you can get the most out of your daytime activities.
Stay dry:
Use a ground cloth under your tent as protection from rips and moisture.
Use the rain fly, even if the sky looks clear.
To prevent rain from leaking into your tent, apply a seam sealant to the inside and outside of all exposed tent seams.
Keep your tent clean:
A whisk broom is handy for sweeping out dirt and leaves.
Place an indoor/outdoor rug in front of your tent entrance for dirty shoes.
Bring duct tape for quick repairs of small tears, splintered tent poles and the like.

Kamping Kabins, Kottages and Lodges
Our Kamping Kabins, Kottages and Lodges provide space, comfort and privacy for family fun. Even on cool, wet days, you can stretch out and relax with games, crafts or a good book, and enjoy the sound of rain pattering on the roof as you stay warm and dry. In addition to our basic camping checklist, here are some tips for campers staying in KOA Kabins, Kottages or Lodges:

We provide beds, but you'll still need to bring bedding (sleeping bags or linens, and pillows).
Don't forget bath towels and personal items.
Cookware and utensils are provided at some locations, so be sure to check with the campground before you pack. Otherwise, plan on bringing your own.
For fun on rainy days and lamp-lit evenings, consider packing puzzles, cards and board games inside zippered bags for spill-proof transporting.

Any Tips About Camping With A 2 Year Old?

echoedmemo

We're going camping this weekend with our 2 year old and we need suggestions about:

Sleeping arrangements (we're only using 1 tent)
Things to keep her occupied
Items to buy that would come in handy
Food that she'll eat that doesn't require a microwave

ANYTHING and everything you can tell me that would be of help, I would really appreciate!!
We're kinda scared about the trip with her!!

Answer
hi there.
You and your daughter are going to have a great time!

we took our son camping when he was 2, and he loved it.
we went to Newquay, and it was fantastic!

Food - take stuff you know she likes. i took things like cous cous, baked beans, bread, soups etc.

To keep her occupied: many children find that camping is enough to keep them occupied! If you are camping in a field, take some books that show all kinds of wildlife that you are likely to find, and then you can hunt fr animals!
also tak ecolouring books etc.

Items to buy:Just anything you may need eg:camping stove etc.

Also check out whats available to the kids in the area you are going to, for example i took my son to Newquay, and spent a day at Newquay Zoo, he had a great day!!

Where are some good primitive camping sites on the brazos river?

best tent camping locations image

abbi

Im wanting to go tent camping on the brazos river, tx, but am having a hard time finding very many places to do this. I read on a couple sites that there are some private camp areas but can't find any online information about them. I would like to find a spot that there won't be people right next to you, and is close to good swimming areas of the water. Any suggestions? Please only answer if you've been to the brazos and have experience on the river.

Answer
I know of a Girl Scout camp that has some primitive camping property very near the Brazos. You may call the council and see if they will let unregistered Girl Scout adults camp on their land. Or you can call Rhodes Canoe rental. They have a location right at Hwy 67 and the Brazos. They may know of some place in the area you want. Rhodes rents inner tubes for floating down the river. I would think they would be a good resource. Call 254-897-4214 for Rhodes Rental

Is there tent camping with showers near Padre Island?

sierragirl

I want to tent camp but still be able to take a shower when we stay in or near Padre Island this summer. I can't find anything online except for the state part & KOA is for RVs only in that location. I'd also like to be able to make a campfire but the shower is most important! LOL I am camping with 3 kids and we don't really want to go to bed with sand stuck in our rears for a week-lol. Any suggestions?

Answer
My perfered place when I'm in the area is: American Marine at Dubuque Yacht Basin & RV park right downtown. Their phone #(563) 556-7708. Farther out of town is a nice Corps of Engineers park Called Grant River COE Lock & Dam 11 only 10 miles up river, in Wisconson

I camp in a self contained motorhome so lack of facilities doesn't bother me.

Mud Lake is cool, I just like it all or nothing. Mines of Spain Recreation Area might have camping, but I'm not too sure about along the river.

North of town is also Finleys Landing, a small park for mostly tent camping. They are right on the river with a boat ramp, dock and marina. Their phone #(563) 556-6745.

Happy camping.

Where can I camp away from it all?

Addi S

Hi, I live in Omaha Nebraska. A few old friends and I were looking forward to going camping. We want a real camping experience, not one of those canvas suburbia campgrounds, but one where we can be nearly alone (I don't mind a few friendly neighbors). Basically, I am looking for a site with no real established campgrounds. My friends have experienced this out of state (very far out of state) and we wanted to do it again. I, however am fairly new to camping and have somehow been put in charge of finding a campsite. There are a few good areas in Iowa that are Nature Refuges, but I can't find whether or not it would be illegal to camp there. So if you have any ideas about the general laws, good places to camp in my area (you know, without the overcrowded sites), or even just how to find out where to camp like this, all answers are appreciated.
I would be willing to travel 45-60 min from Omaha (at the most).

Answer
In Nebraska, many state wildlife areas permit dispersed free camping (camping outside a campground). State parks do not allow dispersed camping. Iowa isn't a lot of help, they don't allow much dispersd camping. For example, 10 miles from my place is the Medicine Creek State Wildlife Management Area. Another idea is the Nebraska National Forest. There are free dispersed campsites available in the Halsey and Chadron areas. The closer you are to the Omaha/Lincoln area, the fewer opportunities. Take a look at this website for ideas... http://www.rv-camping.org/Nebraska.html. Though the site is geared for RVers, finding tent spots is even easier and the rules are generally the same.

