Where is the best camp site in Western Massachusetts/Southern Vermont/ Southern or Eastern New York area?

I am looking to go camping for the first time, the only requirments I want are a good place to pitch a tent and a lake/river/any type of body of water.

What is the best camp grounds?

Try Lake St. Catherine State Park in Poultney, Vermont. It's about 50 miles up the west side of the state. The sites are big and level. The showers and bathrooms are clean. And the Lake is a short walk from all of the sites.

There a lots of state parks in Vermont with camping. Groton State Park in particular in Groton is very nice with lots of camping options, some right on lakes.

I have a camping question about Lean-To's?

I am thinking of go camping Memorial Day Weekend in Vermont. I saw on some campsites that have Lean-To's. I was wondering what lean to's are meant for and is it possible to set up a tent underneath it. THe weekend I am going it looks like it might rain. THank you for your help.

in new england lean to's are pretty common, especially on the AT and vermont long trail. i have also seen them in state parks... while they vary in size, they are all basically little cabins with one wall missing. they have water proof roofs, so the rain protection is better than a tent, plus they are roomy. you can stand up in most of them, walk around. they are off the ground so you aren't sleeping in the dirt, and they offer some wind protection. (only 3 sides...) with a little bit of creativity you can set a small tent up in one (i have done it before on really cold nights... -0) but for the most part i find it not to be necessary and most places frown on the practice anyway.

overall if i was out on a wet weekend i would choose a lean to over a tent any day.

the long trail starts in N.Adams and runs north into Vermont,if you are hiking.there is also a campground in the state forest along Route 2 near thereD.A.R. has one too,check the state parks and campground guide for that area available at visitors center.Department Of recreation and conservation has listings too.

Well, if you haven't totally mastered winter camping yet I'd try the Adirondak Loj (yes, that's spelled correctly) near Lake Placid. They have campsites and lean-tos all year and the Loj and High Peaks Center are open if you need a place to warm up or crash (for a fee). If the weather is too bad it's a short drive into town for a hotel.

If you like to backpack, then try any of the cabins on the Long Trail in VT or the huts in the Whites. We hiked a flat 7 miles into Zealand Hut a few years back. There was a cheaper winter rate at the huts..not the extortion rates of the summer. Pitch a tent outside and if the weather is wicked...opt for the hut. I often went to Spuce Peak Cabin in VT between Bromley and Stratton on the LT. It's free. Again, you can camp outside or duck in the cabin if the snow starts falling too much for your taste.

If you have mastered the winter camping arts and want a challenge, then pick up a guidebook for just about any place and go for it.

I always hike in, so my idea of good places may be skewed towards backpacking, but here are some I like.

Moosalamoo/Silver Lake in Vermont; Stratton Pond in VT; Marcy Dam shelters in the High Peaks of NY; Anywhere on the Loyalsock Trail in PA; Putnam Pond area near Lake George is nice too...lots of shelters and campsites to choose from. Great for a weekend snowshoe loop hike.

If you really want wild, then try the wilderness areas in the Green Mountain or White Mountain National Forests...just leave a note with the rangers so they know where to look for your body in the event you don't come back.

What makes a tent waterproof? and how to know if one is?

I got tent and sprayed with waterproofing. Used it yesterday during the rain and had to put a tarp over it to keep the water from seeping through the top. So I'm looking for a new one thats really rain proof, any suggestions?

A self-supporting tent (like a dome tent) with a full rainfly should keep you relatively dry. I have a Eureka Aspen, a Eureka Apex, and a Big Agnes Seedhouse 3. I NEVER get wet. The Aspen is my primary tent. It has seen hailstorms in the Rockies, torrential downpours in the Adirondacks, and wet sloppy snow in Vermont.

Taped seams are the best, but you can always get seam sealer at the camping supply store closest to you. If you are buying your camping gear at Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Sears, etc...expect to get something less than quality. Go to a REAL gear store and look at the tents. Eureka tents are the best tents if you have a tight budget. You can pick up an Apex at Campmor for about $89. A good MountainHardwear or Marmot tent will set you back a couple hundred bucks.

Also...these are all lighter backpacking style tents. If you are looking for something that you can set a cot and chairs in, then you are really going to pay big bucks for a good tent. A Kelty Trail Dome 6 person tent goes for about $350 (I think) and better tents are more expensive than that. You can pick up a 6 person cabin tent at K-Mart for $150...and you will get wet.

Make sure your tent is tight. That is what keeps the tent from dripping. Use a groundcloth. I put mine inside the tent, some people put it under the tent or they use a pre-fab footprint to keep the groundwater and condensation out.

Also...one drip doesn't mean the tent is leaking. Condensation can easily build on the inside of the tent. If the temperature and dew point are equal, count on water clinging to the ceiling. Chances are it will drip on you. All of my tents have a roof screen. Moisture travels out through the screen and condenses on the fly. When it runs down the fly, it lands OUTSIDE my tent. If my tent had a solid ceiling it would roll down the INSIDE of my tent and I would get wet.

Also...follow all of the other advise already posted. It's all pretty helpful.

Is it hard to learn how to climb mountains?

Find some people to hook up with. Either book in to a camp site in the mountains or find an organized hiking group.
Most towns have hiking clubs. Check your local library for info. Those clubs normally have a few trips to mountain areas if any are within reasonable distance.
Then you just get some boots, a pack, waterproofs if needed, warm clothes for chilly mountain air, take some food and drink, a big smile and an adventurous spirit and off you go.
Learn as you go along and keep it up. The more you do the easier it gets.
Good info from both of us on here about safety, and the romance of the call of the wild places on mine.

My daughter camps in mountains. She's got a spinal njury and lives in a wheelchair.. Can't walk. Still goes camping on mountains though.
Rides a handcycle to get there and puts the tent up herself.
Thousands of people with injuries get onto mountains. So don't worry. It isn't beyond most people to do it, just that most people don't want to do it.
Just for the flavor of what it's like for a tough hike up a steep hill, and for inspiration cos the guy's partner has an injury, see this.
If you manage to read right through it you'll get the difference between doing and not doing, ways to think, and of course most folks don't do it at all.. Also a little bit about reading a map...just a bit.
It's nowhere near you unless you're near the Lake District in UK. but it's the same if you're going up a steep hill in Colorado or Vermont or the Western Ghats in India.
Up is up everywhere. So is an adventuring spirit. Have a great time...it's a good way to live.

When you are used to hills like that, you've got your walking legs sorted and know how to move, how to stay safe, how to find your way, then you can tackle higher ones.
The higher you go the colder it gets on most mountains. It looks great from the valley bathed in glorious sunshine up there but the reality when you get there can be a lot different.
It's freezing. It's blowing a gale, and you'll be glad of a high rock to shelter behind and get your breath back.But the joy of being there, the view from the top, the exhilaration of having done it, far outweigh the aches and pains of getting there and the conditions you're in at the top.
If you want to get into technical stuff with ropes and harnesses, pitons, ice axes, and crampons on your boots, there are lots of groups you can go with, and lots of courses that cost a lot of money.
If you want it, you'll find a way to do it within your budget, or do some of it at least.
You'll be living the dream, if only in a fairly modest way compared to some, and you'll find a lot of help and companionship amongst walkers and climbers.
It's a great community, all over the world.
