my friends and i are planning a road trip for next summer coming from NY to CA and we'd like tips and advice from experienced travelers. Things like, how much money should we bring? what's a good route? is a tent a good idea? what are the best places (cheap) to stay? any really nice places to check out? best car for a road trip? none of us have ever done a road trip so any help would be appreciated!

thanks!

ps my friends are 18, 18 and 16. i dont no if that helps or not...

Answer
Check out http://www.hostels.com/ for cheap places to stay. Camping gear's a good idea. You can check out the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) websites in each state for places to camp along the way. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a national DNR website where you can get campsite information.

I'd recommend bringing as much money as you can, but don't tell anyone you have it. Things come up (car problems, for example), and it's better to have the money and not need it than vice versa. But, be smart. Don't spend it unless you need to, keep it in several different places in case one of your bags gets stolen, etc. If word gets out that you have a decent amount of cash on you (or access to it via a debit card), you're more susceptible to robbery, or just plain mooching.

As far as what to see, that depends mostly on your interests. Personally, I really like the outdoors and do a lot of hiking. If you're of the same mind, you might like traveling through Wisconsin and Minnesota. I got off the interstate for a while on a trip from Indiana to Minneapolis and drove along the Mississippi river between Wisconsin and Iowa. It was a beautiful drive. You could go to Chicago, check out some of the sights (Field Museum, Chicago Art Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Sears Tower, John Hancock Building), then cut over to Dubuque, Iowa, and then head north from there. While in Minneapolis, stop by the Mall of America. Then head west into South Dakota, see Mt. Rushmore and the Badlands National Park.

Anyway, there's a few ideas to get you started. Have fun, and above all, be safe. BTW, one of your friends is 16? How does his/her parents feel about this?

boundary waters permit and launch point?

NolanW

I'm trying to plan a trip to the boundary waters soon, June 5 and 6. I'm only 18, and would like to know what needs to be done. I'm not a state resident (Iowan), and don't have any passes or licenses. It sounds like there's a lot of red tape to get through. How can I get these passes? Also, I would like to canoe through it. I dont have one yet, but figure I can buy one in minnesota that's registered. I have some reasonable experience with canoes. I've also read about multiple launch points, and that some fill up months before. Are there any that are relatively unpopular points that would still be open to reservation? What basics will I need to bring? I'm going with another 18 year old, and one 17 year old.

Answer
The Minnesota DNR website is the place to get permits. You'll need to know your entry point at that time, as the permit only allows access at that point. At this time though, you shouldn't have too hard of a time at any particular point.

You'll want to pack light. Do you have any Duluth packs? They're essentially big waterproof bags to keep your items and food in. They are very necessary. You'll need some kind of water purifier so you don't get sick. Maps and a compass obviously. Freeze dried foods are the best option for dinners. Bear Creek soups also make for a great dinner. There's plenty of fish for the catching. We mostly caught small mouth bass. Tent(s) and sleeping bags, as light as possible.

You'll probably have to drive up to Ely and stay the night there, especially coming from Iowa. I went from the Twin Cities and it was still very necessary.. Then get up and early in the morning and head out. You'll want as much day time as possible to canoe out and find a campsite.

I had a guide when up there. Luckily for us, we knew one so she took us out for free. I'd stop at an outrigger in Ely and get some information as possible attractions within the wilderness. While you're there, you can take day trips to different areas or just go and camp at a different area. Remember though, you must exist through the same entry point.

It's tough work. If you're a beginner or novice, I'd suggest trying to find a path with short and easy portages. You'll be doing plenty of it. There's bears, moose, wolves and other wildlife so be smart. And don't accidentally venture to Canada. There are permits for both the BWCA and Canada's Quetico that allows you to go between the two though.

Anybody know a good camping spot near banff/ Calgary AB?

We are looking for a good spot to go camping in the woods in tents. we do not want a family campground but something more "friday the 13th" style?

Answer
You can pack into the backpacking trail along 30 mile creek trailhead that starts at a parking lot outside Banff near the downhill ski lifts of Mount Norquay.

