How to camp without most camping equipment?

Me and the family are going to a family reunion, and most of the family are staying in tents and camping while my family are staying in a cabin. I don't want to stay in a cabin, I want to Bear Gryll my way through the weekend. I don't have a tent, and as far as I know, I don't have a sleeping bag. I do however, have tools essential for a proper camping trip. (machete, cooler, lighter, water bottle, playboy mags, flashlight, filter etc) I would appreciate it if someone could give me some camping/survival tips, or point me in the right direction as far as internet tutorials go, whether it is an article or a Youtube video etc. Although it would be preferred if someone knowledgeable of surviving in the wild would answer my question, and give a detailed, several paragraph answer on the essentials of hardcore survival. (even if I will just be within spitting distance of my cabin, albeit, a very far spitting distance. Like a genetically modified camels version of a spitting distance.)

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Learn to camp with equipment and prepare for any circumstance, then decide how to camp with less.

In my pockets, I always carry a pocket knife and fire starter, tissues or lint packets, along with several bandages in my wallet. Although reception does not exist in many gulches, I carry a cell phone that usually functions above tree-line.

In my daypack, I have compression sacks that hold my down jacket, heat packs, windbreaker, and down mittens or lighter gloves. I carry a second fire starter and two headlamps with extra batteries. I pack trail snacks, such as cheese, nuts, and rice chips. Attached by carabiner, I have at least two water bottles, sunglasses, reading glasses, and global positioning system. On most hikes, I also carry a water filter.

Are there any good camping places to take kids 10-14 in Missouri?

MommaDoo

We want to take our kids who have never camped somewhere family oriented. My husband and I both grew up tent camping.

Answer
We live in the Missouri Ozarks and have 5 children ages 9, 11, 12, and two 14 year olds. Our favorite place to take our family is Alley Springs campground on the Jacks Fork river. It is about 6 miles west of Eminence. It offers plenty of sites, some with electric, hot showers, flat level sites with paved roads for bike riding, and a good swimming hole. About 1/2 mile away is the Alley Springs Mill and spring with two hiking trails, one that goes around the spring area, and then a more difficult one that goes up to a lookout that is above the spring. It is a beautiful place. Hope this helps!

what to bring on a camping trip?

Daniel

I am a police explorer and we are having a camping trip (4 days 3 nights). They are bringing the food and shelter, I have never gone camping before so i know very little of what to bring.
Oh I live in Arizona and there is going to be showers in walking distance.
1 more thing we are allowed to bring knifes and all that good stuff!

Answer
You have to ask, WHERE are you camping. Near a beach, deep in the forest trail, mountain, well managed accessible park?

WHAT are you doing? Is it a family event with children? Just adults but relaxed, or "real" camping?

CONDITIONS: Will you have water and electricity? Shower and toilet facilities? Check weather forecast.

Go to the state park website whichever state you are camping and read the reviews and research the details.

But for generalization: cover the essentials.
1. Lighting - Gas/propane/battery lantern, LED headlamps.
2. Sleeping pad/bag and pillow - $5 foam at wal-mart or self inflating pad for about $20-25. or an airbed for about $80. You need to protect your spine if you are not used to sleeping on the ground.
3. First Aid kit, insect repellent, sun screen, citronella candles.
4. Tools - knife, ax, mallet/hammer, small shovel, matches/lighter, multi-tool.
5. Shelter - Ropes, Nylon, bungees. Tarps - In case it rains, most tents are not water proof.
6. Clothing - Minimal essential clothing, they take up space quickly, but don't run out. Or just keep them in the car.
7. Water - Plenty of drinking water, you might have to run to a store after 2 days. More if you plan to do physical activities like sports. And get some Ice while you're at the store. Extra Ice is always good.
8. Coolers - Keep raw meats cold and separate from ready to eat food.
9. Cooking - Propane stoves or coal and fire wood. utensils. Don't forget the propane.
10. Hygiene - Your personal kit, Dish soap/sponges, trash bags.
11. Cash - You never know.
12. Toys - whatever constitute to you as a toy. Board games, cards, musical instruments, boom box, bike, hammock.

I gave you a list not of items but conditions and what to fill them with.
Basically, whatever you do inside, you're just doing it outside.
Coordinate with others and try to help each other.
Camping is about functioning as a community.

If food and cooking are covered, it should even be easier.
You will end up with:
1 large camping backpack - Basic essentials
1 medium cooler - Food/water
1 handheld lamp.

