A place where you can just pop up a small tent and spend the night for very little money or free?
Last time I just "went out and set up a tent" and campsite I was arrested for tresspassing on private property...
Answer
Sure, just go out into the woods and set up a tent. Both State and Federal land doesn't charge for that. They only charge when its an improved camp site aka. campground or park. There are even a few free campgrounds still around. Where I live there is a state owned campground that is free. Its also one of the nicest campgrounds in the area.

Does anyone know any good tent camping places near north east Lake Okeechobee?

All I can seem to find are RV resorts.
Answer
You are really looking at a rather developed place. You may want to try Okee-tantie Recreation Area, Moore Haven Recreation Area, Belle Glade Recreation Area. However, you are not going to find any spacious, remote camping in the area. If you are interested in isolation, then look at National Forests.
Apalachicola, Osceola and Ocala. National Forests, public lands that protect more than 1.2 million acres in North and Central Florida. The National Forests in Florida also manages the 1,400-mile Florida Trail, one of eleven National Scenic Trails in the United States.
