How do I deal with my bad gas on tomorrow's camping trip?

Usually when I eat new food (AKA camp food) and have a stressful day, I get bad gas. So, when I sleep, I force myself to stay awake so I don't accidentally let slip a fart. I found out that on tomorrow's camping trip, I'm going to be sharing a tent with my crush. What can I do to make sure I don't fart in my sleep?

Go to the store and buy Gas X and take it before bed. It bursts all the bubbles that form in your colon and cause gas and you end up without bubbles, no bubbles, no gas. Leave the soda pop alone as well because it is full of bubbles, they will cause gas. Drink juice or water instead. It won't hurt to take Gas X early in the day if you feel gassy and then again at bedtime to keep the gas bubbles away. This is all I use for gas and it works great for me. They have it in chewable pills (cherry flavor) or peppermint and also have it in liquid. Pills work best when you travel (I like cherry)and they are in foil so easy to slip in the pocket or purse. Give them a try.

How to keep a camping tent clean while camping?

I will purchase a new camping tent for my camping trip. I wonder is there any way to keep the camping tent clean while camping? Actually, I'm a bit of a neat freak.

1. Use a ground cloth, or tarp, under your tent. Not only will this keep the bottom of your tent clean, it will keep the floor of your tent dry. Just be sure to tuck the edges of the tarp under the tent so that it does not catch rain.

2. Never wear your shoes inside the tent. When you enter your tent, sit in the doorway and remove your shoes, then place them on a floor mat, rug or towel near the door way. You can even leave them outside by tucking them between the tent and the ground cloth.

3. Bring a Ziploc bag for trash to keep the inside of your tent clean. Don't litter inside your tent--especially with candy and food wrappers which can attract bugs or larger, furrier nuisances. Better yet, throw your trash away in an animal-proof trash can outside of your tent.

4. Pack a whisk broom and dust pan to keep your tent clean. These even come in small, easy to pack camp sizes. Sweep the grit out of your tent every day, and once again before packing it.

5. Never store a wet and dirty tent. If you have to strike camp in the rain or even a heavy morning dew, be sure to pitch your tent again at home to dry. You can pitch it in the sun, a garage or porch. You can even dry it by hanging on a clothes line or over a fence. Clean any stains. If your tent goes into storage wet and dirty, it will come out stinky, sticky and moldy for your next camping trip.

How much does tent camping cost at campsites?

I want to go to Ft. Davis, Texas to see stars at some point in the future. But I don't know if camping would be cheaper than getting a hotel. Or if you can see the stars are different camp sites or what.

But the point is, I've never gone camping. So how much do campsites generally cost?

Fees depend on amenities, location, time of year, and whether it is private or publicly owned.

Generally speaking:
tent sites with no amenities run free-$10/night
State parks with a bathhouse and water run $5-15/night
State parks with electric hookups, water, and bathhouse run $15-30
Private full ameniy places are usually $20-40++

Keep in mind that you'll probably need some equipment that will run a couple hundred or more for a decent tent, bag, sleeping pad, a camp kitchen. If you plan on doing this alot, invest in the best.

The bottom line is that going camping for only a few days is more expensive than a cheap hotel if you never plan on going again. But, once you invest in some long lasting gear, you'll be able to camp for about 25% of the motel costs, stay in better locations, and enjoy the autonomy and adventure of the outside.

Also, you'll save money on food if you cook at the camp rather that dine out like you'd have to with a motel.

How uncomfortable could tent camping be at the Grand Canyon's south rim be in mid November?

Weather forecasts are clear and sunny to partly sunny ranging from 9-56 degrees Fahrenheit with no severe wind. I've never been camping in cold weather with a 5 and 3 year old. Been told that the GC is beautiful in fall. Any advice?

This isn't really a GCNP question; it's more of a sleeping in a tent in really cold weather at 7000' question
If you're sleeping outside once you get below around 25 F you are dealing with a new world that has new rules and new strategies to deal with such as:
Peeing before you go to sleep b/c sleeping with a full bladder will drop your core temp
Sleeping with your boots inside of your sleeping bag
If you put bottles of warm water inside of a wool sock and then inside of your boots.you will have a pre-warmed sleeping bag and liquid water in the AM
Make 100% sure that the bottles don't leak
Sleeping with your mini -flashlight and digital camera inside of your sleeping bag b/c batteries die real quickly as the temp drops
Not using any kind of air mattress under you b/c the convective property of air will rob you of heat :Use closed cell foam instead
In cold weather I normally sleep in poly-pro long johns ,a wool beanie and wool fingerless gloves ..and then i graze on hi-calorie food during the night
I once came within 400' of literally dying of hypothermia while hiking the White Mountains of NH...so I take hypothermia seriously
I'm a big strong person with huge amounts of energy reserves ...and still I almost died within sight of safety
However if I was a 3 or a 5 year old child I of course wouldn't have anywhere near those kind of reserves and if I was the parent of those children I would be very aware of how easy it would be for their core temps to drop and how hard it would be to get those temps back up to where they need to be
Just so you know there is a clinic in GCNP But the nearest hospital is in Flagstaff which is at least an overland hour away
Speaking of Flag ,Peace Surplus will rent you zero degree bags.Since you're not going to be carrying them weight is not an issue so save the money and get a synthetic bag or two

