best tent camping beach california image
Park
My friend and I want to drive from Texas to California to camp on the beach for a week or two depending on cost. We would like to stay somewhere that's a little more secure, less crowded, and most importantly inexpensive.
Answer
The public campgrounds used to book up to a year in advance but that just changed this year, now its a first come first served setup. Campgrounds in so-cal are always full, but from Santa Barbara north there is always available spots, the people seem to be a little more friendly also. Cost wise, if you are tent camping its about 8 dollars a night, rvs are about 20 with electric and water hook ups. I recommend Gaviota State Beach. Have a good trip!

Don't want to go to the beach again and don't want to freeze at the Grand Canyon.
Answer
The best camping is at Carpinteria State Beach... In fact, most of the best sites in SoCal are at the beach: El Capitan, Refugio, McGrath, Broome, Leo Carillos, Doheny, San Clemente, South Carlsbad and San Elijo. They are far and away the most popular sites.
However, at this late date, you don't have much of a chance of scoring a site, especially around Thansgiving.
Your best bet might be Lake Cachuma, where it's first-come, first-served. Good luck.

Joshua Tree is going to be almost as cold as the Grand Canyon. It is the high desert. Expected lows for this weekend are expected to be 34 degrees.
