What kind of camping stuff can you rent on a military base?

My husband is Army and in Korea and where I live there is an Air Force base. I heard you can rent camping equipment and other stuff from there. Is this true and if so what all is there to rent for camping? And are the prices reasonable?

Answer
the out door rec building has a bunch of things. camping. BBQ, bounce houses, chairs, tables. all sorts of things.

i was going to get a bounce house for my son's b-day. they were $50 and normally $65 down town. so a little cheaper.

it will depend on the kind of camping you want to do. if you are talking tents and sleeping bags. them walmart might just be better, then you own them and can go more often. but if you are looking for an RV, the kind you pull with your truck. then they are good priced. different areas have different prices. i think the RV's were $85-175 a day depending on size.

since your hubby is in NK. you will need your POA.. since he is army and not actually assigned to the AF base near by. so check to make sure they will allow you to do the pick up.

Where can I rent a camping tent for really cheap?

justine

My friends and I want to go to Yosemite for like a trip and we were trying to find a couple tents that we could use. I looked at some places that were pretty steep in price and was wondering if there was a place i could rent for really cheap. I don't need anything too fancy, though it would be nice. I am looking for tents or a tent that can fit four people.

Thanks!

Answer
Renting a quality tent for family camping is a waste of money when you can buy a quality family sized tent from Coleman for less then $75. and Colman tents come with a stay dry guarantee. Besides that you don't have to hassle with bringing it back in to the rental place. A rental agency will tack on charges for damage and run up your charge card limits and when your traveling you need access to your credit for emergencies. To discover out in the middle of nowhere that your over limit is a very big hassle. Here is a link with a good price on colman tents

Looking for suggestions on places to camp in Tennessee?

flybynight

My two sons and I will be traveling through Tennessee in July and we are looking to spend a day or two at a campground. I have done some research online and have found a few state parks that look lovely... Fall River Falls for example. I was just hoping for any more suggestions from people who have more familiarity with the area than I do. Our final destination is going to be Atlanta and we are starting in Wisconsin. We are looking to do some hiking, climbing, swimming and tenting.

Answer
Fall Creek Falls is wonderful. The falls are incredible.

Another one to check out is Tims Ford State Park in Estill Springs/Winchester. It has cabin rentals too, and offers boating, golf, swimming, bicycling, and nature programs. It is only about 15 miles off I-24 (take the Manchester exit to TN-55).

If you want something less up scale, check out Old Stone Fort State Archeaological Park in Manchester. It has tent camping, golf course, archeaological museum, hiking, and is on a river gorge. Just a mile or so off I-24 but very remote.

Is crossing country (USA) on a 750cc Kawasaki Vulcan good idea?

cheap tent camping usa on ... tent camping two-tier outdoor camping tent mountaineering tent, $267

Jake

Hi -

I will be selling my car and getting a motorcycle this summer. I live in Maine, so it will be a great starting point if I choose to ride across the country during my school break.

I will have a Kawasaki 750cc Vulcan (not sure of year right now), but it is in great shape and has low milage. I've never rode a bike before, but I will learn quickly. I'm taking my classes soon to get my permit.

So::

Is it crazy to think about travelling to California and back to Maine on a 750cc Kawasaki Vulcan? If I bring a tent and set up camp throughout the trip, how much should I plan on budgeting for gas/food/other expenses?
**THIS WILL BE DURING MY SUMMER BREAK FROM SCHOOL, WHICH IS 3 MONTHS LONG
*thanks for the answers/support so far. what is the least amount of money you think someone could do this with? i'm not opposed to camping/sleeping in parking lots to avoid hotel costs.

how much time should i budget for a cross the country and back trip?

any recommended routes/other tips/stories feel free to share.

thanks ALL

Answer
A 750 cruiser is plenty big enough to cross the country. It's a lot more expensive these days when when I did it (in a VW van). Maine to CA and back is 6000 miles (roughly), which at 45 mpg is 133 gallons of gas. Camping used to be like 3 or 4 dollars, now at a California state park it's like $25 (but there are lots of cheaper places I'm sure).