Don't quite know what you mean by "Friday the 13th" style but if you are looking for danger, that valley is grizzly bear territory. Last time I backpacked there we found bear scat and trees that had been clawed 8 feet above the ground. And when we got back to our van after 5 days in the backcountry, the guy parked next to us had his car door ripped off by a bear who broke in to get a bag of food he had left inside. That should add a thrill to the outing for you.

The campground at Lake Minnewanka outside Banff is cool -- near the lake, trails for mountain biking, secluded tent sites in the trees but also concrete bathrooms and covered cooking huts with picnic tables and grills. No big RV's or screaming brats. One thing about camping in the Canadian Rockies is you can pretty much count on rain or snow any time you go out so having a place to get out of the occasional rain is a plus.

You could also check out the Climbers Campground across from the Athabasca Glacier tongue along the Icefields Parkway. Had some good times there in my crazy youth. Watch out for the drunken demented climbers with their ice axes.:-)

I've hiked in Kananaskis (near Canmore) but never camped out there -- there are likely some good secluded campsites in that area. The 1997 movie "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins was filmed there in Kananaskis (it was supposed to look like Alaska). Rent the movie if you want to see what that area looks like. Of course, there's that scary grizzly in that one too.........

Have fun! And bring lots of bandaids...............

How to fix the camping tent poles?

Nadine

I am planning to go camping with my friends but I found two of my camping tent poles are broken. Any one knows how to fix it?

Answer
1.Go to a sporting goods store and look for tent pole repair sleeves. Buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles (hopefully it's only one).

2.Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

3.Go to a hardware store if you aren't able to find a tent repair sleeve that will work with your tent pole.

4.Buy some aluminum roof flashing and two nylon clamps. Cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole.

5.Secure it in place by putting clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created. Wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

I want to surprise my boyfriend for his birthday by planning a trip for us. I was thinking anywhere from a roundtrip Mexican cruise to a quiet in-cabin camping trip by a lake. We both live in Southern California area so it would be great if it were around there.

Also, any romantic/themed hotel suggestions would be awesome.

We're both college students, too, so I'm hoping to keep this fairly cheap. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

Answer
I think camping would be pretty cheap and can be romantic. Oh, I see now you are talking about having a cabin... that will up the price a bit. If you are tent camping, it can be as little as $10 a night. And there are lots of beautiful places in California to stay.

If you were to cruise to Mexico, I'm not sure what the cost would be. From Galveston to Mexico, a 5-day cruise and be as little as $300 per person.

Free California Campground? PLEASE 5 POINTS!?

David Boss

I am heading on a camping trip from Southern California and i'm looking for a free campground or up to 10 dollars a night that also has electrical outlets by the camping tent area. Any help would be appreciated and ill be sure to give the best answer to the best answer FAST! Thank you!!! =]

Answer
Sorry, I'm not Santa Claus.

There is NO place like that in SoCal. State Campgrounds WITHOUT electrical outlets are over $40 per night. Be prepared to pony up some money or stay home.

BTW, how can you offer 5 points? Best answer is worth 10 points. Sheesh.

Camping World is not camping, it's RV'ing. No tent camping. Sheesh.

And no National Park allows free camping "anywhere". The "Yellow Box" campsites are cheap, but VERY remote and difficult to get to. And they are primitive, with NO electricity and NO water (and no toilets, either), which is why I didn't bother mentioning them.

Best places to Camp In Northern CA, Planning a trip soon!?

best tent camping russian river on Portable, Disposable, Go-Anywhere Toilet Design - The Wastetime Post
best tent camping russian river image

Michael

Hey! What are some of the best lakeside RV (full hook up) Campsites in Nor Cal? I have tried researching, but I'd prefer peoples experiences. Also, it would be great if it had jet ski rentals and lots of amenities near by. I'm planning a trip this coming July and need to get it coordinated soon. Your answer is highly appreciated.

Answer
I don't have direct RV experience. However, I suggest that you try Lake Sonoma & Warm Springs Dam area for both jet ski rentals & RV hookup camping. This would be in the Geyserville & Cloverdale areas.

