Does anyone know where I could buy a tent ( online or in store ) that would be fire retardant FREE . ..?
I really need a new tent but I want to get one with no fire retardants.

I believe most tents have fire retardant. Your best bet would be one of the canvas tent suppliers. They make tepees and period tents from canvas and some are made to order. I'll bet they make a tent and then add the fire retardant. They would probably be the mfg. that has what you require.

How to assemble a big family camping tent?

I have ordered a 8 man family tent at an online store and I wonder how to assemble such a big tent? Will it cost too much time to setup?

1. Choose a level site that is free of rocks, sticks and other debris. Spread the tent out with the floor side down. Unzip all doors.

2. Extend the tent poles by pulling out each section and inserting it into the metal ferrules. Start in the middle of the pole to reduce tension on the internal string. Set the extended poles aside.

3. Locate the center hub on the center roof of the tent. If it is not already attached to your tent model, attach it with an "s" hook.

4. Take one tent pole and slide it through one of the sleeves on the tent wall. Insert the top of the pole into one of the openings in the center hub. Repeat with the remaining tent poles.

5. Enter the tent and lift the roof by raising the center hub. The roof and tent poles will be off of the ground. One adult stays in the tent while the other works outside. Flex one of the tent poles and place the free end into the metal pin at the base of the tent. The tent pole should follow the seam line of the tent. Repeat with the remaining tent poles.

6. Attach the tent to the tent pole frame. Clip the plastic clips that are sewn to the tent walls to the tent poles. If your tent has Velcro straps instead of clips, attach the Velcro straps to the tent pole frame.

7. Stake down the tent by inserting the tent stakes through the stake loops at each corner of the tent. Pull the tent floor even and tight. Hammer the stakes into the ground at a 45 degree angle.

8. Attach the rain fly. Place the rain fly over the tent. Attach the hooks on the corners of the rain fly to the metal rings on the tent corners. If your rain fly has an additional fly pole, slide it through the sleeve at the edge of the rain fly awning. Insert each pole end into the grommets on each side of the door.

What are the better quality family camping tents?

We would like to purchase a camping tent for the family. I am not too keen on dome tents as I am 6' tall and do not want to crawl around inside the tent. There are three of us but a fourth, mother in-law, may join us from time to time. We are not hard core backpackers so will be mostly staying in campsites for now. I want something easy to assemble. We are on somewhat of a budget so nothing over $500. However, we do not want to buy a cheap piece of junk either. Your help would be greatly appreciated

Big Agnes, Marmot, Kelty, Sierra Designs and Eureka are great brands that make excellent family tents for under $500. You can do so much better with that kind of money than a Coleman. Coleman is OK if you have a smaller budget, but if you can afford quality by having aluminum poles, better material and water proofing, vestibules, and all that, go for it. You'll have it a long time as long as it is cared for and stored properly.

The best are made by a company called The North Face, but can be quite expensive. We camp all the time, and have a Coleman family tent, an Ozark Trail tent (from Wal-mart, I think made by Coleman), and an REI back-packer's 2-man tent. If you have any sporting goods store nearby (Bass Pro Shop has an excellent assortment), go in and talk to a sales person. Keep in mind that the size of the tent (how many people it sleeps) is a very crowded fit. For 4 people to be comfy, with duffelbags inside, you really need an 8-person tent. Keep in mind, too, seasonality, the type of material the floor is made of (you don't want it to tear if you have to put it up on a gravel or rocky area), and weight.

What is the best family camping tent? Experienced campers are needed!

I would like to purchase a family camping tent for my husband and kids - only problem, I don't know ANYTHING about camping! I know I would like a 2 or 3 room tent, but I would like to be able to stand up in the side rooms. Some of the tents I have looked at it appears that you must "crawl" into the side tents. Is this a common thing? Also what do you suggest I purchase as necessities along with the tent? Sleeping bags, cots, stove? Any help is greatly appreciated, again I have never in my life camped so this is completely new to me.

Any family tent camping groups in southern California?

Have a 4 and 5 year old who enjoy camping. I am wondering if there is a family oriented camping group in southern California.

The YMCA, Boys/girls club, Boy Scouts of America are all active family outdoor organizations at 4-5 that's on the young side for camping related activities with these groups but they do have family camps where the whole family can attend camp together. Im going tent camping and there is plently to do during the day but what should we do at night besides sitting around the fire? Also if you could make me a camping checklist i would apreciate it! Thanks!

Will you be "family" camping or primitive camping with friends? My group usually brings a few different beverages and a variety of food. At night we sit around the bomb fire and share stories, laugh, and play drinking games. During the day we go canoeing on the river for about 4-5 hrs and that typically exhaustes us to just relax at night. If your going primitive camping its important to bring the essintals b/c you DEF need them. Depending on the type of camping you'll be doing will depend on what you'll need. Here just a few items I can think of:

Stakes (if not included w/ tent)
Flashlight/ Lantern- wick- kerosine
Stakes Hammer
Camping knife
Water- LOTS

What are some must-have snacks while camping?

My family and I are going camping. There will be my husband and I along with three children. We will be tent camping and need some ideas for some easy, yet satisfying snacks. Snacks can be kept in our cooler or dry. We prefer snacks that take little to no preparation. Thanks!!

That's great you are going camping, we camp every weekend. I usually take things like those p'nut butter sandwhich crackers, smores are great but remember the chocolate melts and so do the marshmallows into one icky mess. Trail mix is good, the kind you make yourself with m&m's, marshmallows, raisins, etc. (keep in cool place). Go-gurt, poptarts, apples, oranges, watermelon and cantelope already cubed. Cheez-it's too.
Do forget to pick up some glow sticks (necklaces) for the kids at night, they love them.

You also don't want a tent that allows little ventilation if you're staying in a hot area.

5. Consider the camping experience of the people you're camping with. If you're a novice camper, you might want a tent that's easy to set up. Generally, the fewer poles you have to deal with, the easier it is to set up and take down and the lighter weight.

What is the best camping spot you've been to in SoCal?

My family is looking to go camping this summer, again, we just got back from tent camping for a couple of days at McGrath State Beach in Ventura and it was actually really great! just a bit on the pricey side though.
I've seen the forest service camp site listings but a lot of their information is outdated and inaccurate. Do you guys have any suggestions, preferably in the SoCal area, details would be great! thanx in advance!

If you think McGrath is nice, try Carpinteria. You'll never go back. VERY family friendly, loads of fun, beach camping at it's finest.

El Capitan and Refugio are also nice. At this time of year, you'll have to check reservamerica every day to try to find a cancellation.

Note that Leo Carillo State PARK is not on the beach, but on the other side of PCH. I dislike Leo Carillo because the beach is too rocky.

Down South, Doheny is good.

Further south, San Clemente, San Elijo and South Carlsbad are OK, but you have to hike down those steps to get to the beach, then hike back up to get to your campsite on the bluffs. Pretty tiring.

Where is the best camping place in Tennessee in your opinion?I am planning to take my two boys (tent) camping for a week during spring break March 16-21. So I want to take them to a nice campground.

the great smoky mountains national park is an amazing place to go camping; 800 miles of trails, fishing, horseback riding, amazing waterfalls, tons of wildlife, camping there is $14-$23 a night; this is a great place to go camping, i have been there many times with my family and we can't wait to go back this summer