My recommendation would be to take a few long highway trips first, like for a weekend or three days. Cover 200 then 300 then 500 miles per day. 500 miles is a long day on a bike, and day after day little things that normally wouldn't bother you become big things. A cruiser is more comfortable but you want to find what things you want to change. An aftermarket seat might not be a bad idea.

Also you should have a fairing or at least a windshield. It makes a HUGE difference riding all day on the highway. The wind on your chest really beats you up!

In fact, for your very first Summer on a motorcycle you might decide on something a little shorter, more local. Up into the Maritime provinces, or down the East Coast to the Carolinas or GA.

Looking for some advice on backpacking?

TripHazard

I'm heading out on a backpacking trip for 6 weeks. I'm traveling via train mostly; however, I'm taking my bike with me. In addition, I'll be staying in mostly hostels. I'm heading east from Denver up to the northeast and into Canada ending up in Seattle. I plan on taking a lightweight sleeping bag, but heard hostels sometimes don't allow them? Are there anything I should be aware of? Things to bring? Not to bring?

Answer
I took a bike tour from Amsterdam to Sweden one year and here's my advice:
Think WATERPROOF EVERYTHING !!!!! It think you'll be traveling through some rainy places.
Get shoes with Gore Tex, (or similar waterPROOF breathable membrane)
Everything as lightweight as possible. If you're staying in hostels ask in advance what they require. You might not need a puffy sleeping bag unless you're camping; if you want take a lightweight down filled bag. They fold smaller then polyfills.. You could take a polyester fleece sleeping sack like the one I bought at a Target or Kmart for about $9.99. It can unzip into a sheet or zip together like a sleeping bag, and it folds or rolls up very small.
Or just take a sheet or a twin sized duvet cover. If hostels are that strict, do you really want to stay with them?
I took a small 2 person tent, kept it in my bike bags, and used it some, but the problem was RAIN. Put things like clothes and papers inside plastic bags, and don't think
Water-resistant is anywhere near WaterPROOF. Good thing nowadays waterproof doesn't only mean heavy rubber. The tent's rain cover I put over the stuff inside my bike bag as more waterproof protection, but a plastic poncho is good too, then you can use it to sit on for your picnic in a dewy field..
I also recommend being ready for serious heat if you're traveling in USA or even Canada in Summer. COOLMAX will serve you better than cotton t-shirts, Fishing shirts have mesh inside that keep you cool and they have all kinds of pockets that velcro shut. Get one of those. And nylon shorts and lightweight cargo shorts are better than jean shorts. Fleece is lighter than leather, wool, or cotton sweats. You'll need something for cool times, so a fleece jacket and a goretex rain jacket should be enough. Get some athletic sandals that strap on and are very comfortable to walk in. Protect your eyes. lips and skin from the blazing sun!!
Buy a seat cushion if you'll be biking more than a few hours, and bike shorts with padding. If you're city biking, have a good lock and stash your panniers in the hostel.
Finally, I recommend some black nylon pants that have Goretex (or similar) and are waterproof. The ones I have look normal enough to pass for black slacks at night.
They also have a kind of mesh inside that keeps you cool and keeps the pants from sticking to your legs even if it is raining. And the Goretex blocks the wind, so they're the perfect pants for travel.
And, they have zipper pockets and hidden pockets that are great when you're traveling to keep things safe.
When you sit on a wet park bench you're cooly doesn't get wet. And they almost never get dirty and if they do you just shower them off and they dry fast. You can find them online or in stores or catalogs that sell camping and outdoor gear and clothing.
PACK lite!!!!! Leave the economy size shampoo and gel at home. Take along some old clothes like socks, undies, and tshirts ready to throw away, and as they get dirty throw them away. When you get rid of them, buy some new ones. It's time anyway, isn't it? And it'll be almost as cheap as running your old holy ones through a laundromat.

Going tent camping What should we do at night and camping checklist?

Artsygirly

Im going tent camping and there is plently to do during the day but what should we do at night besides sitting around the fire? Also if you could make me a camping checklist i would apreciate it! Thanks!

