It depends on what kind of tented camp you go to. I lived in Kenya for 6 years and every time we went out to a game reserve we stayed in a "luxury tent camp." It's basically a big tent, really nice beds (queen, single, double... you choose). Very nice bathrooms with tile, marble sinks... just really nice. Great service to. The best one was at the Masai Mara (spelling?). It was called Intrepids or something like that. Very nice, great service. Relatively cheap. If you watched Survivor Africa a few years back, it's the camp they stayed in for one of the rewards.

On the flip side, they have some camps that are dirt cheap that REALLY suck.

Either way, be careful.

Here is some tips to hlep removing that awful mildew stench.
1)Fill the tote with pine-sol and water.Once the tote is full and the pine-sol is added in place of the tent in the water piece by piece.Place all tent and materials in individually including:tent,rain fly,tent poles,stakes,tent bag,and stake bag.
2)Let the tent and its contents soak in the pine-sol solution for an hour or so,ensuring that the tent has had time to absorb the aroma of the pine-sol solution to be a fresh smelling tent.
3)Wring it out to get out the access water.Reassemble the tent in your yard.Spay the tent off with a water hose making sure it is thoroughly rinsed.
4)Let the tent air dry.Make sure that the tent and all the contents are fully dry before you pack it back up.If the tent is still wet you will encounter the same problem and the mildew will return.
5)In the winter or on rainy occasions you can dry the tent in a garage or even inside your home or basement.Sometimes you must seek drying the tent inside.Following these proper care instructions for a tent and keeping it clean will ensure a longer future for the material.

Does coleman or any more respected tent makers offer an already waterproofed tent to withstand multi-hour downpours?

I'm sure that Coleman is like the Huffy/Murray of camping gear, so any camping pros out there please let me know whom for to be looking.
Already got reservations, thanks. Had a great old tent heirloomed, lent it to a friend who lent it to a friend... Now we realize that we need a new one and dropping a half thousand on one that we plan on using twice a year is tough right now. The coleman that she got has a way-too-small fly and seems as waterproof as my tee shirts. She's returning it as soon as it dries out. How are Eureka brand tents? Worth buying, seam-sealing and fly-sealing?

There is no tent that is completely "waterproof". Coleman is a leader in family camping tent gear and their products are treated and seams factory sealed for weather protection so they have a "weather protection guarantee" but that is vague at best. Any tent for it to have good resistance to the weather must be set up correctly and all seams sealed and the material rated or coated with water resistance material. I find that higher end tents have better designs for weather protection and dome style tents the best overall design. Again Coleman meets that need. Now you stated you are interested in beach camping. First if you don't have reservations now forget it all beach camping in the state of california is by reservation only 6 months in advance. Next beaches are naturally humid and tents are always damp inside and out in any weather situation specially at night . To help with that you need a tent with very good ventilation. Again Coleman tents meet that need.

@Eureka is no different than Coleman except for tent designs they use the same comparable materials and methods of construction or weather proofing, it's comparing apples to oranges

The best are made by a company called The North Face, but can be quite expensive. We camp all the time, and have a Coleman family tent, an Ozark Trail tent (from Wal-mart, I think made by Coleman), and an REI back-packer's 2-man tent. If you have any sporting goods store nearby (Bass Pro Shop has an excellent assortment), go in and talk to a sales person. Keep in mind that the size of the tent (how many people it sleeps) is a very crowded fit. For 4 people to be comfy, with duffelbags inside, you really need an 8-person tent. Keep in mind, too, seasonality, the type of material the floor is made of (you don't want it to tear if you have to put it up on a gravel or rocky area), and weight.

The best place to purchase a tent, if you are looking for a quality tent, is a store that has an actual "camping" department. Stay about from the big box department stores such as Walmart, K Mart, Target.

When you enter the department, look for name brand tents: Eureka, Coleman, Kelty, Marmot, The North Face. Stay away from "store brands". These are NOT made to the same quality standards as the name brand tents. Store brands are okay for the occasional camper who might not care about having to replace the tent in a few short years.