Be safe and Have Fun!

Need recommendation for a hotel near Yosemite National Park?

Annieme71

We are going to visit Yosemite for a day in September. Is there a nice place at around the park to stay or do you have to stay in a nearby town?

Answer
Hey there! September is a really good time to visit, once some of the summer-vacation crowds have left. I used to live and work in the Yosemite area, and have tried many of the places to stay both in and around the park. Here are some recommendations.

*INSIDE YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK*

In Yosemite Valley, the heart of the park, the cabins at Curry Village are fun, though the safari-style tents may be too rustic if you're not into camping. The Lodge at Yosemite Falls has typical cookie-cutter motel rooms -- not worth the price. If money is no object, the Ahwahnee hotel is luxurious.

In the southern part of the park, near the biggest redwood tree grove, the Wawona Hotel is an old-fashioned place. If you'd rather stay up in the high country of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park has tent cabin lodging near Tuolumne Meadows that's fun for families, though a bit rustic.

You can find out more info about all of these in-park accommodations here:

http://www.yosemitepark.com/

*OUTSIDE YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK*

Most of the towns near the park entrances offer basic motel and hotel lodgings, mostly chains, at inflated prices. I've found the fairest deals in Oakhurst, just south of the park. You can peruse recent traveler reviews here:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g32809-Oakhurst_California-Hotels.html

Otherwise, Groveland (northwest of the park) has some good options, too, in many price ranges. Our all-time favorite place to stay near Yosemite is the Evergreen Lodge:

http://www.evergreenlodge.com/

Just outside the park's west entrance, the hostel-like Yosemite Bug has cozy cabins, tents and dorms for budget travelers, family-style:

http://www.yosemitebug.com/

Any other questions, just ask! Happy to share what I know about Yosemite. You can click on my profile to email me, too, if you prefer.

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

How to Pick Your Next Camping Tent?

How to Pick Your Next camping tent

Answer
Are you backpacking or car camping? The former stresses compact packed-size and light weight, while the latter favors extra floor space and stand-up height.

Are you a fair-weather camper or all-weather camper? If the latter, make sure your tent has a full-coverage rain fly, one-piece bathtub floor, and lots of guy-down points. Pay attention to reviewer's reports of performance during rain.

Ignore the capacity ratings for tents, there are no true standards. Instead, figure out how much space you and your tent-mates need to layout and sleep comfortably, leaving a little extra room to maneuver. Then get a tent that provides least that much floor space. Remember that sloping walls take away as much as 12" from each dimension unless you want to be pressed against the wall.

How Does A Sleeping Bag Insulate?

trebor_reg

I recently had an argument with my science teacher about a Q i supposedly got wrong in my test.

A sleeping bag insulates by Preventing:
A)Conduction_________________He says this is right
B)Convection_________________I say this is right
C)Radiation__________________He says this is right
D)Insulation

Of course the question is asking which one is most correct

Answer
How does a sleeping bag keep me warm?
Warmth in a sleeping bag is a direct result of keeping the warmth generated by your body inside the bag, while keeping the cold air outside.
Three factors that affect warmth...
1. Insulation - Since air is a poor conductor of heat, the trapped air within the insulation acts like a thermal barrier between you and the cold air outside the bag by not letting your body heat escape from the bag. The insulation traps air and keeps it from moving around, hence the phrase "dead air". The more dead air you can trap, the more you will be insulated from the cold, and the warmer your bag will be.
2. Construction - How the sleeping bag is stitched or sewn also has a lot to do with the heat integrity of the bag. For example, if the outer liner material is stitched through the insulation to the inner liner material, this construction will not perform as efficiently as if the outer material is quilted to the insulation. This means the stitch lines don't go all the way through and thus, will not allow heat to escape through stitch holes.
3. Environment - The use of a sleeping mat or pad can improve the thermal performance of your sleeping bag by as much as 10° F, not to mention the added benefit when using a tent or bivy shelter. The advertised temperature ratings are only guidelines and assume the use of a ground pad and the user being inside a shelter.
The body loses heat three ways...
1. Convection takes place when warm air moves away from the body through openings in the bag and by air movement in large gaps between the body and the bag.
2. Radiation is the process of radiant energy leaving the body and passing through the material of the bag.
3. Conduction is the transfer of body heat through still air and through the materials that make up the insulator.
http://www.slumberjack.com/faq.asp#howwarm

