Any ideas? A couple friends and I would like to go camping no further than 3-4 hours away from the Twin Cities without bothering with State Park nonsense, etc... Is this possible? Any stories good or bad? We're planning on next weekend (2nd wknd October) and we'll be bringing everything we need, and are prepared to rough it in a beautiful setting. Thanks ahead of time!

Answer
Northeast of the twin cities is the Chequamegon National Forest

which allows dispersed camping outside of campgrounds. Once you're on federal land you can pretty much camp where you please. Just follow a Forest Service road and you'll probably find a nice campsite right on a lake.

Looking for a campground in northern Minnesota?

I'm looking for a really nice campground for a group of about 30 people with beautiful scenery, swimming, near a lake, and tent camping exclusive. Also not crowded.

Answer
The category of "northern Minnesota" covers an enormous area of at least 6,000 lakes. You should narrow it down a bit. Also, you may be able to break-down your group or rent a group campsite at one of the many beautiful Minnesota State Parks. Forest Service campgrounds have pit toilets and no running water. It sounds like you will have a mixed group of experienced campers, so you will probably want to stay at a more-developed campground.