The sites I saw included comments, both positive & negative from campers, including the risk from ticks. (If you get a tick, save it in a jar with lid when you remove it for further testing. It is a risk in Northern California. Also, you might try taking a salt water bath & inspect for ticks carefully each night. I doubt that one area is any other when it comes to ticks. Besides, you can get them out camping or you may get them just as easily from your own backyard, depending on where you live or if you have animals bringing them in. When camping or hiking, though, use some caution regarding ticks & snakes when it comes to sitting on a rock or a log.

You might also try the Clear Lake area in Lake County. However, you'll have considerably more windy roads getting there, while the Lake Sonoma area might be closer to the freeway. One campground near the freeway was given as easy for quick trips into town for supplies while having little awareness of the freeway while camping.

There are other camping areas in Sonoma County, such as at the ocean, in the redwoods, such as near Armstrong Redwoods State Park, both in the park & just outside the park (privately owned), & Austin Creek area, all near the Russian River. You may also want to ask around to find someone who's savvy about directing you to secret locations for wild blackberries around side roads & creeks. While it would give you a very rural feel to it, with plenty of beautiful plants in the undergrowth, I'm doubtful that they have the full RV hookup, though you might make inquiries at the private campgrounds outside the park itself. My visiting relatives liked the lower rates at one while they were camping with their tent trailer, as compared to inside the state park.

However, I first gave Lake Sonoma due to your desire for full RV hookup & for jet ski rentals. The main drawback, though, is that you'll be in a much hotter area near Cloverdale & Geyserville than in the Russian River & the coastal areas, where you'll receive the evening cool downs from nature's air conditioning coming from the coast. Also, you may love the beautiful canopy from the redwoods near the Russian River. Just don't expect it to be the boating or lake experience that you're wanting. Boating on the Russian River is more oriented toward canoes.

If you want a variety of things to do beyond lakeside & camping, you may prefer Sonoma County to Lake County, which may have fewer things to do besides on the lake. I would associate it with the more rural & isolated experience, although you could drive into Calistoga for hot springs, spas, fine dining, & charm.

How many Government Officials attend the Bohemian Club.?

Q.

Answer
All of the former Presidents and many high officials (as stated in Answer #1) have been invited to join The Bohemian Club as Honorary Members, thereby not having to wait the requisite 20 or 25 year 'waiting period' after a 'regular' person has to wait, which includes being nominated by a present member for initiation. One of the reasons for the waiting period is to 'follow' the nominee/applicant's life, making sure that that person has no scandals or other distasteful character flaws which would bring dishonor to The Club. And it will occasionally happen that a member is booted because of a scandal after being initiated, but it is rare.

Originally started as a club populated by writers and artists, the membership roles have expanded to include people of all backgrounds, but one of their commonalities is money: there is a very steep (= $$$) Initiation Fee, as well as ongoing annual fees and User Fees, such as when members and their invited guests attend the Summer Weekend and other events, both at The Grove as well as at The Club in downtown San Francisco.

The Grove itself is a stunningly beautiful large acreage of old-growth redwood trees sited along the Russian River near Guerneville, north of San Francisco. The members have organized themselves into sub-groups called Camps; each Camp is made up of a series of buildings and/or tents. Most of the camps have a building housing a kitchen and bar, as well as buildings (or tents) for sleeping. many of the camps have deck areas where members (and their guests) meet for discussions, cocktails, general schmoozing and meals. Members of a Camp pay for the maintenance, repair, upkeep and any additions to their particular camp, but they are not allowed to do the work themselves. There is an on-site crew which performs all of those functions, and it ain't cheap. I know of one Camp that wanted to expand their deck; what had been, say, a 20' by 20' deck was about tripled in size... for $100,000 .. and all wood used is redwood, harvested from fallen trees on The Property.

The summer weekend fee includes a prepaid breakfast and dinner; members can either reserve a table for lunch, but many Camps have lunches on their deck. There's a LOT of alcohol (usually) and cigar-smoking going on. But some of the salient features of time spent at The Grove includes the prohibition of cell phones, cameras, video recorders, amplified music and NO business talk (although that would be hard to prove that it doesn't take place). There are some pay phones on the grounds for members to use and they are often quite busy.