This page suggests that a sleeping bag prevents heat loss from Convection, Conduction, Evaporation, and Radiation while it explicitly states, "The most important losses for a sleeping person are conduction and convection." http://www.bask.info/info/papers/heat_balance_and_temperature_ratings_for.html

This is from REI's website:
"Here are explanations of thermodynamic terms sometimes used when discussing sleeping bags:
* Convection: When your warm body comes in contact with cold air, the air close to you heats up while you lose warmth. A sleeping bag works to offset convection by trapping a layer of warmed air close to your body.
* Conduction: Heat transfer caused by physical contact. Sleep on frozen ground and you are susceptible to losing body heat due to conduction. The ground is trying to reduce your body temperature and your body is trying to warm the ground. To win this battle, sleep on a good pad.
* Radiation: The sensation you feel when standing near a fire or a block of ice is radiation. A warm body radiates more energy than it absorbs; the environment absorbs more than it radiates."
http://www.rei.com/online/store/LearnShareDetailArticlesList?categoryId=Camping&url=rei/learn/camp/howslbags4f.jsp

There's a huge explanation here as an excerpt from the NOLS Wilderness First Aid manual that explains how heat is lost: http://www.nols.edu/store/product.php?productid=16378&cat=286&bestseller

I'd say your instructor needs some instruction.

I am leading a youth group camping trip this summer and I'm looking for a very large tent to accommodate optimally 15-16 people? I have looked at several 12 person tents (Gettysburg 12 Family Camping Tunnel Tent, Trekker⢠20' x 16' Cabin Tent and the Copper Canyon 12), but was hoping for something maybe a bit bigger.

Positive reviews about waterproofing is also a must. Our tents last year leaked horribly in the rain, even with the rain fly on and tarp underneath.

Answer
How much money do you have, how big do you need to go?
http://armytents.com/tents/tent-tmpr.html

As far as managing a group several smaller tents would be more suitable, you can arrange the tents around a central canopy for example like the circling of the wagon trains of old. this works best with vertical wall tents of the cabin styles like the Copper Canyon 12 or the Coleman Instant 8. Figure also gear for each camper unless they are on a cot each person will have gear that takes up sleeping space so figure 1 extra space for 3 persons is needed so a four man tent actually comfortably sleeps three, an eight man sleeps 6 and so on.

Personally as having been there done that thousands of times as a scoutmaster, The Coleman Tent family has the best reputation for staying dry in and not breaking the bank, so I highly recommend them.

What are good camp/fish-ing parks near San Jose?

XOXO gg

So, my family and I are trying to find a nice tent-camping and fishing park before school starts up again near the end of August. We've been to the Pinnacles and San Luis Reservoir and although nice, we're still looking. Someone told me Angel Island, but my brother-in-law is freaked out by being on an island overnight (I don't know why), so I'm looking for help.

Any suggestions?

I really want to travel to Ireland, but am not exactly flush with funds. Any ideas on some cost effective, but safe ways to travel and see Ireland? Thanks so much!
I would like to be there for about a week, and hostel accommodations would be great if they are safe (are they? i have no clue). I would love to see the countryside more than the cities. I like in Rochester NY, USA. Thanks so much!

Answer
Can you give us some more info on this please?

How long are you coming for?
Would you make do with hostel accommodation?
Are you wanting to see the countryside or the cities?
Where are you coming from?
=========================================
edit:

OK, first thing to bear in mind is that Ireland is split in two. In the North (Northern Ireland) they use Sterling (British money), in the south (Republic of Ireland) they use the Euro, so if you are going to visit both, try to make sure you have both currencies.

For Hostels, in Belfast there's Arnies ( http://www.arniesbackpackers.co.uk/ ) and in the south theres An Ãige (The Irish Youth Hostel Assoc) ( http://www.anoige.ie/ - they have hostels all over)

If you can afford a little more and are stopping in Belfast, then the place we use to put up friends/family if there is not enough room in the house is Kate's B&B ( http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/product.aspx?ProductID=4534 )

To make the trip cheaper, there are a number of bus tickets you can get that give you pretty much unlimited travel ( https://www.buseireann.ie/asp/ExplorerList.asp ) and you can view the timetables on line for Northern Ireland ( http://www.translink.co.uk/ ) and for the south by visiting ( https://www.buseireann.ie/site/home/ )

Something else you need to bear in mind is that Ireland is colder than a lot of the US. The reason it is so green is that it never stops raining :-)

There are also quite a few camp sites, but unless you have a very waterproof tent, you are taking a risk.