Answer
Will you be "family" camping or primitive camping with friends? My group usually brings a few different beverages and a variety of food. At night we sit around the bomb fire and share stories, laugh, and play drinking games. During the day we go canoeing on the river for about 4-5 hrs and that typically exhaustes us to just relax at night. If your going primitive camping its important to bring the essintals b/c you DEF need them. Depending on the type of camping you'll be doing will depend on what you'll need. Here just a few items I can think of:

Tent
Tarp
Stakes (if not included w/ tent)
Flashlight/ Lantern- wick- kerosine
Stakes Hammer
Camping knife
Water- LOTS
Food
Portable Grill or Stove
Utinesils/Plates
Trash bags/ Toilet Paper (if no bathrooms are provided)
Water Sealant for tent
Cooler
Radio
Matches/Lighter
Wood (usually can be bought from the camp site)

What is an ideal tent for 2 people?

tents for camping 4-person image

nana

The thing is we're looking for an ideal tent to go camping.
The criteria:
-I'm quite big (6.06 feet)
-we would like to fit a 2 person mattress in it
-we'd like to have enough space to fit in our luggage (two big bags)
-our budget is around 150$

It seems that most tents are either not long enough (my feet are coming out of the tent if I lie down) or it is too much of a tunnel (meaning our heads will touch the tent if we use the mattress for comfort).

Most tents I've found so far are 4 person tents which are reaaally expensive or have some flaws like it might rain inside if there's a bit of wind.

Answer

What are your plans for a zombie apocolypse?

Luis

My plans are going to for your average 4 person family. One 8 year old girl, one 14 year old guy (me), and one 34 year old mom and dad. Our vehicle of transportation is a Ford Fusion late '00's. We can make weapons out of golf clubs by cutting off the head of the club and leaving the shaft for use. We also have kitchen knives, hammers, saws, and dumbbells (heavy projectile weaponry). We have wine/beer bottles we can use as melee or projectile, also wine glasses to be used (melee and/or projectile as well). We have a first-aid kit but we need to stock up on band-aids, cool packs, and medicine for fever, cough, stomach ache (I get them frequently. BIG disadvantage), etc. We aren't going to just stick at home, we have to move around or our odds of dying are more likely. Where we'll go for better supplies like protection and weaponry is academy or some sports and outdoors store. If there are any you-know-what over there, we'll try to kill them off using our surroundings. If we succed, well go find supplies. After that, well go to a supermarket like walmart and stock up and save food. We have to make sure it doesn't need to be refrigerated or it'll spoil with time. It'll also attract zombies. We can stock up on things like crackers, granola bars, WATER, no soda because it snaps when opened and zombies may hear. We will sleep in places like an undergound hole or a large tent we could find at academy. NO SEX! Yeah, that's right. It'll distract you and you won't be ready for an ambush. Mose likely won't get strep throat because I got my tonsils removed. Make sure you're vaccanized so you'll be lesser vulnerable to non-zombie related sicknesses. If you have a beloved pet, take them especially if they're protective like a large dog. Make sure your vehicle is FULL on gass and has good oil or else you'll have a bad ride. If you're full and you run out, it's best to find a police or fire station and find keys to the firetruck or police car/SUV. What's your plan?

Answer
Well I live near the Rocky Mountains so my first plan is to go to my nearest elementary school and fortify it with some local community members. We will hold out at the school creating a perimeter at the school gates and defending them until the military arrives. My supplies so far is my katana, combat knife, sharpened shovel, crowbar. And I know how to farm and grow my own food, I have also studied a bit of botany in order to identify wild plants that can be used for food and medicine. If the military fails to arrive we will evacuate with small teams each taking separate routes to an undisclosed location hidden in the Rockies using bicycles since they are quite, easy to fix, and fast and we will begin constructing a wooden fort and post sentries in the nearby pine trees as look outs while the others begin construction. Once the fort is built we will wait for five years before sending out a scouting party to gather news, if they do not return after a set time then we will have deemed the worst has happened.

