camping in hampton roads Virginia area?

does anybody out here in VA know where I can rent or buy cheap camp gear...and where we can go camping out here? Also what will we need for camping etc..trying to plan a camping trip for the summer by myself cause josh wants no part of camping but he said if I planned it alone and got everything he'll actually go. I think he expects me to fail so please help lol

Camping is all in what you make it. You can take as much or little as you want.if you want cheap camping gear, go to walmart. they will be cheaper than what you would get over at dicks sporting goods. you will need a tent of some sort. one could be picked up for 20-50dollars depending on what you want. a stove is important. the small butane stoves range from 20-50 dollars. you could take blankets from home and not need a sleeping bag. be sure to bring along a fire starter(waterproof matches , lighter, flint& steel) . I would recommend at least two firestarters ; lighter and matches, the flint and steel takes practice to master, but would really impress josh. I would suggest taking a fishing pole , skillet and cooking oil too , to really get the whole experience. catch a few fish and cook them up for dinner. take lemon pepper for seasoning to make a gourmet meal. (clean your fish, put him in aluminum foil , spread butter on top, sprinkle on lemon pepper , wrap up foil, cook over fire until fish is flakey. you now have yourself a meal fit for a king. I cant tell you how long to cook the fish , depending on how hot you have your fire. There is a campground in suffolk called davis lakes and campground. it has fishing , and is about 10 minutes from the dismal swamp. you may also want to take along a lantern for night time activities.

Free (or cheap!) campsites near Virginia Beach?

There is no place like that in Virginia beach. The Virginia beach police are very strict about vagrancy. So if you don't have the money for a hotel room or place to stay with friends don't go there.

i am going camping in west virginia and just purchased a eureka one man tent for about $150, what is a footprint and would you recomend one?

The footprint is the modern version of a ground cloth or tarp. In the "old days" (I still use one), campers use to just plop down a ground cloth and then put the tent over the top. Nowadays they have manufactured ground clothes that are the exact shape of the tent floor and clip into the tent itself.

A ground cloth or a footprint can extend the life of your tent by protecting the floor from direct contact with ground by keeping it clean and preventing punctures.

I don't personally use footprints...I use a ground cloth. It's much cheaper and almost as convenient. I one of those high end "space blankets" (not the mylar emergency ones) and have the reflective surface up to reflect any body heat back.

I would like to camp in a tent but also if good cabin prices would be nice too. I'd like some advice of some fun places to go. I'd like to stay about 3-5 days and so would need showers. And I'd like to be near water with places to hike or things to do. Help would be nice :) Thank you.

Ok free camping is called dispersed or boondock camping and unless you bring a bathroom with you there won't be any. National forests allow free dispersed camping, some sites are accessible by car most you have to hike in to.

"Cheap" campsites come next, these are forest service campsites that have little to no features and may only have a pit toilet at best, prices vary by demand but are usually around $10-$20 a night. Also listed on the above web site

Next would be full service campgrounds where if you had an RV you could roll right up hook in your RV to water sewer and electric and have all the comforts of home. Again these sites vary by demand and could be as low as $20 or as high as $200 or more per night depending on private or public operation and available amenities. http://woodalls.com/ lists all that there is.

Last is Cabin rental now some forests have government owned cabins you can rent for low cost anywhere from $50 to again several hundred based on location and demand these would be listed under the same category as the campground info of the forest service web sites. Private ownership cabins are easy to yahoo search for and prices again very all the way into the thousands.

Best place to go tent camping right now?

I live in northern illinois and i'm just tired of the cold weather. I don't have a lot of money but I just need to go somewhere warm. Camping is cheaper than staying at a hotel and I do love nature and away from everyday noise. can someone please give me some input. thanks!

Go tent camping on the beach, if you can make the drive. I took a roadtrip from Iowa to North Carolina with some friends in March years ago and we camped on the beach. It was a campsite on the North Carolina/South Carolina border. I don't remember the name offhand.

I've also camped on Assateague Island in Maryland/Virginia. Another beautiful place. Camping on the beach is great.

If you can't go far, look into somewhere further south. Arkansas has some beautiful outdoor spots. But, really, anywhere south will be fine. It all depends on how far you can go and how much you can spend.

Women were still mostly expected to not get involved and many of the earliest Gold Camps were all male domains. When women did get involved they did the grudge work: washing clothes and cooking and cooking during that era was labor intensive. In the crudest of camps one pot meals were the norm that meant one big pot, lots of water and the women or men would chop up meat and limited veggies (mostly potato and parsnips and turnips) into a cast iron pot and boil it all. The other use for the few women in camp was for sex an activity out of fashion in 2010 but back then it was recognized as a normal human function.

Okay, I am a broke college student who is trying to have a good time for spring break but not spend too much money. Me and 3 of my friends are looking to stay at a camp site. We are from NJ and are looking to stay at either Southern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, or even Virginia (Northern). Can someone help me out with a safe, fun, cool place???

i don't know much about camp sites around those areas, but the average of what i've seen from the east cost to the west cost, Maine to Alaska, its about $15 a night

All the state parks are pretty nice but expensive. You don't say what style of camping you are doing. Tent, camper, backpacking? Hocking hills is very nice. Any of the reservoirs (Burr Oak, Seneca lake) have camping. Over in your part of the state you are not too far from Ohio Power rec area. Good fishing and cheap camping there, if you are into that sort of thing. You can get a free permit on line. These people may be a corp. but they have the cheapest camping in Ohio. Look around their pages. Here is a link to apply for a permit. http://www.aep.com/environmental/recreation/recland/permit.aspx But West Virginia is very nice, if you want to go that far. Spruce Knob area.

Hi,
It might not be practical to find a cheap used camper trailer in only a few days, but you can meet your goal of going camping this weekend! I'd like to suggest that you consider purchasing a tent and some air mattresses for this weekend, this is a goal that you can meet fairly easily. If you don't already have sleeping bags, add those to your list. Even when you move up to your actual goal to purchase a cheap used camper trailer, the sleeping bags will come in handy. I've listed a few camper articles for you to look at, the first is regarding buying a camper at the eBay auction site, the second on the camper re-po market. It would be best for you and your family if you wrote out the features that you will need. For example, what is the tow capacity of the vehicle you will use to pull your camper trailer? You'll need to consider that the camper itself will only be a percentage (maybe 60%?) of the overall weight you'll tow, as most people load the trailer prior to pulling it. You'll also need to decide if you want your toilet an sink in the camper or you'll be roughing it, and how many beds you'll need. So I'd like to suggest that you go ahead and go camping this weekend, but take the time you''' need to properly select a unit.