If you want to look up non-Ãige hostels or Bed & Breakfasts on your own, a good place to start is http://www.goldenpages.ie for the south or http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/index.publisha for Northern Ireand.

Now, all you need is to decide where you want to go, find local hostels, and plan the buses.

Need any more help, email me.

places in jersey to go camping and fishing?

jay

so i live in central jersey and i'm thinking about going camping. is there anywhere i can go with a couple of other people that's just away from a lot of other campers and people or if not some kind of campground and how much it would be to stay on the campground? preferably somewhere where we can catch some fish.

Answer
Jersey, as in the Channel Islands of the UK, or New Jersey, in the United States? If the former, I don't know. But as for the latter, camping is available 16 state parks and forests, and over 100 commercial campgrounds throughout the state of NJ.

For a place that's away from other campers and offers good fishing, you might consider the Wilderness Camping at Round Valley Reservoir. Although you might be able to see other campers from your spot, it is a 3+ mile hike from the parking area to the closest campsite, and 6 miles to the furthest. So not a lot of people go here. The reservoir is 2,000 acres and 180 feet deep, hosting lake trout, browns and rainbows, as well as bass, pickerel and other species. I camped here a few times many years ago, and it's a nice campground and the reservoir is amazing. Recommended.

In the NJ Pineleands, Wharton State Forest has several Remote and Primitive Campsites. Remote campsites are available via sand roads only (4WD recommended), and vehicles are prohibited in Primitive Campsites. No facilities are available. There are many streams, rivers and lakes in the area to choose from for fishing. Prices range from $2 per person to $20 per night. I go to the Pinelands frequently, and usually stay at one of the remote sites where I will encounter one or two other campers during most weeks. Also Recommended.

Also, the structures available for rent at many state parks and forests are often isolated from other camping areas. Lean-To's, Yurts and Cabins are available from $35 to over $100 per night, with a 7-day minimum during the summer season. Check the maps on the NJDEP website. I've stayed in cabins at state parks a few times at Stokes and Wharton, and they are a nice family alternative to staying in a tent or RV. Stokes also has a lake and great fishing.

As for commercial campgrounds, many are located on rivers, streams and lakes, where fishing is good. But none that I'm aware of offer sites that are isolated from other campers. Costs at commercial sites range from $25 - $80 per night, depending on amenities and site selection. The principal advantages being you can bring your dog and your beer.

Q. I am planning on traveling from texas to virginia with my college friends
I dont think it is good idea to stay at rest area in highway even i am male and all my friends are male.
The airport lobby seems to be the safest place, but I might get ticket from them!

Is there any place to sleep safe and cheap in any states besides hotel or inn?

Answer
Get a tent a sleep in camping grounds. There are many around the country.

What would be some cool things to do for a weekend?

Sandfrog

We had planned to do some ATV and dirt-bike riding in West Virginia but turns out 21 isn't old enough to rent one of their dirt-bikes. So we are thinking of other things to do. I wouldn't mind doing some white water rafting again, but only of there isn't anything else appealing enough to do. There's also sky diving, but that's very brief and expensive. Bungee jumping, same thing really. This is a Birthday present for a friend, so board games need not apply. Thanks.
Hey cope, thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, neither one of us are into fishing much. Probably not looking to relax, looking for something on the aggressive or extreme side. Camping or hiking is fun to do with the family, but we need something....dangerous. You know us young folk, think we're bullet proof and like to scare the elderly etc...

Answer
How about a long canoeing weekend? Take a tent, and camp along the river wherever you like. Try to "rough it" and live off the land as much as possible.Surely there are National Forests there that are large enough to do this?

Do they have organized hunts for boar or deer in your state? That might be adventurous, or maybe a remote fishing-lake trip?

Im planning on getting a holiday work visa and going to Australia for a few months.

We are thinking about going from September - November
Is that a good time to go???

**We are wondering about popular places to visit, or stay.
**Places we could work, and the likely ness of getting a job with a work visa?
**How to find a place to stay for the couple of months we are there

And any tips or suggestions

THANKS SOOOO MUCH :)

Answer
September- November? That's spring. A lovely time to visit!