Im going tent camping and there is plently to do during the day but what should we do at night besides sitting around the fire? Also if you could make me a camping checklist i would apreciate it! Thanks!

Will you be "family" camping or primitive camping with friends? My group usually brings a few different beverages and a variety of food. At night we sit around the bomb fire and share stories, laugh, and play drinking games. During the day we go canoeing on the river for about 4-5 hrs and that typically exhaustes us to just relax at night. If your going primitive camping its important to bring the essintals b/c you DEF need them. Depending on the type of camping you'll be doing will depend on what you'll need. Here just a few items I can think of:

Tent
Tarp
Stakes (if not included w/ tent)
Flashlight/ Lantern- wick- kerosine
Stakes Hammer
Camping knife
Water- LOTS
Food
Portable Grill or Stove
Utinesils/Plates
Trash bags/ Toilet Paper (if no bathrooms are provided)
Water Sealant for tent
Cooler
Radio
Matches/Lighter
Wood (usually can be bought from the camp site)

How much would it cost to spend 2 months camping?

We'll have $1,500 a month and $400 a month for food.
Our monthly going out would be $110 for phones, $157 for our truck, $63 for insurance, plus diapers, wipes and dog food, so about $100.

We plan on staying about 5-7 days in each location, and one of those weeks we'll be staying for free at someone's house.

We're considering buying a cab over camper, it'll be slightly easier than tent camping, but I think it'll be more expensive.

We'll be bringing bikes, so when we stop we won't be driving a ton.

Our main ideas are the grand canyon, Carlsbad caverns, white sands, Roswell, etc.

Does this sound possible with our income?

$1900 per month should do you just fine. People have made that tour on a whole lot less. Assuming your vehicle is in good shape. It's getting hot out there though. Carry lots of water.

Grand Canyon is going to cost you some. I have heard that they don't even allow cars at the South rim any more, gotta park outside and get bused in. Check on that and be prepared.
White Sands and Roswell won't cost much and I assume Roswell has camping.

You should be able to do all that with the resources you have. I wouldn't do the RV thing, it costs a lot to park them and they require lots of maintenance (and fuel). Use tents.

My children and I have been tent camping regularly in National Forest areas and I would like to continue, but the recent bear attack on the poor boy in Utah has me thinking twice. I do not own a gun and so far have just followed the no food in camp rule as a precaution. What can I do to protect myself and my children other than not going?

I can't do the hot dogs and hamburgers anymore. We are going on a 4 day tent camping trip next week. I am looking for food to prepare before we go. Like pasta salads to just eat . I also want to make the food ahead of time that I can cook while there. ideas? Just no hot dogs or hamburgers please. Thank you.

for camping trips I used to collect stuff to take that would be easy to prepare.

I made bisquick type blend for biscuits, pancakes, etc that just need water added.
Steaks and bacon or sausage for meats
fresh fruits and veggies travel best.
I even took one Cheesecake birthday cake one year!!

My kids were in elementary school the last long campout we had. So there were lots of hotdogs which I don't particularly like. No ground beef stuff as it is more mess than I wanted to do.

Prepare your pasta and put in ziplock bags in the chill box along with dressings for your salad. Don't put the dressing on the pasta until ready to eat. The pasta has a nasty habit of absorbing it.
Chop fruits and veggies and ziplock them
Soup can be prepared and ziplocked so it only has to be heated.
hardboil a dozen or so eggs and peel, zip lock them

fresh eggs can be cracked into ziplock bags also, then just pour each out separately into skillet for breakfast.

Looking for primitive campsites in the Ft Lauderdale / Miami area?

My friend is heading down to Miami and wanted to find some good campsites. Tent camping........
Waking up to the sound and sight's of the beach at sunrise with some coffee would be great ! Really open to all in the area, but one can dream can't he :)
Specific info on the location or name of the park would be great.
About 1 hour in any direction from Ft Lauderdale is what he's after.
