I'm a sophomore in high school, so I will be graduating in 2012, but my friends and I want to have one last stretch of fun before going off to college. The plan that we came up with was possibly an all-summer trip to Europe and just tour the continent randomly. If that plan falls through, then possibly we will take an all-summer road trip around the USA. We want to find the cheapest solution to get to Europe and go around Europe. We wouldn't mind if camping or hitch-hiking were required, and our luggage would be light. Does anybody have experience with this kind of trip and how can we see the most of Europe for the least cost?
the other question is how to bring it up to the parents. Most of us will be 18 by June of 2012 but a few people may be 17 but graduated from high school.

It really isn't possible to predict what prices will be like that far out. You can check sites like Expedia, Travelocity or Kayak for current airfares. There are also budget sites like http://www.skyscanner.it/ and http://www.whichbudget.com/ which have a few transcontinental deals but are better for flights within the US or Europe.
However, a great many people do this every year. There are verious options for getting around here. In addition to the budget sites above, train travel is an excellent option. The German train website is good for finding schedules throughout Europe, but you'll need the individual country sites to price many trips. http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml . Eurail passes are a common way to go. http://www.eurail.com/ You need to know that most high speed, international, and night trains require reservations and a supplemental fee (use the search tool on the site to find "supplement". Regional trains do not have additional charges. There's a good site on train travel here: http://www.seat61.com/ . The night trains are a good option for traveling long distances since you can sleep while you travel and don't have to have additional accomodations for the night.
There are lots of websites for hostels which provide inexpensive accomodation. There are campgrounds that have tents and cots in many places. You might also consider monasteries and convents. These aren't always cheap, but can be in other cases.

As for approaching your parents, have a plan in place and sufficient funding saved up for the trip. This can be a very good experience. You know your parents best and they also know you. Spend the next couple of years demonstrating your maturity and ability to manage things independently.

DOGMASTER
States of America be a replica of Haiti by 2014? Will our landfills/public dumps be surrounded by tent camps?
Answer
Thankfully that is not likely to happen and someone with the best interest of the country as their goal will be elected.
