Looking to camp (just a tent) right on the beach in North Carolina - Where should I go?

So I want to take a day trip sometime this summer to some beach here in NC with a couple of friends.

We're simply looking for a nice, non-crowded beach that we can simply put a tent up on - right on the sand - and stay the night and the next day.

I'm not looking for fancy campgrounds, just a place to hitch a tent on the sand!

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Answer
Camping is prohibited on all of North Carolina's beaches, as well as most other states that have coastlines. There are KOA campgrounds as well as other private campgrounds that you can go to, but most of them are not directly on the beach. Camping on the beach is prohibited on the beaches to prevent litter and a mess from campfires.

If you really want to camp on the beach, you could drive to a remote area where you will most likely not be seen, but if a police officer comes around, you will most likely be asked to leave and possibly charged. If you do decide to do that, please respect North Carolina's clean beaches and make sure you don't leave any litter behind. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a great place to go and it's very quiet there. The crystal coast is also a great place to visit. The best thing about North Carolina's Outer Banks is that there isn't a lot of development like Myrtle Beach and other beach destinations.

Enjoy your trip :)

Is there free camping anywhere in the outer banks, NC ?

Are you allowed to pitch a tent on beaches or something?

Answer
I have been going there for 15 years and I know that you can drive out on the beach with a 4WD and fish all night, and have a fire, but I have never seen anyone actually pitch a tent and camp out there in a tent. Since the seashore there in most places is part of the National Park Service, I would contact them and ask. http://www.nps.gov/caha