Flaws in your plan:
Car=bad, the roads and highways will be clogged with them and if you think you can get through with a ford fusion, you are dead wrong.
Golf Clubs: If you are planning long term survival a golf club won't last in many fights because that is not it's original purpose. I suggest something lethal yet practical like a crowbar, it's highly durable and can be used to open doors and such.
Supplies: Learn some botany and first aid without using processed medicine and learn to bear without it because once a zombie apocalypse happens medical supplies go faster than you can imagine.
Location: Get away from large city areas, if you are going to plan to go to a sport store during an outbreak you're gonna die, zombies tend to gather where there is a food source and that especially means a store where there are people trying to hold out in and if you are in a city or even a suburb it can be hell. Underground is the worst place you can camp out in, if you've ever been in a sewer you have to work there in order to know how to get around and usually being underground you can easily get cornered, trapped and killed. NEVER GO TO A POLICE STATION, CHURCH, OR HOSPITAL these are hotspots for zombies due to the fact that people love to swarm to a police station thinking it is safe when in actuality there could be a lot of infected people there.

Answer
I cant believe the people that say camping is great with a baby. They may be right, but I wouldnt try it with my kids (ages 2 and 3 weeks). Why? Because when we take my son to a new place to sleep, it bothers him- be it grandma's house, a hotel, a condo, whatever. So he gets fussy, he doesnt want to go to bed, he cries a lot, etc. And this is a laid-back kid that started sleeping through the night when he was 10 days old. I can only imagine how much worse it would be, being stuck in a tent with him.

When my son was 9 months old, we took him down to Hilton Head in SC. We left at like, 3AM, so when he woke up around 8:30 AM, we were already almost halfway there. We're thinking about maybe going back later this summer, after the baby is a few months older. We get a 2-3 bedroom condo. That makes it seem more like home to the kids. And they get their own rooms, which means they dont see us if they wake up a little bit at night, so they go back to sleep, rather than screaming to get our attention.

That being said, it sounds like you want to stay closer. Cedar Point is great, but an 8 month old would hate it, and would make it no fun for parents too. Same with Kings Island. I'd suggest someplace more laid back- like rent a couple bedroom cabin at Hocking Hills. You're still in a nice, quiet, natural area, but you've got a house which will make your baby a lot more comfortable. If you are willing to consider Tennessee/North Carolina, then you could also get a cabin on the Smoky Mountains. Its a very straight shot down I75, so its an easy and relatively short drive- shorter than many parts of Illinois and around the same as going to Chicago.
You could also consider renting a place on Put-In-Bay up on Lake Erie.
Or make the drive to the beach at Myrtle, Hilton Head, or Virginia. Kids like the beach a lot more than mountains anyway, stop halfway and spend the night if 8-12 hours driving is too much for your little one. Just be sure to get a place with 2 bedrooms if you can, you will all be a lot happier.

I'm looking for rustic camping within a few hours of Cincinnati OH. Any ideas?

Mommy Dear

I have a 5 year old who loves camping and hiking. We like primitive tent camping and no amenities are really "required", but we do need a campsite that I can drive to, nothing that requires a long hike just to get there. Last year we had a blast at Hocking Hills, but I'm looking for something different. I've looked at Grand Lake St Mary and contemplated going all the way up to Lake Erie, Kanawha State Forest in WV, Rocky Fork State Park for something closer. Does anyone have any experience with any of these places or know of some place better that I'm missing?

How do hunters protect themselves from man eaters while sleeping in the woods?

tents for camping black wolf image
Q. You don't know that they are coming when you are sleeping.

Answer
I have slept in the Rockies in Grizzly / mountain lion country and here in Alaska with brown bears, black bears and wolves about. There are a number of things you can do.
The number 1 thing is no food in your camp or the smell of food on you. Cook about 40 yards or more from your camp. Keep all food in a container up in a tree held by rope to a tree near it. If you get the smell of food on you wash up and change clothes this includes the smell of fish.
Do not use shampoo that smells like food such as strawberry.

Location of your tent or camp is important. Never camp on a moose trail or bear trail. Avoid camping in thick brush or tall grass where you cant see around you. Avoid camping in river bottoms near the stream or river when there is a food source such as salmon. Donât camp in berry patches where bears feed.
If you have horses and are in cougar or bear country you need to put them on a picket line close to your tent or sleeping bag and keep a fire going that gives off some light and keep your firearm and flashlight ready or some noise maker such as an air horn. A gun is MUCH better.

