But seriously, unless you plan on wrapping yourself in bacon topped with cake frosting, there's no need to be so paranoid about bears. You can rent a cabin, sleep in your car or truck, or bring a hard-side camping trailer. If you're this uptight, you probably won't enjoy the experience anyway.

"The North Island" and "The South Island". If you come the Immigration Dept say you must have $1000NZ ($600 US), which is $250 per week, but that would only be enough if you hitchhiked everywhere, which is still safe, transport is pretty expensive. A backpackers hostel will cost you $20-35NZ per night you can also camp for about $12-$25 per night. Motorcamps are always worth checking out they can offer cabins quite cheaply. Don't come in high season Nov-Late March, come in April its still quite warm or October, it might be starting to warm up again. There are places where you can freedom camp, and as long as you don't do any overpriced tourist activities and steer clear of places like Queenstown (go for half a day but stay somewhere else for the night) you can go on the cheap. Get to know the locals and someone might offer you a place to stay. Buy a small tent, you won't regret it, it will save you a lot of money.

I think, to be on the safe side you should bring $1000 US but if you are careful with your money, you might go home with change. In Wellington stay at Rowena's Lodge in Brougham St, you can pitch a tent out the back and its quite safe. Costs about $15 per night.

Buy your food only from Supermarkets or factory outlets (incl food). Look out for specials. You can always get a good meal that way. There's always enough available on special to get a good cheap meal.

There is some real cheap bus trips in Nz but you need to look for them . Also www.grabaseat.co.nz is air new zealands cheap flights that come up
NZ is beautiful I hope you will be there between November and April when the weather is nicer but you can still get cold and plenty of rain. You can't work unless you have a work visa . Nz is a safe Country but there are always opportunist about so keep your eye on your possesions and dont put yourself in lonely areas by yourself. Saying that the chances are good for being safe but not worth the risk. There are plenty of backpackers accomodation and you will get plenty of info at them and meet up with people and listen to their experiences,Have a beautiful time there are some beautiful places in NZ so see as much as you can. You can set up a tent in a lot of places but ask the farmer or go to a camp site . The people are friendly . The tourist visa will last for 3 months

I'm 18, and coming from the Gold Coast to help out locals (just going around neighbourhoods helping clean up mud etc..small things make a difference as I found out during the Brisbane floods!).

I will most likely be coming by myself and have no where to stay in Chch. Does anyone know of any cheap camp sites or backpackers etc that are open in and around Christchurch as I have a very small budget..I'm willing to buy a one man tent and camp somewhere if need be. Also are buses still running around Christchurch? What are the prices like?

Cheapest Forms Of Accommodation In New Zealand?

Mid November I would like to go to new Zealand.

However when I went to Oz a few years ago stopping at the YHA's was very expensive over three month period.
I would say it took a good 1/3 of my total budget.

Are the YHA's in New Zealand as expensive as the ones in Australia?

Can anyone suggest any cheaper forms of accomodation?

I did hear about Couchsurfers-but it has not got a very good reputation-apparently.

Any help appreciated.

Free camping is legal in New Zealand so long as you are far enough away from civilization.... thats not going to cost you anything if you do that!
YHA hostels are expensive in NZ (similar to OZ) but there are some very good independent hostels which are a little cheaper.
Campsites are only about £10 (US$20) for 2 people sharing a tent, and they normally have really good amenities.

So that's about $2000 US? I think that should be enough, although with your needing to get camping gear here, it won't be the most luxurious experience. It really depends on your flight though, as that will be the big expense. I think of Burning Man as costing around $1000; for me that includes a flight from the midwestern US to Reno, rental car, Burning Man ticket, and food, water, cigarettes and alcohol (I've already got camping gear and costumes).

I can say you that this cities is so safe. Except Sao Paulo because the drugs gangs, but you can walk in downtown without problems. I don't commend you small cities and Bahia too.

I was going to go camping in Hahei with a bunch of old friends over the new year period, but the weather is bad now and it's supposed to get worse with a chance of thunder. If I'm going to lug a bunch of stuff down to Hahei and live in my leaking tent, I want perfect weather lol, so I won't be going to Hahei now. Maybe I'll go in February when the weather will hopefully be stunning in that very beautiful part of NZ.

I have no idea what I'm doing now. I suppose it's really just another day of the year. Anyway, the New Year should be something celebrated in the beginning of spring I think.

Freedom camping with a small tent would perhaps be more difficult. There will be many spots that look suitable that may say no camping. You would need to check with the information centre in Queenstown as to where it is permissible, as there are council by laws.Often picnic areas for instance do not allow camping.A camper van is just a parked vehicle so a bit different.
