Kassy

I'm a light traveler, with only a backpack and I tend to stay in hostels and wherever is cheapest. I'm considering bringing a tent but I'm not sure (any suggestions?) and I'll probably use public transport for most of the way. The basis of the trip is Alaska to Argentina.

I was thinking $2500US a month. But really I have no idea so any suggestions would help.

firstly 'i'm so jealous' good on ya!!
I travelled through Canada and the States. It's so simple to camp in the states and it's cheap. Depending on time of year camping in Canada can be cold but it's def doable. I't's alot more expensive in Canada than the US. There's not alot of hostels in the US which makes it difficult but there are def cheap hotels. The IS is vast so you'll probably be doing alot on the greyhound. We bought a car in Canada for $1500CAD and that took us all over. So much fun and we stopped were we wanted (which made camping easy).
Have fun whatever you!!!

How were the Indian populations different from European societies in the pre-colonia era (1600-1750)?

There's more than one part, so answer thoroughly please.

Answer
Yes it is more than one part.

First off lets start with live stock,

Everyone today relates American Indians with Horses. Well that is a big MYTH. Horses did not arrive in the America's till the Westerners brought them with them.

They also had other animals not common or extinct in Europe such as Buffalo, Beaver. That is a small example of live stock differences.

Farming and growing crops was also different. Corn did not exist in Europe it as a North American crop as was Cotton through out the America's Central, South and North.

Now on a society level there were many differences as well.
In Europe their were cities made of Stone, brick, wood and even the land itself in the highlands for example.

The Native Americans tended to live in small communities and made their homes like tents made of the skin hides of animals. the advantage this had was they could pack up quick and move which they did often. They moved where the Buffalo roamed in much of the Western USA.

When the westerners nearly wiped out the Buffalo they nearly starved the Indians.

Westerners had more of a Governmental society with Kings, Presidents, Czars, Kaisers etc where the natives had chiefs like the West had far back in the days of the Bronze age.

Only in Central America did they unite under one nation, the Maya's, Aztecs and Incas were all more Nations of Natives in Central America and very much more advanced then their brethren further north.

Now not to say they were less intelligent, they just did not see the need for permanent cities and simply had a different belief of life system that most of us cannot understand. They did not understand the meaning of OWNING land and this is how the Westerners suckered in MY opinion the Natives out of millions of acres and what we could not buy cheap the west took by force putting them into Camps in barren lands. (HMMM almost sounds like a concentration camp..except their was no ovens or gas chambers) but they were treated as second class citizens.

Religiously they had a different view than most Westerners. They did not believe in God or Gods bur rather Spirits and the Great spirit. Mother earth was alive as was all living things in nature. A lot like the Ancient druids of the Celts were.

Of course as most Westerners are they forced their beliefs and way's down their throats trying to eradicate their way of life and almost succeeded. Sure some converted willingly but not on mass scale. Most were subjugated and imprisoned onto Reservation land.

Now then they had no rights or such after the Westerns beat them, and in my opinion the lost for THREE main reasons..

1) they had no tolerance to the Westerner small pox and other diseases and died in mass groups.
2) Inferior weapons
3) Most of the Norther American Tribes could not unite to fight a common enemy together and remained divided, had they united they may have booted the West of the continent!

So there is several reason, agriculturally, Live stock, Government, Society life style, belief systems, technological deficiency and too much infighting to be effective.

Sure that is not everything, that is just the icing of the whole story, but I would be writing you a book or thesis to get that involved so I hope this was enough and what you were looking for.

For the record I am both Native American and a Westerner so I have both blood's in me. I still have very strong feeling about my Native side, I do know that in my families case it was a Male Native that married a White woman and that was my great great grandmother. That makes me 1/8 not a lot but it is there and I am proud of it. Seeing they kept no records and kept their traditions orally it is really difficult to trace your families heritage on the Native American side.

I some times wonder what this country would be like had the Natives wiped out Plymouth and Jamestown rather than help them? What would have happened then you think?

The Mayans were said to have predicted their own downfall centuries before it happened and thought Cortes was a God at first which is how he so easily defeated them. Now was it really a true prediction or just a case of making your possible negative life happen for real by believing in it too much, had they executed Cortes and his men immediately rather than follow the ancient tablets foretelling their coming they too may have survived.

I hope that helps you some and I did not write too much or too little. I only answered to try and be helpful because I like the subject
