Taking cats to Tent camping?
Hello, I"m thinking of taking my two cats to tent camping this summer. I bought a couple of feline fun house but I am thinking they will be bored to stay in there for seven days all day all night and thinking of getting a leash system (is that how you call it?) like for dogs. Last year when I took one of the cats I improvised something from the things I found from Walmart, but my cat go all around the polls and table legs and got all tangled up. I wonder if I had a wrong kind of leash (it was really thin). I also wonder if there is a better way to set it up so that we can allow the cats maximum movement. I often see a dog on a leash and the dog can move a lot of distance. I wonder how to make that kind of setup. Any suggestions?

I'm not looking to find friends to take care of the cats -- so that's not an option. Thanks for your help!

I want to hear from people who actually went camping with their cats and were successful.
The campsite we go to is usually very crowded and wild animals dare not get close to the campers.
You know all these "cat lovers" if you don't have anything helpful to say why bother to "preach" me what to do with our cats who are treated so well generally more so than y'all strange people.

Cats are smart creatures they come back even if they run away. Actually that's what happened last year when we went to camping -- our cat escaped from our tent, came back the next day. I'm not too concerned about cats being eaten by wild animals or the other dogs who aren't allowed on campsites without leash. Get frackin' out of my way if all you want to do is preach me some stupid stuff you don't even know what you are talking about. My cats are leash trained (to walk) but I'm looking for a good system to keep them untangled.

We took ours camping once. And frankly, i was more afraid of staying in the tent than they were, so we ended up staying in a cabin for the rest of the trip. I hate sleeping on the ground I found. I used their kennel a lot, and they had free roam in the tent, and when we went outside, they were on their leashes. Then, someone came up with a brilliant idea of tying a piece of rope onto two trees, and put their leashes onto that, making sure that thry couldn't get tangled in anything, but that it was in the shade, and we put a log-thingy up so they can climb and be up high. They were pretty content with that because they could move around. so while we were around the fire and out around, we could see them, and when we went somewhere, we either took them with up, or put them in their crate. but i must say, i was glad when we went into the cabin.

I ran a public campground in the adirondacks (north of Lake George) for many years....Stories I have MANY... what to bring depends on if you are tenting or staying in a cabin or trailer... if you are tenting you will need a LOT ----tent, sleeping bags, air mattresses, (compressor to blow them up), coolers full of ice and BEER and SODA and Juice and milk, you will need eggs, bacon, sausage, (in case you catch NO FISH)...you will need utensils and cookware (they sell camping cookware very inexpensively at Walmart)... Jugs for water, aluminum foil (for cooking and wraping leftovers)....Onions catsup, mustard, salt, pepper, GARLIC, butter, cheese, and another cooler to keep it all under ice---MAYBE some pancake mix, hotdogs and rolls and hamburger and rolls, make a nice big Macaroni salad and put it in the cooler... OR, buy no food and eat out all the time---which can be expensive in most areas where camping is ... (prices in the small towns in the Adirondacks are VERY high in the summer months when dining out).... bring a canoe if you have one OR call ahead to your campsite area to see if you can rent them THERE (canoes or boats for FISHING)... oh yeah bring FISHING GEAR and blankets and pillows and lanterns and MATCHES (book matches preferably)..oh yeah and MONEY---games for any kiddies you are bringing and CLOTHES---if you are staying 2 days---bring enough close for 4 days--in case you get wet, spill lunch or catch a fish and get fish guts on you while CLEANING your prize.....

Best Place to buy a Camping Tent.?

The best place to purchase a tent, if you are looking for a quality tent, is a store that has an actual "camping" department. Stay about from the big box department stores such as Walmart, K Mart, Target.

When you enter the department, look for name brand tents: Eureka, Coleman, Kelty, Marmot, The North Face. Stay away from "store brands". These are NOT made to the same quality standards as the name brand tents. Store brands are okay for the occasional camper who might not care about having to replace the tent in a few short years.

Select a tent that is easy to set up. A dome tent is much easier to set up than a cabin style tent whether you are a novice or an experienced camper. Since you are asking a question as to where to purchase a tent, I would have to guess you are a novice.

A dome tent will be rounded, much like a dome. A cabin tent will be shaped more like a box. The photos on the packaging will guide you as well as the description of the tent.

If you are just driving to a camp ground to set up the tent for a weekend or so, select a tent that is rated to hold more people than you actually plan on having in the tent. You will appreciate the extra interior space to store some of your belongings and in case of inclement weather that forces you to spend additional time in the tent.