A few more odd features: women are NOT allowed on the grounds except for waitresses (and only because of a lawsuit), and female guests on Family Day ... no female is allowed to spend the night in The Grove. However, there is rumored to be an active 'liaison' scenario called 'going across the bridge' or 'going to town' in which some male members leave The Grove at night to enjoy some female companionship with eager local women ... but *cough* that's just a rumor ...

One thing that's NOT a rumor is odd, but understandable given the grown-up-boy mentality is this: because women are not allowed, when members feel the need to pee and they're not near a bathroom, it is normal and accepted practice to 'whip it out' and pee against any of the many giant redwoods; after a meal, it is not unusual to see anywhere from one to a dozen men standing at the base of a redwood, whizzing away. Ah, boys and their 'toys.'

I've been to The Grove and I must say that it's beautiful. I can only imagine that local developers have been drooling for years over being able to get their hands on that property. But with the financial heavyweights who are members, the chances of The Bo's leaving or selling that property are nil.

Cletus

Camp site should have the following requirements;

1) Secluded- don't want a camp site right next to another group of people
2) Outdoor fires should be allowed
3) Drinking should be allowed
4) Should be near water, waterfall would be optimal, lake is ok. For swimming and/or fishing.
5) Hiking/views, should be able to make long hike for cool views or long hike to camp ground.

Anything else noteworthy about recommended locations would be great. Is it near any mountains, does it have bike trails, is it haunted... you get the idea. The more details the better, personal experience is preferred.

Answer
PA - there are several near Gettysburg if you want haunted. Most are family type camp grounds, but if you call around, a couple have camping off the beaten path and not next to the rest of the camp ground. My favorite is Artillery Ridge. Granite Hill was very nice as well.

VA - Have you been to Big Meadows in the Blue Ridge Mountains? It is part of the Skyline Drive sights. There are several long trails to waterfalls and amazing overlooks. AT trail cuts through here as well. that would be the Appalachian Trail. Big Meadows has some camp sites that are not right next to the parking areas and require a little hike out to the site to pitch your tent. This campground has lots of wildlife that are very docile around humans. We woke up to a buck and doe sleeping right up against our tent. Fox were chasing chipmunks through the site as well and we had to get the ranger to set 2 dogs on a renegade bear that wanted to check our vehicles for food. Bears are smart. If they don't smell food near the tent, they will check the cars. I guess they realize that people have to eat and keep their food near enough to get to it in a pinch.

NY - Head for the Hudson Valley - never camped there myself, however spoke to people who have and there are lots of trails to hike.

My recommendation is not to go to a state or federal campground if you want to drink. They all say no alcohol allowed. Don't know anyone that actually followed that rule, but all campgrounds around here have it.

Check with the VA Blue Ridge officials about back country camping. There are permits available for the Appalachian Trail too.

Enjoy your trip to this region.

How much would it cost to spend 2 months camping?

best tent camping new mexico on Navajo National Monument Arizona - Arizona Navajo National Monument
best tent camping new mexico image

Plus

We're wanting to take June and July off and just go camping through the state of New Mexico and the grand canyon.

We'll have $1,500 a month and $400 a month for food.
Our monthly going out would be $110 for phones, $157 for our truck, $63 for insurance, plus diapers, wipes and dog food, so about $100.

We plan on staying about 5-7 days in each location, and one of those weeks we'll be staying for free at someone's house.

We're considering buying a cab over camper, it'll be slightly easier than tent camping, but I think it'll be more expensive.

We'll be bringing bikes, so when we stop we won't be driving a ton.

Our main ideas are the grand canyon, Carlsbad caverns, white sands, Roswell, etc.

Does this sound possible with our income?

Answer
$1900 per month should do you just fine. People have made that tour on a whole lot less. Assuming your vehicle is in good shape. It's getting hot out there though. Carry lots of water.
I've been to Carlsbad Caverns, it's very wonderful.
Grand Canyon is going to cost you some. I have heard that they don't even allow cars at the South rim any more, gotta park outside and get bused in. Check on that and be prepared.
White Sands and Roswell won't cost much and I assume Roswell has camping.