If youâre camping in an area with lots of bears some use a portable electric fence. This is what scientists and biologists use in polar bear and brown bear territory. These work great for bears.

As the others said you can run a string or fishing line around your camp and then tie cans or something that will make noise if something walks into the line.

One time in the Rockies I had a grizzly following me as I was hiking into the Bob Marshal wilderness area. For a few days it followed. So at night I slept in the thickest pile of downed trees I could find. So the bear would have to dig through those logs to get to me, giving me time to wake up and ready my gun. Or I would sleep inside a rock over hang as far back as possible to be safe from falling rocks and built a big fire at the entrance.
Staying alert is very important. Going to sleep after you got drunk is a BAD idea in the wilderness.
I have more but this is long enough as it is. But I have camped alone in wilderness areas for months and was fine. Last summer I camped with friends along a river with brown bears all over the place. We had one walk right through our camp but it found nothing of interest and I could see it didnât like the smoke from the fire. I had my rifle aimed at it as it went through. A soon as I said âget out of here bear!â it left and all was good.
Fact is your more in danger sleeping on a park bench in a major city at night than any wilderness area. I just wouldnât even try that!

I live in connecticut, where can me and my friends go camping, somewhere fun with nice scenery?

We like the Davidson River Campground. Take the Blue Ridge Parkway toward Cherokee, at US 276 turn left toward Brevard. Campground is on the right.

We also like Lake Powhatan which is just west of Asheville and near the Biltmore Plantation.

If it is still hot, camp at the campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Mt. Pisgah and across the road from the Pisgah Inn.

My husband and I want to take our 3 young children (ages 7, 5, and 3) camping for the first time over summer vacation (June/July). We live in Stockton, California and to not want to drive more than 2-3 hours. I have been to Yosemite several times and think my children would enjoy it more when thay are a little older. I have also been to Calaveras Big Trees several times and like it, but I want to try someplace new. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are tent camping or a cabover close to your area is a pretty 10 site campground at kirkwood. A small lake for the kids to fish. hiking is great. I like lake almanor for a big rig. Nice paved bike and walking trails. Deer come to join you for breakfast. Bucks lake and little grass valley are nice for that time of year. both at 5200 feet and cooler than the valley. I am a ritired camp manager and love to see familkies spend quality time together camping. Have a great time where ever you decide.

What is the necessary bike equipment needed for a weeklong bike trip?

lesley

Probably doing 30-40 miles a day at a leisurely pace. Rental company will be providing the bikes, paniers and helmets. What should I plan on bringing clothing and other equipment-wise--want to travel light. Thanks!

Answer
All trips start with a credit card/cash -- it'll get you out of almost any difficulty.

Basic bike stuff: water bottles, extra tube, pump, patch kit, etc. Tires, spokes and tools are usually provided by the operator

More or less you want to cover the "10 essentials": Map, Flashlight / Headlamp, First-Aid Kit, Pocket Knife, Insect Repellents, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, Medications, Toiletries.

Layered clothes to handle a variety of weather conditions. Post ride clothes can usually part of your layering. Extra bike shorts (wash one, wear one). Small amount of soap (to wash aforementioned bike clothes). Lightweight rain jacket and some plastic bags to handle inclement weather. One of those free hotel shower caps makes a pretty good helmet cover.

Special food or drink that you like on a ride (mostly I pick it up at stores along the way)

Depends on whether you are camping or hoteling. Camping requires more gear, tent, sleeping bag, etc. Hoteling covers the basics, towels, shampoo, etc so you can go lighter.

Have a great trip!

what is a footprint for tents?

Joe Bundia

i am going camping in west virginia and just purchased a eureka one man tent for about $150, what is a footprint and would you recomend one?
where can i find a footprint that is the exact size of the eureka backcountry 1 tent???

Answer
The footprint is the modern version of a ground cloth or tarp. In the "old days" (I still use one), campers use to just plop down a ground cloth and then put the tent over the top. Nowadays they have manufactured ground clothes that are the exact shape of the tent floor and clip into the tent itself.

