Where can I go REAL camping in So California?

My favorite camp area (Kern River) became all permit regulated (fire rings, picnic benches, parking spaces- lame!). It seems every campground is like this now.

I want to find somewhere BEAUTIFUL where my family and I can have a huge campfire and rough it and not be limited to a small area next to other campers. Does this exist?

I'm not looking for extreme danger or total isolation, I just don't like lighting a tiny fire in a "ring" and turning my music off at 9pm, while hearing kids crying from a tent 20 feet away at another "reserved" campsite. I understand why regulation is necessary for the preservation of the forests and beaches. I just want to see if there's a less restrictive way to camp.

You can head up river, still a lot of pullout spots along the kern above Lake Isabella. And furthor out on Sherman pass road there is a lot of dispersed camping allowed.

Your to late to reserve anything for the 4th of july, those great sites were booked 3 months ago. That leaves first come sites. You want water and nearby hiking and few restrictions go north to the kern river above lake isabella. there are many first come sites along the river, however few services are available maybe porta toilets no showers, however you got the river. Your best chances of finding a good spot along the river is to leave home wednesday and get there quick, snooze you lose. Goldledge is a good first come campground with nearby trails that go up into higher country.$20 a night,

Campfire permits are required when camping in these areas and reservations are not accepted. However, camping and the use of campfires are not permitted within 25 feet of the river's edge, streams or trails. Chemical toilets and trash receptacles are provided in most of these areas for your convenience. In areas that do not provide these services, PACK OUT WHAT YOU PACK IN. Especially, diapers, toilet paper, and human waste.

There are thousands of campgrounds that fit the bill, For what you want to do I recommend Hobo Campground on the kern river. Just a short hike down stream is a hot spring you can soak in and fish the river from at the same time. Enjoy

The Uinta Basin is very nice, and very few areas in the US can compare. I really do not understand what you mean by âbetterâ?

The Mighty High Sierra Nevada Mountain range is much larger. Unlike the Uinta Mountains, the Sierras run north and south. This creates mountains which are more extreme and more variety.

The west side of the Sierras pulls water from the ocean. The snow is the densest in the world. In fact, throughout the world, the snow is called âCaliforniaâs Sierra Cementâ. You do not get nearly as many tourist or ski traffic, because the snow is very heavy. Utah snow is like powder, better to ski.

The altitude and the massive amounts of water create thousands of giant Redwood trees, waterfalls, and lakes. The Redwood Trees are the biggest and oldest living things on earth. The size of the area is also about three (3) times larger than the Uinta Mountain Range. Yosemite Falls is the highest waterfall in North America. Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the USA. The lake is pure, unpolluted, and beautiful. And finally, Mount Whitney is the second tallest peak in the USA. I patch my tent near Mt. Whitney.

The east side of the Mighty Sierra Nevada Mountain Range is completely different. This is what I mean by extreme and more variety. Near the base sits Death Valley. Death Valley is the lowest point (below sea level) and the hottest place in North America. I love the eastern side because it has far less people and no children because the terrain is much rougher. The Eastern side is just as beautiful, higher mountain tops, and more lakes. As per you question, the temperatures are much milder.

I have hiked the John Muir trail twice. I was only seventeen (17) and in high school my first trip. There were five of us. We spent the summer living off the land. The year was 1961. I think we saw five other people while hiking and camping for 200 miles. We ate a lot of rice, coffee, beef Jerky, and caught âGOLDEN TROUTâ. By the way, Bob the Fish, âwhat type of fish are you? Are you a Golden troutâ (smile)?? No, only in the Mighty High Sierra Nevadaâs in California.

My second trip on the John Muir Trail was a year after returning from Vietnam. This was by far my best trip. Back then we would catch huge Golden Trout. The high altitudes and rough terrain make them fighters.

Today I hit the Eastern Sierras at least once a year. I know all the great camping and fishing lakes. I am a little too old to hike the John Muir Trail, but I will always have great memories. I hope you will someday get an opportunity to hike the John Muir. It is something to see.

Today, my favorite lake is Bull Frog Lake which is eight (8) miles back in the Sierras through Kearsarge Pass, an old Indian trail. I also spend a lot of time on the Kern River which also flows out of the southern tip of the Mighty Sierra Nevada Mountains. That is another story.

Any suggestions on where to camp in California?

My family and I are looking for a great place to camp in California. We love being surrounded by redwoods, but would like to stay near central California (close to where we live). Yosemite is booked and we have stayed at the KOA in Santa Cruz and liked it. Does anyone have any other suggestions on great places for a family with young children?

I hope you are having a great day. AJ, it is very hard to pick out a good location if I do not know what type camping you mean? Do you like tent, cabin, or sleeping bags? I like rough areas with fly fishing and hiking. I made three (3) trips last year into the Mighty High Sierras Mountains. I usually hike over Kearsarge Pass, which is an old Indian trail, to Bull Frog at 10,000 feet. I have been camping and hiking the Sierras since 1958.

I remember as kids we would lie in our sleeping bags and count shooting stars all night. Your mind would run amok with the wonders and vastness of space. You could point out and view constellations which until then were part of chapters in a school text book. We would fall asleep viewing the heavens and our own Milky Way.

Some of my best camping trips were with my family as a kid in Yosemite. We could not wait to see the fire falls at night (website below). I feel so sorry for people like you and your family, especially the kids. The fire falls stopped in 1968. Today, you must have an appointment for two years in advance to get a camping spot. The crowds are unbelievable, times change.

My favorite camping locations are along the Kern River. I can always find a good location because I know the area like the back of my hand. The camping can be mild to rough. I have included websites with phone numbers. On the first website, click on Hospital Flat and Camp 3. Both sites are right next to slow moving riverâ¦.great areas for kids.

It's gonna be that way for any reservable water front camping in southern california. There are a few places that are close to water with in about 10 miles that are first come first served and a few first come first severed sites on some creeks and rivers. Look up the national forests we have and check the campground listings for these. A couple of my favorites are South fork on the Santa ana river and Sandy Flat on the Kern river

There are several hundred lakes that fit that description it would help if you were to narrow down to the where abouts that you can get to. Spring everything water wise will still be on the cold side. So how about a hot spring? The Kern river area near Lake isabella is good for fishing hiking and with a wet suit river rafting my favorite spot along the river is right near this hot spring.

What is your opinion on any campground in CA?

I'm new to CA's state and national parks campgrounds. Looking for any reviews, INFO or wedsites on tent camping in CA.

I'm minimalist and a naturalist, that likes to bring only the basics, what do I need to bring?

That is great!!
Camping on the rocky beaches along the coast between LA and San Francisco is a great memory for me. We would pull mussels off of the rocks toss them onto the grill... Yummmmy.
We also did a lot of camping in the Big Bear Mountains. You can get an off road permit from the park ranger's main office.
There are many streams and Big Bear Lake.
I am envious.... I will get back one day.....