You should be able to do all that with the resources you have. I wouldn't do the RV thing, it costs a lot to park them and they require lots of maintenance (and fuel). Use tents.

Hope it goes well!! Sounds like a great trip.

Since the federal Government under the control of the Obama administration refuses?

CHANCE

to secure the border and deport Illegal invaders, Could the State of Arizona build Sheriff Joe Arpaio style tent camps all over the state and incarcerate illegals until ICE decides to pick them up and use them for farm labor at 22 cents per hour or let them work for their keep? If given a choice deportation or work camp which do you think they would choose?

Answer
Put about 500 on an airplane to Afghanistan. Drop them off in a remote airfield. Point in the direction of Mexico. 12,000 miles that way...--> good luck.

Be careful illegal when you step over that border, you never know where that foot might fall.

We are camping all summer 3 months or so. Can we save a lot of money if we do Good Sam or some other? We live in Oregon, USA. They all claim big savings like 80% which seems like it has to be hogwash. We will be tent camping only by the way. And I am aware of free dispersed camping.
Has anyone tried thousand trails?

Answer
The discount memberships only save you money at private operations like KOA or anything like those. Those facilities are geared to the recreational vehicle crowd you know the big house on wheels set up. Some of those parks have tent camping area's so it's really up to you.

If you are staying in county, state or national forest or parks the only thing those memberships help you with is finding the listing for the park and giving you the information you need to make a reservation which you could do on your own.

Another less costly way to get the information is with your triple A membership. A lot of folks just have the membership for the emergency road service, what they don't realize is that with that is a free trip planning service where they find the campgrounds and all the attractions along your route and put it all in a neat road map package. You still have to make the reservations if need be.

The only discounts offered to state, county or national forests and parks are Senior over age 65 deals and if you qualify that really is the only deal you don't want to miss.

Thousand Trails is a promotional deal where private camping operations have formed an affiliation. You don't need a membership to use their facilities but they do give priority for reservations to members and the popular destinations get booked early because of that. Their are a couple of nice ones that I know of but most are sink whole tourist traps.

What are the 5 best camping areas on the Northern Coast of California?

We are looking for great camping areas north of San Francisco along the coast. We want to stay fairly close to the ocean, have dogs, bikes, hiking shoes and a tent. We will go as far as the Oregon border but hopefully not that far.

We hope to stay in 2-3 different locations with different environments.

What are your favorite camping areas and why?

Thanks so much!

Answer
My favorites are:

Van Damme State Park just south of Mendocino. This park has a sheltered cove that is great for kayaking (tours available), and a really nice trail up the Little River. Mendocino is worth a visit.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Elk Prairie Campground). This park has wonderful redwood forests. Don't miss the drive out to the coast. The hike through Fern Canyon is a must.

Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park (almost to the Oregon border, but the best campground on the list). This is a spectacular campground on the banks of the Smith River. Stout Grove is just across the river from the campground and is one of the most magnificent groves of redwoods I've ever seen. The drive on Howland Hill road is incredible (dirt road, passable in most cars).

Not bad:

MacKerricher State Park. On the coast with lots of harbor seals.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Albee Creek Campground (may not have trailer sites). The nearby Rockefeller Forest is the largest old-growth redwood forest left in California. Rumors are that the tallest tree in the world is in this grove, but the people who measure these things are pretty secretive.

Where to go camping in or around Maryland?

Hawk

I am new to Maryland and the east coast. Where do people go camping? I am from California so I am used to rugged high mountain camping. I know Maryland does not have any high (8,000+ ft) mountains, but where are the sucluded forested areas? Interested in tent camping and fishing but not on the coast.

Answer
Try these state parks:

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

tents for camping us image

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

What are some good camping areas close to San Francisco?

wicket_wm

We are flying into San Francisco in the middle of May to go camping. We would like either beach access, or redwoods, or both would be great. Something within 3 hours of San Fran where we could rent a cabin (we will consider tent camping but flying with all the gear would be difficult). We will have a 3 year old with us so something kid friendly with rangers/security of some kind is needed. Right now we are mostly looking at Big Basin, but we are searching for other options as well. Any suggestions?