**We are wondering about popular places to visit, or stay.

It depends what your into. If you want to see our city life, there's a few to choose from. Sydney is our biggest City, with lots of clubs and restaurants. Melbourne is the second biggest city, with the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, the Eureka Tower. You can go up the top in the Skydeck. Gold Coast has beautiful beaches, but night life there can be pretty feral and hectic. Perth also has lovely beaches, and is one of our more tropical cities.

There are Motels named 'Mecure' that I highly recommend.

If you want to visit the desert of Australia, around Alice springs is fine. You can climb Uluru, I did a couple of years back, an awesome experience is assured. There's even safaris there!

You can go to Darwin and visit Steve Irwin's (RIP) own zoo.

**Places we could work, and the likely ness of getting a job with a work visa?

Work? How long are you staying for? A couple of months, not many people will hire you, sorry.

**How to find a place to stay for the couple of months we are there

Simply google city or desert locations and hotels.

If your planning on visiting the desert, there won't be many nice hotels, mainly just inn's and things. If you go on a tour, they should supply you with tents and you camp =)

There's plenty of beautiful Australian City hotels.

Heres a list of Melbourne hotels:

Does anyone know any bush camping spot around melbourne (like an couple hours drive) that is cheap or free?
yer when i said melbourne i ment in like the country side surrounding melbourne

Answer
You cant go camping in or around Melbourne, but there are some really nice places in the country. You would be looking at a bit of a drive from the city if you want somewhere you can set up a tent.

Check out the Parks Victoria website; http://www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/1process_details.cfm?activity=5

As Fitz said, Cathedral Ranges is quite close and its a nice place to go camping. There are hiking tracks with some really nice views. I went there on a school camp back in the day. It can get quite cold there this time of year though, this is the time I went up. Make sure you have good boots, a good jacket and a good sleeping bag.

Hope this helps

I wanna go camping like the kind of camping like you take a tent in the wilderness with some friends.
I know i have to consider hunting grounds and private property so were is it safe and legal to do in nj or Pennsylvania even. please list as many as you know
Thanks :)!

Answer
Stealth camp anywhere along the Appalachian trail in Northern NJ. Or, Pine Barrens in Southern NJ. These are areas where you hike for a while and find your spot. Some spots might technically not be legal, but no one should bother you. Out of site, out of mind.

How is this section of my Story? In particular could my introductions use work?

Firepaw

As the airship zoomed through the sky going faster than any airship known to society it's engines started to falter and the crew on board started to get frantic. "Turn on the emergency breaks" shouted some creature over the loud noise of dying engines. As the emergency breaks came on the creatures on the ship relaxed a little and the pilot put the auto-land on high in order to ignore the main engine. As he switched to the second engine the ship sputtered back to life and the crew landed safely in the forest below.

After the ship landed they got out one by one the first to step off was a short stock of a man, with a beard covering almost his entire face and long shaggy hair. The next to get out was a tall slender species with long brown hair and not a touch of facial hair. The green eyes and pointed ears were noticeably the most exotic features on him. As he stepped out he joined the dwarf. The third to come out was the pilot, a species with long slender legs and a greenish brown tint to his skin. The pilot's eyes were beady and stuck out of the top of his head right between his antennas. As he joined his friends by the large tree another being stepped out ducking her head as she came into view. This one had beady eyes as well as a long golden beak. The legs were large and muscular with talons that were covered by armored boots. The last to get out held a cuffed prisoner in front of her wolf like form. As she threw the prisoner forward he stumbled and was caught by the insect. After Shaytara got out she set the ship to stealth mode to keep it hidden in case they needed it later.

As the group gathered around they began to search for a good place to set up a camp. It would only be a one night camp, still, Shaytara decided they would need a tent with a prison room. She took out a steel ball, placed it on the ground and stepped on a button on the top of the ball. In an instant the steel ball transformed into a tent. It stood about four feet over their heads. The prison cell stood in the front of them across from the entrance hall. There were three rooms to their right and two to their left. The table in the center was for dining or meeting at and the small fridge in the wall only contained food that was provided. There was also a microwave oven built into the wall and a stove built into the floor. As Shaytara put the food in the fridge; the bug threw the prisoner in his cell and closed it with a lever on the floor a good three feet away from the prison cell. The group sat at the table in order to have a meeting about their current position. They were after all politicians to some extent.