Where are good places to camp within driving distance of Akron, Ohio?

I'm looking for some good campgrounds within 1 - 5 hours distance from Akron or Northeast, Ohio in general. I do not want to camp in the kinds of places where you are right next to other campers and hillbillies drinking beer or screaming kids, I'm looking for the kind of place that offers some isolation and privacy.

Thanks

Answer
What do you mean by "isolation and privacy?" Do you mean you don't want to see other tents or campers? Does it mean you don't want showers of bathrooms? Does it mean that you don't want electricity? If so, you'll probably have to do some hiking during the weekdays to find a walk-in, rustic site that isn't busy.

Mohican State Park and Memorial Forest near Mansfield may offer one of the easiest shots at what you're seeking.

http://backpackohio.com/mohican.html

Pennsylvania state parks in the Allegheny foothills are great for this purpose (see the "Pennsylvania Wilds" region at the link below), according to my backpacking friends.

http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/recreation/camping.aspx#cam15

Allegheny National Forest is particularly popular with backpackers as some primitive campgrounds are so remote that reservations aren't even accepted. Much of the National Forest, with certain restrictions, is available for camping, and it's beautiful.

http://naturetourism.allegheny.edu/hiking.html

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/allegheny/recreation/camping/

http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/allegheny/recreation/

Primitive camping also is available in much of Ohio's Wayne National Forest, including the northwest unit in Ohio's popular and beautiful Hocking Hills, southeast of Columbus.

http://www.athensohio.com/whattodo/index.php?page=81&item=489

If you're not into primitive camping and want the amenities, but just don't want to be crammed into a standard campground, consider Bissell's just north of Niagara Falls, Ontario. This place is a special hit with kids, plus you have the nearby attractions of Niagara Falls. I haven't been there in over a decade, and now I believe you'll need U.S. passports.... When we were there, we could see other campers, but we were scores of feet away from them, perhaps because they weren't busy and we asked for privacy. Their one acre pool is more akin to a pond and swimming safety must be emphasized, especially if you allow kids into anything besides the kiddie pool.

http://www.bissellshideaway.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=32

During weekdays, you might have lots of privacy in primitive campgrounds in some Ohio state parks. My hunch is that this may be the case at Malabar Farm State Park, near Mohican State Park, and not known for its small campground and overshadowed by neighboring Mohican. Call the park and ask!

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/malabar/tabid/762/Default.aspx

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/locatormap/tabid/726/Default.aspx

Consider getting a copy of the AAA Campground Guide.

What are the best places in the Eastern U.S. to backpack or hike for multiple days?

best tent camping ky on Golf Courses Near Turnabout Camp and Boat Club, Kentucky:
best tent camping ky image

k-y

See me and a couple of friends want to go backpacking in the woods, away from society, and see some pretty sites along the way. We want to enjoy it so I was looking more for a multiple day trip. Also, we would like to stay around Ky, Tn, Nc, Sc, Va, and some surrounding states. We want to camp but not the modern kind where you stay in a log cabin or even pay to stay somewhere, we want to just pitch a tent sorta thing.

Answer
How about the Appalachian Trail, it starts in I believe Tennessee, and ends in Maine.
It has "shelters" every so often that are actually 3 sides of a cabin with the front wide open..they also have a wood floor. There are no bathroom's in them but usually there is one near by, they are also usually near water of some kind..lake..stream and are on a first come first serve basis.

Where is it acceptable to set up a tent when traveling?

best tent camping fl on The Best Tent Campgrounds in Florida | Trails.com
best tent camping fl image

Suddenly

I am planning on taking some bare essentials and riding my motorcycle from NY to FL this spring. This will be a 1 way trip, I plan on finding a cheap apartment down there somewhere and any job until I get on my feet. I am of course saving money for the apartment and such so I will have something to get me off my feet. However, I do not want to spend money on hotels/motels on the way down, and would prefer a bit of an adventure rather than the touristy way of traveling. I have no problem riding in the rain, sleeping outside, eating cheap food, and traveling light. I am fully mentally prepared as well as physically able.

The problem I'm facing is I don't know where acceptable places are to just stop my bike and set up a tent. It seems everything costs money these days, you need reservations, there are long lists of rules and guidelines, etc. I really dislike these things. Where are the best places to just set up a tent for the night?

Answer
Yeah, good luck on that. There's so many laws and restrictions on camping around, it'll make your head swim. Everyone's concerned about liabilities, bums, vagrants, honestly homeless, or just plain crazy.

There are alternatives. It's called hobo, or "boondog" camping, and you'll need to do your research. There are some smaller towns, and villages that offer one or two nights free camping in the city park. Some churches or civic groups allow this on their property. Some farmers will allow a tent down, if you can arrange it. Maybe you have to trade some work for some rest. Barter and good manners always helps.

Call ahead. Go on CL, place an advert about your route and approx. times, asking if there are folks willing to put up with a Traveler. Then decide if you have the trust and fortitude to do this.

See if you can't view episodes from that TV show "Then Came Bronson". Then go watch "Easy Rider".

Best!