Select a tent that is easy to set up. A dome tent is much easier to set up than a cabin style tent whether you are a novice or an experienced camper. Since you are asking a question as to where to purchase a tent, I would have to guess you are a novice.

A dome tent will be rounded, much like a dome. A cabin tent will be shaped more like a box. The photos on the packaging will guide you as well as the description of the tent.

If you are just driving to a camp ground to set up the tent for a weekend or so, select a tent that is rated to hold more people than you actually plan on having in the tent. You will appreciate the extra interior space to store some of your belongings and in case of inclement weather that forces you to spend additional time in the tent.

Concerning "weather", also select a tent that has the largest rain fly that goes over the tent. The rain fly is made of waterproof material and is designed to shed the rain from the roof and, hopefully, sides of the tent. A full coverage rain fly is the best.

If and when you have questions on the tents, and you probably will, ask to talk to the most knowledgable camping associate in the store. Not everyone working in the store, or even near that area, will be extremely knowledgable on camping.

If the person is indeed an "expert", they will ask you numerous questions concerning your intended purchase. Such as: number of campers, type of camping you will be doing, length of trip or trips, how often will it be used, and finally what price range you had in mind. A good and knowledgable salesperson will suggest a tent that will fit your needs near the price you are looking to spend, not necessarily the most expensive one that they have to offer.

If there is space available in the store, ask if you can take the tent out of the box and set it up, or watch it being set up, so you can really see how easy or difficult it is as well as get in the tent to check it for space and interior features. I am new to tent camping and need help. How do you use an electrical hookup in a campground?

I am going to camp in a Yogi Bear campground in a site that says "Water and Electrical Hookup". Does that mean I can use an extension cord with a strip on the end of it that has plugs in it?
I can find lots of info on tent camping on the internet, but nothing that explains electrical hookup. I'm a single mom. I hope I can find a veteran camper who can help me with my camping questions.

Typically, "Water and Electrical Hookups" are referring to convenient places an RV or trailer can plug in to for power and running water. Chances are, you should be able to plug an extension cord with a power strip for running some electrical items.

I say plan your trip as if the electrical won't be available, but bring a few things that will be helpful in case it is.

A few helpful camping tips:
If there's a firepit, bring a couple Duraflame logs. They last a couple hours, don't take any special gymnastics to ignite, and you can always throw regular wood on after the duraflame is burning. Remember to smother your campfire before you go to bed (Shovel dirt on it, etc).

Bring a stiff rake. Rake out the spot where you're putting your tent(s). This way, you don't end up rolling over onto a rock or acorn.

Please, please, PLEASE, clean up when you're gone. Have your kids walk all over your campsite and pick up every little bit of trash possible. (Also, bring trashbags! Not all campsites have convenient trash receptacles).

Check the temperature ranges in advance, and pack accordingly. It's a very long night when it's freezing cold and you didn't bring the winter sleeping bags. Remember that tents catch fire VERY easily, so don't put the tent next to the campfire, and don't bring electrical or gas heaters into the tent.

Bring fresh drinking water. (Those 2.5 gallon jugs with the convenient spigot are good...)

Bring a medical kit w/ all the usual refinements. Kids will always find a way to get boo-boo's.

I can almost guarantee that you will certainly overpack for your first trip. You'll find that over time you'll be able to whittle it down to the stuff you *really* need, as opposed to the stuff you think you'll need.

If you're with someone who is not a morning person, they will be much worse in the morning. Trust me.

Traveling the GR 5 from Les Houches to Briancon. Can I tent camp the entire way. I believe I have seen that you can camp anywhere above tree line.

Alpine camping is best. Pack out waste including feces and urine.
Avoid avalanche chutes, rockfall, but bivy slung between two knobs
amid vertical cliff is fine if you sleep wearing fall-arrest harness fixed
to something that probably can't be pulled away by accident. This
may work for reader on GR5 bridges at mid-span; just hang below
likely exit location of traffic hurtling past to destruction below.