Just when Shaytara was about to speak the prisoner stirred from his coma as though he was supposed to. The prisoner looked just like Shaytara only larger and more masculine. As he spoke above Shaytara everyone looked at him in disgust. "You're all traitors to the United Galaxies; you will die by my hands when I get out of here." "If you kill one of us in our sleep the rest of us will hear you." "Oh, my dear daughter you're so wrong in assuming you'll be asleep when I kill you." "You're nothing less than a blood spitting coward" said Kadyen the elf. "You're one to speak of cowardice Kadyen. You could be high Prince if you wanted to; instead you let your dull *** brother rule the elves only for the fact that he has magic." "You fool how dare you speak about a member of the high council in such a way." "I should be a representative of the high council; thanks to my very own daughter and her blood spitting mate I'm just a prisoner on a completely unknown world."

I will be camping near Yellowstone at the end of May. I have never been. The area between Yellowstone and Tetons seems like a good general location ... but I really don't know anything. Ideally I will be in an area that allows dispersed camping. I welcome all suggestions, tips, and advice.

Answer
Check in at the ranger station give them an itinerary of your plans and get the dispersed camping permit. Some area's even for dispersed camping require a reservation ie wilderness area's. Be bear aware and know your limitations.

What steps did George Washington take to improve the Colonial Army?

kl

............I'm so interested in him ad his history........but I a little stuck.!!!!!!!!

Answer
In his initial address to the troops when he took charge in Massachusetts, he laid out several goals.

The first order of business was to get organized.

"Exact returns to be made by the proper Officers of all the Provisions Ordnance, Ordnance Stores, Powder, Lead working Tools of all kinds, Tents, Camp Kettles, and all other Stores under their respective care, belonging to the Armies at Roxbury and Cambridge. The commanding Officer of each Regiment to make a return of the number of blankets wanted to compleat every Man with one at least."

Next he addresses discipline:

"It is required and expected that exact discipline be observed, and due Subordination prevail thro' the whole Army, as a Failure in these most essential points must necessarily produce extreme Hazard, Disorder and Confusion; and end in shameful disappointment and disgrace. The General most earnestly requires, and expects, a due observance of those articles of war, established for the Government of the army, which forbid profane cursing, swearing and drunkeness; And in like manner requires and expects, of all Officers, and Soldiers, not engaged on actual duty, a punctual attendance on divine Service, to implore the blessings of heaven upon the means used for our safety and defence."

Then he addressed hygiene

"All Officers are required and expected to pay diligent Attention to keep their Men neat and clean; to visit them often at their quarters, and inculcate upon them the necessity of cleanliness, as essential to their health and service. They are particularly to see, that they have Straw to lay on, if to be had, and to make it known if they are destitute of this article. They are also to take care that Necessarys be provided in the Camps and frequently filled up to prevent their being offensive and unhealthy."

Then he addressed unity in the troops.

Another thing that Washington did that was critical was a unification of all of the different colony's soldiers. In the beginning they all pretty much looked at their colony the way we would look at our country. In fact they often called it their "country". This was important to avoid fighting and jealousies between soldiers from separate colonies. Here is how he addressed it.

"The Continental Congress having now taken all the Troops of the several Colonies, which have been raised, or which may be hereafter raised for the support and defence of the Liberties of America; into their Pay and Service. They are now the Troops of the UNITED PROVINCES of North America; and it is hoped that all Distinctions of Colonies will be laid aside; so that one and the same Spirit may animate the whole, and the only Contest be, who shall render, on this great and trying occasion, the most essential service to the Great and common cause in which we are all engaged."

This may have been his most valuable contribution to the Continental Army as well as the country as a whole. It was the officer and soldiers who went home and taught this unification principle by example and because of their experience. This was a lesson that all of the colonies/states needed to learn in order to survive as the United States. If not for this concept being developed we might still be 13 different countries on the eastern seaboard at best.

One of the answers here that disparaged Washington as an incompetent general and a selfish glory seeking individual was way off the mark. He was not a perfect person. He was like yo and I but he was a great man with great character that was largely responsible for getting the US through the Revolution.

Also, if you read the book he recommended you should know that he could not have gotten such a negative opinion from reading "His Excellency".

Having said that I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as well for someone who wants to delve a little deeper into his life.

What are some weird or amazing facts about Australia?

