cheap tent camping in michigan image
Sexy Chica
My husband and I are planning a trip to Mackinac Island Michigan. On our way home we would like to do some tent camping with our 2 kids. What are some of the best camping areas in the state of Michigan based on your experience? thanks for your help.
Answer
Straits State Park (lower) is pretty good. I'm not sure about construction on the Bridge, it was down to one lane earlier. Hartwick Pines near Grayling was okay. So were Harrisville and Twas City State Parks. Ludington SP is my preferred, but with 12 inches of rain a few weeks ago, I would call first.
Not to be a smart a%$ but What is meant by "best"? and home? Is this best for the kids, cheapest, best attractions, modern, semi modern, or rustic camping site? And at least which direction or quarter of the State would you consider?
There are State campgrounds that have Teepee's and Yurts which might appeal to the kids. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_24196---,00.html
The State of Michigan tourism website http://michigan.org will have information about camping near most cities. Look under Places to Stay
You can also search by map on the States website http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/parkmap.aspx
Or at http://www.michigandnr.com/ParksandTrails/Default.aspx?SearchType=campgrounds
Campground Experiences can be found

or in a book by Tom Powers (4th edition) or map book by Sportsman's Connection websites are below. Tom gives an honest assessment of each park.

Best campgrounds in Michigan ?
Jerry D
I'm in Grand Rapids and am willing to travel to the right spot.
I'm looking for a good affordable campground with easy access to tubing, fishing, and bike trails. I can tent camp or would like to cabin or bunk camp if the price is right. a place with cheap kayak / canoe rental would be a plus.
thanks!