Concerning "weather", also select a tent that has the largest rain fly that goes over the tent. The rain fly is made of waterproof material and is designed to shed the rain from the roof and, hopefully, sides of the tent. A full coverage rain fly is the best.

If and when you have questions on the tents, and you probably will, ask to talk to the most knowledgable camping associate in the store. Not everyone working in the store, or even near that area, will be extremely knowledgable on camping.

If the person is indeed an "expert", they will ask you numerous questions concerning your intended purchase. Such as: number of campers, type of camping you will be doing, length of trip or trips, how often will it be used, and finally what price range you had in mind. A good and knowledgable salesperson will suggest a tent that will fit your needs near the price you are looking to spend, not necessarily the most expensive one that they have to offer.

If there is space available in the store, ask if you can take the tent out of the box and set it up, or watch it being set up, so you can really see how easy or difficult it is as well as get in the tent to check it for space and interior features. (mesh storage pockets, ceiling loops to hold flashlights or a mesh "attic", ease of window and door closures)

We will be drive in camping with no running water. I want to make a special wash bucket with some rags for everyone to be able to rinse hands and other dirtys. Should I use a little bleach in the water to keep it fresh? Maybe a little soap? Any other ideas?

Some people keep a plastic rectangular tub in their sink (or one side of it) to soak dishes in. These come in various sizes and are very cheap. Found at Walmart, Kmart, etc. They make great camp sinks. They can also be taken into the tent for sponge bathing.

But your attempt to keep the water in the vessel "fresh" is futile. I would not put bleach or salt in it because nobody wants that stuff in their eyes.

A better approach is the "2 bucket" method. Bucket #1 holds clean water. One dips some clean water out of bucket #1 into the plastic tub, does what one wants with it, and then pours it out into bucket #2, which is waste water. That way the water source and the work bin stay clean and all the dirty stuff ends up in bucket #2. Buckets cost $3 at Home Depot. Just bring a dipper to remove water from bucket #1.

I assume you will have a water source, such as (my fave) 5 gallon blue plastic water jugs (like gas cans) with a spigot on each, available at Walmart for $10.

Just like condiments at the hot dog stand, one may set out near the wash tub some soap, bleach, or whatever for people to use, before dumping used water into bucket #2.

Not bad for a $12 solution, eh?

How can someone who hates camping make the most of it?

A friend invited me on a 3 night, 4 day camping trip with her and her family. I would really like to spend time with my friend, but I've never been much of an "outdoor girl". I like a nice hotel room over sleeping on the ground. That said, I need to get away and would really like to try something new. How do you make the most of a camping trip? What's the best way to sleep comfortably and avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitoes? Any hints, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Turn it into a glamping adventure by bringing all the comforts of home. The easiest way to do that is to use a recreational vehicle they can be rented for the day, the weekend, the week or all summer. These are a hotel on wheels basically and all campgrounds accommodate them.

If that is not your thing then tenting can still be a clamping adventure but still just as costly for the first timer. You start with getting a spacious tent and then outfitting it with the state of the art air beds, warm fluffy sleeping bags and or bedding, and comfy camp chairs and a nice side table with a coleman lamp an indoor/outdoor rug by the door and you have a wonderful and comfortable set up.

Skeeters can be kept at bay the same way that you would in your own back yard and decorate your campsite to. You can set out citronella oil lanterns and candles and then use a deet based product on your clothing.

What's the best method to protect my tent from rain while camping?

Anticipating any rain, I want to be able to shield the rain if possible. The tents are new and waterproof, but haven't used them in rain yet to know for sure and I don't want to use my vacation as the test.

If you bought a high quality tent it will keep you dry right out of the box and nothing needs to be done. If you have a lower quality tent then go to Walmart or any other camping store and buy some seam sealer and seal all the seams and stitching. Even a cheap tent should keep you dry if the seams are sealed. If you have any doubts set it up before the trip and throw a hose on it to test it out. If I ever have to put a tarp up over a tent then the tent will be promptly thrown in the garbage the next day.

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

I looked at some places that were pretty steep in price and was wondering if there was a place i could rent for really cheap. I don't need anything too fancy, though it would be nice. Renting a quality tent for family camping is a waste of money when you can buy a quality family sized tent from Coleman for less then $75. and Colman tents come with a stay dry guarantee. Besides that you don't have to hassle with bringing it back in to the rental place. A rental agency will tack on charges for damage and run up your charge card limits and when your traveling you need access to your credit for emergencies.