Answer
Newest Australian Fun Facts:

* Apparently the first European settlers in Australia drank more alcohol per person than any other community in the history of mankind.
* Australian mines (one of our most important industries, which accounts for 15% of Australia's GDP) cover 0.02% of Australia's land mass. More land is occupied by pubs. (Can't find any statistics on the GDP here. My guess is: substantial)
* In 1954 Bob Hawke made it into the Guinness Record Book: he sculled 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds. Bob Hawke went on to become the Prime Minister of Australia.

Fun Facts About Australia - The Latest Stories

Crocodile Slams Into Tree
Who do you think was more scared? The Australian family camping in Kakadu National Park who woke up when a three metre crocodile tried climbing up on their tent? Or the crocodile, when the family started screaming?

The poor croc turned straight around and raced back towards the water, unfortunately overlooking the tree in its way. The tree lost a fair bit of bark and there were two big wet circles where the croc's nose had slammed into the tree...

I Can't Find Uluru
A tourist from New South Wales had to stop another vehicle to ask for directions to Ayers Rock. Nothing strange or funny about it?

Well, Ayers Rock is huge (348 metres high), is the only significant feature along the only road in the area, and he was right in front of the rock with his headlights shining on it! You'd think you'd notice, wouldn't you?

Nope. He pulled over the next car coming along, to ask for directions. The car looked like a ranger's vehicle to him. Well, they were cops instead and they immediately whipped out their breathalyser... 0.116. Too bad...
Fun Facts About Australia - Animals

* There are 1500 hundred species of Australian spiders.
* If you read about our spiders you might not like this: the average person swallows three spiders a year.

* The combined mass of all termites in the world is more than ten times the mass of all people.
* Termites are also called white ants, but they're not ants, in fact not even closely related to ants.
* Australia has the world's largest population of wild camels with one hump.
* The Tasmanian Devil does exist, and it has the jaw strength of a crocodile.
* Sharks are immune to all known diseases.
* There are more than 150 million sheep in Australia, and only some 20 million people.

Fun Facts About Australia - Geography

* Australia has the world's largest cattle station (ranch). At 30,028 km2 it is almost the same size as Belgium.
* Population density in Australia is usually calculated in km2 per person, not people per km2.
* Australians have 380,000 m2 per person available. Yet well over 90% are cramming into our coastal cities. (Don't ask me why, I sure prefer it here in the Outback.)
* We call Australian's from Queensland "banana benders", and people from Western Australia "sandgropers".
* Tasmania has the cleanest air in the world.
* The Great Barrier Reef has a mailbox. You can ferry out there and send a postcard, stamped with the only Great Barrier Reef stamp.
* The Australian Alps, or Snowy Mountains as they are also known, receive more snow than Switzerland.
* Melbourne has the second largest Greek population in the world, after Athens.

Other Miscellaneous Australian Fun Facts

any under 18 beach camping in western australia?

Maeve

My friends and I are planning on going camping withing the next few years but most campsites do not allow under 18 patrons to stay on their grounds. I was wondering if there was any beach camping, roadside camping near the beach, or campsites near the beach that allow under 18 guests in western australia?

Answer
As Molly has said, you will be OK. Your age wont be a problem.

Common sense prevails.....one would not camp in the middle of Cottesloe Beach, you would soon be moved on, but I have camped on various beaches for many years - while fishing. The brother & I regularly pitched a two man tent, either on the beach or in the sand dunes,,,,,,,depending on the weather conditions.

Patrolling rangers would stop for a friendly chat & as they could see we weren't littering, or damaging the environment, there was never a problem.

Dear Uncle Muller,
Hi! How are you and your family ? I hope all of you and your family are well. Everyone here is in the pink of health. I am writing this letter to invite you, Aunt Mary and your children, Nicole and Jane to join us in a camping trip for the coming holidays.
Last week , we were passed by a place that would be a prefect campsite for the camping trip. So, it is in Taman Kawang that is in Papar. The place is not far from your house . It took about one and half an hour to reach there. The campsite is located near a town .We can take a bus ride and took only 20 minute to go to the town. There is a mini market also located in the town. This would be easier for us to buy things if thereâs any shortage of supplies.
The place for the campsite was very perfect. It was very clean and thereâs no rubbish seen along the place. Many greenery tree planted there and makes the place shady and cool with fresh air. It is also a peaceful place where thereâs no sound of noisy to be hear at there. The place is also safe with park rangers that on duty to help us . So, you and Aunt Mary do not need to worry about the childrensâ safety.
It is also equipped with a good and modern facilties. There is a tent for rent. It would cost cheaper if we rent for tent at there. So, we do not need to buy a tent for the camping trip. There is also a wonderful childrenâs playground. The children would most probably enjoy the playground and play until they tired. Toilets and shower rooms also is equipped at there. This would not be a problem to us as they has much facilities at the park.
Last but not least , there are some activities that we can do at the place. We can do trekking in the morning and swimming in the afternoon. It might be an enjoy experience as all of us can see the nature of this place. In the evening, we can do some interesting activities. Such as barbecue and games . Mother has a new recipe that she got from internet for the barbecued lamb. Itâs very delicious and tasty. Nicole and I can bring along with our Uno games to be played at there. We would compete each other to win the game.
Well, I have to stop now. Send my regards to Aunt Mary and your children. Thatâs all for now. Bye!
Your niece,
Serra