Answer
You might want to look into a KOA Cabin. They have several locations throughout the state.
Since you were thinking about Big Basin here is a link to the one in Santa Cruz County.

What fun things can I do in Yellowstone?

Ceci Me

I'm taking a trip there in a few days and I was wondering what kind of stuff they have there and what things I can do on the way there. :) Also we will be in a tent. Will I get eaten by bears?

Answer
Yellowstone National Park is one of the coolest places to visit on Earth. You will enjoy viewing all kinds of geysers, and make sure to view Old Faithful. Yellowstone Falls is very beautiful and you can hike down to the very edge of the falls. So many other places are great too, such as mammoth hot springs, the artist paint pots, Yellowstone lake, the dragon's mouth and the sulfur cauldron. If you want to see wildlife, go to the Hayden Valley around dusk. You can see bison, wolves, moose, elk, and bears there. You will be fine in a tent in the camping areas. More people are hurt by bison than bears.
FYI, Half Dome is a geologic feature of Yosemite National Park, not Yellowstone.

Is it right for my scoutmaster to ban all of the boys from a planning committee in Boy Scouts?

Bradley K

About a year ago, my troop began planning a trip to Yellowstone National Park for 2008. We set up a seperate committee incuding boys and adults. My scoutmaster though, is not in favor of the trip what-so-ever because he thinks that the cabin we are staying in is too nice for Boy Scouts. A few months ago he came to a Yellowstone committee meeting for the first time so far. The only thing that he said though is that he is banning all of the boys from the yellowstone meetings because it is not a trip that we should be planning. All of the other adults though want us to be there so that we can give our opinion on what we want to do on the trip. The adults do not want to tell him this because it will start an argument, and he may then try to cancel the whole trip. Also, every few days he will bring up the trip to us and he keeps telling us that if we do not raise enough money or have enough boys go, that we will not be going on the trip. Is it right for him to ban us all from the meetings?

Answer
Hello Bradley:

Thank you for your question. The organization is called the Boy Scouts, not the Old Man Scouts. To ban a youth member from a planning committee for a trip that the youth choose to organize is wholly against the precepts of the movement. The purpose of the movement is to train young men to make decisions. I've heard of Scoutmasters having to beg, prod, bribe and pressure boys to attend planning meetings, but a SM who bars boys from them needs to revisit the training book.

Is your Scoutmaster the adult in charge of the activity, or is another adult the designated adult for this outing? If your Scoutmaster is the designated leader, perhaps you should request the Committee appoint another leader for this specific trip.

Finding suitable Scoutmasters is difficult, so you don't want to alienate your current SM. Do you know his specific objections other than the lodging? The focus of the experience is planning and executing the trip, not specifically staying in tents. You will have less equipment to deal with, and can just enjoy the experience.

Mind you, however, Yellowstone is a fantastic area for camping. Did your group look into back-country camping as an option? You might go with an outfitter, rather than staying at the lodge the whole time. This way they supply the gear, food, and itinerary, you just go and enjoy the activity.

If you would like a better forum for this type of query, visit http://www.scouter.com/Forums/ . There are thousands of very experienced Scouters who may have more insight to this situation.

Keep on Scoutin'

I am planning a camping trip with two friends. We need to buy a camping tent but I don't know what size of the tent is suitable for three people. I did a little search online and someone said should choose a tent which can accommodate two more person because there must be some space for the camping equipment. Is this true? Is a five man tent a little larger for three?

Answer
A five man tent is just fine. I do a lot of camping and I use a 2-3 person tent for just me, and a 4 person tent when I take the wife and kid along.

Unless your back country camping you can't go wrong with getting a bigger roomier tent.

