With my school we are going to Los Angeles and the Oscars are going on during our time there, so we want to know places to stake out right next to it.
Answer
I'm sorry to be a bearer of bad news, but the cops won't let you stake out a place anywhere near the Kodak Theatre on Oscar Night. The north side of Hollywood Blvd (where the Kodak is located) is closed that night. The south sidewalk (across the street) is usually open to pedestrians, but the police keep everyone moving/walking, and won't let you stand and watch the arrivals. And they erect a number of plastic tents in the middle of Hollywood Blvd (some for security, some for the chance of rain), that block most of the view from the south side, anyway.
In the past, when the Oscars were held at the Shrine Auditorium, they used to let people camp out overnight for a seat in the bleachers, but once the Oscars moved to the Kodak, they stopped that. Now, if you want a seat outside the Oscars, you have to enter a random drawing, which is held months earlier (in September). If your name is drawn, you're given tickets to the bleachers in front of the Kodak. Everyone else is out of luck.
The closest you can get would probably be on the east side of the corner of Hollywood & Highland, and you can't see much (if anything) from there. (Except for the line of limos heading slowly towards the Kodak.)
However, if you go to the Hollywood & Highland area _before_ Oscar night, you can usually see the giant gold Oscar statues they put up outside, as well as the tents, and perhaps the red carpet (depending on the time you arrive), and get the general feel of excitement in the area as the event nears. But as for Oscar Night itself? Not a good idea.

Where are good places to go camping in So Cal during the winter.?
riley
My friends and i want to go somewhere not too far away from Los Angeles that will be fairly cheap. We want to go somewhere with snow but only have regular tents. There are about 12 of us going. Also it needs to be somewhere where there are not too many other people because we tend to be very loud and want to do our own thing. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Answer
Wanting snow and getting it in so cal is not very likely. Best places it may happen all together and still be accessible with privacy and be cheap are fewer still. The higher the altitude the more likely the snow, if weather permits. So you will be looking at the Big bear district of the San bernardino national forest and the back country behind Fawnskin or Heart bar. These area's have hike in or 4wd destinations that you can get away from the crowds at and possibly get a good winter snow campsite.