Southern Wisconsin tent camping for large groups?

Q. Every year, seniors in my high school go camping for 2 nights and 3 days in Indiana. Its usually about 50-150 people, varies every year. This past year however, they were kicked out of their site for a noise complaint from neighbors. As I am planning camping in May 2011, I would like to find a place in southern Wisconsin: small, affordable for high schoolers, probably not very family-friendly, preferably by a lake, and somewhat lenient on things such as quiet hours, bonfires, and parties. Any suggestions?

First time camping trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. What can I expect?

I am road tripping to the Rocky Mountain National Park, and plan on camping there. So far, Moraine Park seems most appealing. I will be going the very first week of August. How should I prepare as far as clothing, sleeping bags/blankets? How cold/rainy is it usually in early August?
Also, since this is my first time, what should I expect as far as road conditions and driving? Will I have to drive up parts of mountains to get to the site?

Answer
Rocky Mountain National Park has many camping sites. The first week in Aug will be warm but the nights cool off. You will need a tent and moderate sleeping bag. It does rain and there are a lot of animals be prepared and have a place to store you food that is not in your tent. The roads will be great and will enjoy going up the trail route (a road to 12000 ft). for more info look at visitingparks.com/RockyMountain.htm (you can get a park map from there also)

I went camping and rain water leaked into my tent and I let someone else sleep on my cot so my pillow was on the ground. It got really really wet in one corner and that happened to be the corner my pillow was in. How can I dry it and is there a reason it's stained badly on the corner the pillow got wettest?

Answer
just squeeze the water out and hang up somewhere warm to dry. The stain is the dirt that was sucked up with the water or if it stayed wet for a long time it could be mold

best 3-person tents for camping image

bruar02

I don't want anything too heavy or bulky, our apartment is small. We have a two person tent, sierra designs lightning. It's too small for two adults, two smaller dogs and our stuff. I was looking at the mutha hubba 3 person tent, it seems nice but I don't want to outgrow it (what if we have kids) so now I'm thinking about a four person tent.

Answer
Depends on how much you want to spend. You have already mentioned two high priced tents of which are really no better the the colman brands or eureka and kelty brands. All three of these tent makers make quality family size tents that fold up into nice convenient size packages. Of these I recommend the Colman sundome series these are nice three season tents that come with a stay dry guarantee that the other three tent makers don't have. And the prices are a third of those high end tents you mentioned.

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=2000001976&categoryid=11020&brand=

In the high end category where price is no object I recommend the REI base camp 6 it is a really strong three season maybe four season, pending on where your camping, multi pole and full rain fly tent. Room enough to stand up in, yet an aero dynamic design for windy weather. Its highly rated for multi use and great for base camps.

http://www.rei.com/product/777755

Now for the Taj Mahaul of family size tents where room is of the utmost importance and yet the price is still affordable I go back to Colman tents. I prefer the WeatherMaster 10 its their biggest tent and again the stay dry guarantee.

http://www.coleman.com/coleman/ColemanCom/detail.asp?CategoryID=11020&product_id=2000001598

Bottom line you can spend a lot and get just as much if not more for a lot less. so shop around

Where can I get water resistant or water proof tent?

cjware1974

Going camping perfer 2 or 3 person tent, no poles would be great as well. Budget is $200.00

Answer
If you can count on having trees to suspend it from, the GoLite Shangri-La can be used without its included pole. Being a single-pole design, it's pole is not much of a burden. A mesh "nest" is also available to keep out bugs if necessary. But, it's pricey.

A more economical option is the two-pole Eureka Tetragon 7.