My friends and I would like to go on a camping trip this summer. We are picturing canoeing down a river and camping in a tent on the shore in like a forest I guess. We want the river to be very easy to navigate with no danger possible. We live in Kansas and don't want to drive more than 7 hours; we were thinking somewhere in Arkansas or South or North Dakota. Any suggestions or tips? Thanks

I'm trying to write a little story that starts in an almost post apocalyptic town in Illinois. Here in Arkansas we have a gun section and a camping aisle I was wondering if walmarts there had guns and tents and stuff?

Answer
Well it really does depend on the state like i use to live in New York and after 911 no bb guns or airsoft guns. Never had regular guns but now in South Carolina they only have airsoft and bb guns no real guns.

My boyfriend and I are planning to drive to SD from phx to go tent camping on a beach for a weekend. I have tried to look up beaches in San Diego to camp but so many around LA pop up and that is too far a drive for us. I would seriously love any recommendations of camp sites that have an ocean view-not a bay- from anyone to make my search easier! Thanks!

Answer
The drive from phx to la is shorter than you think, Google map your route, however forget camping at so cal beaches this year as all are reservations only and were booked up completely 6 months ago. To try and get reservations go to these two web sites,

Going tent camping What should we do at night and camping checklist?

Artsygirly

Im going tent camping and there is plently to do during the day but what should we do at night besides sitting around the fire? Also if you could make me a camping checklist i would apreciate it! Thanks!

Answer
Will you be "family" camping or primitive camping with friends? My group usually brings a few different beverages and a variety of food. At night we sit around the bomb fire and share stories, laugh, and play drinking games. During the day we go canoeing on the river for about 4-5 hrs and that typically exhaustes us to just relax at night. If your going primitive camping its important to bring the essintals b/c you DEF need them. Depending on the type of camping you'll be doing will depend on what you'll need. Here just a few items I can think of:

Tent
Tarp
Stakes (if not included w/ tent)
Flashlight/ Lantern- wick- kerosine
Stakes Hammer
Camping knife
Water- LOTS
Food
Portable Grill or Stove
Utinesils/Plates
Trash bags/ Toilet Paper (if no bathrooms are provided)
Water Sealant for tent
Cooler
Radio
Matches/Lighter
Wood (usually can be bought from the camp site)

I have been looking in middle and east Tennessee.
Also do you know any good free primitive camping sites in middle or east Tennessee.

Answer
the great smoky mountains national park is an amazing place to go camping; 800 miles of trails, fishing, horseback riding, amazing waterfalls, tons of wildlife, camping there is $14-$23 a night; this is a great place to go camping, i have been there many times with my family and we can't wait to go back this summer

I really want to camp somewhere with nice scenery around Georgia or Tennessee with nobody around?

GreenSpoon

I've been trying to find a good spot to camp in where I don't have to deal with other campers or anything, I want to be in complete solitude with my buddy. Any ideas? I don't want to go to some cabin in a National Park with other people, I just want to bring a tent and camp somewhere nice for 3 days or something, please.

Answer
Tennessee has the Great Smokey Mountains. Pieces of it are very popular camp/trailer sites, but I'm sure there are tons of other places on site that are far less inhabited. The mountains are beautiful!

What size backpack should I get for 3month euro trip?

Max_Power

I'm going to be backpacking in Europe for about 3 months in September.I was looking at getting a Black Wolf 'Cuba' backpack. they come in 65ltrs, 70 and 90ltrs. Which should I get. I''d say the biggest item I'll be taking is my running shoes, but I may also be buying (just a couple) things along my travels. Here's a link to the bag I wanna buy:

http://www.productreview.com.au/p/black-wolf-cuba.html

Answer
You did not explain whether you will be packing a sleeping pad, sleeping bag, and tent. You did not mention whether you will be packing food by the day, week, or month. Without that gear, you should be able to pack everything in a 65 L or 70 L backpack. If you purchase items along the way, ship them home. I am using a 70 L GoLite Terrono for a three-week backpacking trip to Alaska with sleeping pad, sleeping bag, tent, and food.

Ask your question under the "Camping" forum for more opinions and provide more details about how you go "backpacking."