A ground cloth or a footprint can extend the life of your tent by protecting the floor from direct contact with ground by keeping it clean and preventing punctures.

I don't personally use footprints...I use a ground cloth. It's much cheaper and almost as convenient. I one of those high end "space blankets" (not the mylar emergency ones) and have the reflective surface up to reflect any body heat back.

Camping advice in Virginia area? Good prices and/or free?

Hoopla!

I want to go camping somewhere out a little farther than Richmond VA, but still in Virginia. What are some either free or "cheap" campsites in Virginia? I would like to camp in a tent but also if good cabin prices would be nice too. I'd like some advice of some fun places to go. I'd like to stay about 3-5 days and so would need showers. And I'd like to be near water with places to hike or things to do. Help would be nice :) Thank you.

Answer
Ok free camping is called dispersed or boondock camping and unless you bring a bathroom with you there won't be any. National forests allow free dispersed camping, some sites are accessible by car most you have to hike in to.
http://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/gwj/recreation/camping-cabins

"Cheap" campsites come next, these are forest service campsites that have little to no features and may only have a pit toilet at best, prices vary by demand but are usually around $10-$20 a night. Also listed on the above web site

Next would be full service campgrounds where if you had an RV you could roll right up hook in your RV to water sewer and electric and have all the comforts of home. Again these sites vary by demand and could be as low as $20 or as high as $200 or more per night depending on private or public operation and available amenities. http://woodalls.com/ lists all that there is.

Last is Cabin rental now some forests have government owned cabins you can rent for low cost anywhere from $50 to again several hundred based on location and demand these would be listed under the same category as the campground info of the forest service web sites. Private ownership cabins are easy to yahoo search for and prices again very all the way into the thousands.

Good Luck!

...this weekend? The hurricane isn't expected to hit the NC coast, but they may get winds and rough seas. Tent camping.

Answer
love the OBX but i would wait until the storm has hit and is over with. i know the waves can get very rough there and you would just have to turn away for a second for a tragedy to happen.

I have between 4 to 6 Adults and 2 or 3 small children and 2 cars. (not sure yet). We would like running water, but no electricity is not a big deal. We will be using tents and want to avoid the big RV parks and the commercial places. No Pools, golfcourses, clubhouses, arcades etc. We want our children to experience the rustic NH wilderness while still being safe. If anyone has any recommendations or knows a good place to look please help me out ! Thanks.

Answer
Here is the website for Exeter Elms in Exeter, New Hampshire. I have stayed there in the past and it is a top notch operation, Great tent sites on the river, clean showers, and it is close to the beach, Portsmouth, and New England dragway. I was in Ash tenting area #4A . http://www.exeterelms.com/
Happy camping,

Would it be too cold to go camping in New Hampshire next weekend?

Skywind

I was thinking of camping near the Kankamangus highway next weekend. Just wondering if it gets below freezing this time of year, and what weather to expect. Thanks!

Answer
Almost perfect camping weather if you ask me. Only snow would make it better. I've camped in that are a few times in winter. Never had any problems. The fair-weather boneheads from Bah-Stan and Noo-Yawk are usually gone...so are the Blackflies! Unfortunately, so are most of the leaves, but it makes spotting Moose just that more easy.

A warm sleeping bag and some good clothing are essential. Keep yourself hydrated and cook up some warm food often and you should be fine. Make sure you have proper rain gear and a good tenting area.

Have Fun!

Where is the best spot to beach camp in Oregon?

a e

I'm looking for a spot that's somewhat secluded, so as to avoid campgrounds and being kicked off the beach for illegal camping. Northern Oregon or Southern Washington Coast is preferred. Thanks!

Answer
I believe in Oregon you can pitch a tent anywhere along the Coast. No camp ground needed. The obvious Leave no Trace rules apply and a couple of other things. Check out the statement below that I found on this web site:

http://www.romantic-oregon-coast.com/oregon-coast-camping.html

"Thanks to the wonderful Oregon "beach bill," you are allowed to pitch "a tent directly on the beach, but there are a couple rules you need to abide by. First, you cannot camp within view of a home or business and, next, you are strictly forbidden to camp adjacent to a Oregon state park. You may want to check with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department for anything else you should know"

How to fix the camping tent poles?

best camping tent for 2 people on Boutique luxury camping holidays and short breaks in North Yorkshire ...
best camping tent for 2 people image

Nadine

I am planning to go camping with my friends but I found two of my camping tent poles are broken. Any one knows how to fix it?

