Mammoth Cave National Park
From the North: Take Interstate 65 to Exit 53 (Cave City Exit). Turn right onto KY-70. Follow 70/255 as it becomes the Mammoth Cave Parkway in the park. Follow the Mammoth Cave Parkway to the Visitor Center.
From the South: Take Interstate 65 to Exit 48 (Park City Exit). Turn left onto KY-255 and follow 255 as it becomes the Park City Road into the park. Follow Park City Road until it joins the Mammoth Cave Parkway; turn left. Follow the Mammoth Cave Parkway to the Visitor Center.

The park offers camping in three developed campgrounds and in more than a dozen primitive sites in the backcountry and along the Green and Nolin Rivers.

Over 30 miles of the Green and Nolin Rivers trace through the park and offer a wealth of recreational opportunities. Angle for muskellunge, bluegill, catfish, bass, perch, crappie, and other game fish. Canoe the rivers looking for wildlife, springs and river bluffs. Camp on islands or in the floodplain, or by the river at the Houchins Ferry Campground. Cross the Green River on two ferries â Green River Ferry and Houchins Ferry â two of the few operating rural ferries in the nation.

You can reach Houchins Ferry Campground by boat or by car. Houchins Ferry Campground has 12 sites, equipped with picnic tables, fire grates, chemical toilets, fresh water and adjacent picnic shelter. Reservations are not accepted for Houchins Ferry Campground, and it does not accommodate large trailers or RVs; these options are available for Mammoth Cave Campground.

Dangers of Camping at a national park?

Scottie M

I want to camp in the wild like (smokey Mountains) with plenty of supplies, food, water, tent. I have been tent camping in a lot at a national part 1 time but I was only feet from a road, it was fun but not really what I was looking for. What I want to know is how safe is it as far as animals to go out into the woods for a couple day camping trip? Do animals like bears or big cats hunt humans ? Even deep in national parks? Would I need a gun or is it really safe to be unarmed?
Thanks for the information.

First of all, it is illegal to carry any firearm, least of all a handgun, in a National Park. So forget that! If a ranger finds you with one it will be confiscated, and you'll be arrested.

Second, in the eastern United States (I assume that's where you're at, because you mentioned GSMNP), the only large animal that could be a problem is the black bear. And the only time they are dangerous is if they've become trash-can bears, who are used to feeding on garbage, and lost their fear of humans.

I would not worry about it in the back-country campgrounds of most national parks. Bear attacks (even with brown bears) are very rare. That's precisely why they get so much media attention when they do happen.

At Great Smoky Mountains (and many other National Parks), you can only camp legally in established campgrounds. That's not as limiting as it sounds, because there are plenty of back-country sites that you have to hike to.

If you want a situation where you can camp anywhere, you'll have to get into the national forests or similar wild areas.

If you're truly afraid of bears---which, to repeat, you shouldn't be---then I'd recommend traveling a little further north into the Daniel Boone National Forest, in Kentucky. Bears are just getting re-established in the Bluegrass State, and there are only a handful of them known to exist there.