Answer
The big problem you have right now is that all the best spots for camping close to you have been reserved 6 months ago. There is no beach camping available at all in california all it's booked up till fall. Now there are still a lot of first arrival sites but they are to the north and east of you. The cleavland national forest up by Julian has a lot of nice camping, around Cuyamaca lake. Farther to the north in the Big bear area you may find some dispersed area's near the lake and a bit farther from the Big bear area some first arrival sites in the Holcomb valley area. here is a link to some camping info I use

What are the best camping spots near San Diego?

mayerj72

I would want there to be a lake or river if possible. Please only provide me with 2-3 of your favorite campgrounds and not a whole list. Otherwise I won't be able to make a good decision.

Thanks!

Answer
In San Diego county there aren't any really outstanding campgrounds near rivers or lakes, but here are some you might enjoy. I have camped at all of them, unlike some of the other responses here which seem pretty clearly to come from copying the internet as opposed to having actually been there.

Green Valley Falls Campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park comes to mind as it's right near a river and there's nice hiking. My only hesitation in recommending it outright is that it's in an area affected by recent wildfires and they've been clearing trees out of there recently. I'd suggest you contact the rangers for an update. It's got mostly giant oaks there along with a few pines. It's in a mountainous area with lots of nice hikes. And it's not too far a drive. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_ID=667

Another nice place near water would be Palomar Mt State Park, Doane Pond Campground. It probably takes only 20 minutes to walk around Doane Pond so it's not too big but I have seen people fish there, so it's big enough for that. There are also several creeks that run through the park and beautiful views to the ocean on clear days. It's quite nice up there, and next to the park is the famous Mt. Palomar Observatory, which is open to the public but you have to check out ahead of time the days and hours as it's limited visiting. Since it has a famous telescope there (actually a number of them on site) you know that it's a pretty good place for clear skies at night and star watching. However, it's elevation is high enough that if you plan to go camping soon, if you are going to be in a tent as opposed to an RV, it's going to be getting cold soon at night. http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/637/files/palomarmountain.pdf

A third place I thought about is in the Pine Hills area near Julian, at a county campground called William Heise County Park. It's very pretty there, pretty hikes, one spectacular hike through the mountains and trees with a panoramic viewpoint of the desert and the Salton Sea. Bonus if you are going soon is that you pass an orchard right outside the park boundaries with apples you either buy by the pound on the honor system, already picked, or you can go out into the orchards and buy your own. They taste so much better than what you buy in the stores, you'll want to get some for family and friends. Not much in the way of water features but as I said, it's a pretty park. http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/parks/Camping/heise.html

If you would like camping by the beach South Carlsbad is nice, but it's a little strange as you camp very close to a road and there's road noise that might be irritating if you're camping in a tent. However, on the other side is a spectacular ocean view and access. I'd guess if you were in an RV or use earplugs you'd do fine. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=660

Another option would be the San Mateo Campground near Camp Pendleton which has a wonderful trail to the beach along a river canyon to the famous surf spot the Tressles. The campground isn't particularly good or bad, sort of undistinguished, and it's strange that you can hear the shooting range at Pendleton in the background sometimes. But the trail thru the canyon to the beach is really quite unique and beautiful http://www.caopenspace.org/trestles.html

Answer
Coleman and Ozark trail make some good tents that won't break the bank. Remeber the first trip may not go as great as you are expecting so don't give up with just one time. I was ready to never take my 4 year old with me again after his first trip when he was 2, However after many more trips now i hate leaving him behind. You could also look into renting a camper for you first go at it. Remeber to take any "favorites" such as a blanket or stuffed animal. Hope you and your son have a great time making unforgetable memories.

What is an ideal tent for 2 people?

nana

The thing is we're looking for an ideal tent to go camping.
The criteria:
-I'm quite big (6.06 feet)
-we would like to fit a 2 person mattress in it
-we'd like to have enough space to fit in our luggage (two big bags)
-our budget is around 150$

It seems that most tents are either not long enough (my feet are coming out of the tent if I lie down) or it is too much of a tunnel (meaning our heads will touch the tent if we use the mattress for comfort).

Most tents I've found so far are 4 person tents which are reaaally expensive or have some flaws like it might rain inside if there's a bit of wind.