Answer
1.Go to a sporting goods store and look for tent pole repair sleeves. Buy as many sleeves as you have broken tent poles (hopefully it's only one).

2.Slip the tent pole repair sleeve over the broken tent pole, and wrap duct tape around the top and bottom of the sleeve to further secure it in place.

3.Go to a hardware store if you aren't able to find a tent repair sleeve that will work with your tent pole.

4.Buy some aluminum roof flashing and two nylon clamps. Cut the aluminum flashing to size with tin snips and wrap it around the broken sections of the tent pole.

5.Secure it in place by putting clamps at the top and bottom of the sleeve you have created. Wrap the aluminum flashing with duct tape to cover any sharp edges.

How to repair a canvas camping tent?

Ivy

I noticed there is a tear in my canvas camping tent. Can it be fixed? How to do that?

Answer
1. Sew the sides of the damaged area together. This is similar to sewing clothing, except that thick canvas may require a large needle or awl and heavy duty or waxed string. These materials are available at outdoor specialty stores.

2. Spread seam sealer or beeswax to the sewn seam. This product is available at outdoor and camping specialty stores, and can vary depending on the make of your tent (canvas or nylon). Follow all product instructions and warnings for proper application details, including drying time.

3. Line up one of the patches so that it is centered with the inside area of the tear. The patch should be larger than the damaged area on all sides by at least 2 inches. Secure the patch with glue, which can also vary depending on the make of your tent. Follow product instructions for drying time; be sure the adhesive is completely dry before continuing.

4. Sew the patch into place to fully secure it. Using adhesive and stitches will help prevent the tear from spreading or from opening again.

5. Spread seam sealer or wax over the sewn seams and the edges of the patch for optimal protection.

6. Line up, glue and sew the other patch to the outside of the tear. Be sure that it lines up with the inner patch, as the two should be the same size. Apply sealer or wax to the seams and the edges of the patch.

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

BB

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

What are some must-have snacks while camping?

My family and I are going camping. There will be my husband and I along with three children. We will be tent camping and need some ideas for some easy, yet satisfying snacks. Snacks can be kept in our cooler or dry. We prefer snacks that take little to no preparation. Thanks!!

Answer
That's great you are going camping, we camp every weekend. I usually take things like those p'nut butter sandwhich crackers, smores are great but remember the chocolate melts and so do the marshmallows into one icky mess. Trail mix is good, the kind you make yourself with m&m's, marshmallows, raisins, etc. (keep in cool place). Go-gurt, poptarts, apples, oranges, watermelon and cantelope already cubed. Cheez-it's too.
Do forget to pick up some glow sticks (necklaces) for the kids at night, they love them.

What are some fun ideas for camping when it rains?

The Gay Ar

I am going tent camping alone and it seems that it will be raining, possibly storming, for a period of my trip. What are some ideas/things you have done when this occurs to have fun?

I am not shy about the rain so outdoor ideas are welcome as well.

Thanks in advance.

Carl

Answer
Children like the rain. Then our parents tell us we can't go outside because it's raining and we stop liking the rain. Learn to love the rain again. Unless it is cold out or there is lightening, hail, or high winds, the rain can be fun.

Put on a poncho and boots and go for a walk in the rain. Or if it's warm, forget the poncho. (Have a change of clothes waiting at the tent.)

Rain covers your scent and the sound of your footsteps. That means you can sometimes get closer to wild animals when it's raining. (I'm a hunter. I love hunting in the rain for this reason.)

Learn to build a shelter (links below) so you can keep a fire going in the rain.

*******IMPORTANT*******
You mentioned that it may storm. I do not recommend hiking in a storm. And be careful where you put your tent. Dead trees and limbs (widow-makers) can fall and put an end to your trip and your life. Same for flash floods.
