Trip from UK to America- how much would it cost?

charcoal

I'm thinking trying to see if I can have a short holiday in America but I'm only 17, I want to be as cheap as possible...

So I have some questions-
1. Where is the best place to vist in America? (I'd love to see New York but I think that's just too expensive...) But I want to see something interesting!
2. What kind of place should I stay in? (I mean hotel, hostel, do they have campsites..?) What sort of prices are all of these?
3. How much money(ish) would I need per day? How much would this vary from place to place...
4. How long is the shortest time I could (should) go for to keep costs low and still have a good time and see things?

I'm thinking of going with my mum.. it's my 18th birthday this summer, so she said a while back that if she could afford it that me and her could go to Paris for the weekend, or somewhere else if I could make up some of the difference...

In costs, I won't be spending money on alcohol or anything, since I'd be going with my mum..

Answer
Whilst I really liked the West Coast, I'd recommend that you go somewhere on the East Coast for the sole reason that as you're trying to budget the air fare will be a lot cheaper. If you want to see something interesting but at the same time restrict costs, I'd suggest going to a city as it means there will be things to see but you won't havethe expense of travelling around.

Staying in hostels will cut down costs and I've found that hostels in the US are on the whole quite good. If you do go to a city I really wouldn't recommend camping (they do have campsites over there by the way) - would you feel safe pitching a tent in the middle of London? Hostels will also usually have a kitchen and so you can cut down your spending by cooking your own food.

As for where you should go, New York is brilliant but is also fairly expensive (well, for America it is). Maybe you could look at places such as Boston or Washington DC which will still have plenty to see and do without the expense of New York. It's impossible to say how much you'd need a day, but I'd say £40 minimum even if you're working off a very low budget. I'd recommend looking for air fares in January as most of the major airlines have sales on at that time of year so you might be able to get a good deal.

Time-wise, you'd probably want to go for at least 4 days (essentially a long weekend). It's a long journey there and if you stay for any less time you'll be too knackered to enjoy it.

American Bears And Transport.?

Has anyone hired a cadilac escelade or a lincoln navigator in america?
Are they expensive to run given that petrol is cheap in comparison to the uk?
Also can you see bears easily in the San Gabriel Mountains?

Answer
Big SUVs are expensive to rent, buy, maintain and run, and they are out of style. My son attends private school and a few years back the parking lot looked like an upscale SUV sales floor, but not any more, and most of the parents are not having financial problems. It's just ridiculously expensive and looks kind of gauche to be driving one now considering the economy.

You can see bears in neighborhoods that back up to the SG Mountains, like in Pasadena/Altadena, Sierra Madre, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, etc, if you're around when the bear happens to be going for a swim or looking for yummys in trash cans, or sometimes they look like they're just going for a walk. But the rangers come and try to take them away quickly. And then the bears come back, and the rangers take them even further, and then some still come back again. In some neighborhoods it's a weekly occurrence during certain times of the year.

They're not easy to find in the SG Mountains, but they are around, my son's scout troop has seen them on several occasions. That's why there is the strict rule of NO FOOD, not a crumb, in the tents. They take all the food and hang it on a rope between trees far away from the campsite, or use bear canisters. You don't leave it in your car, unless you want to take a chance on it getting destroyed. My dh thinks it's fun to look for bear scat and tree scratchings at places like Wilderness Park in Arcadia, Camp Trask in Monrovia, and Eaton Canyon in Altadena. (ugh)

Here are just some of the Altadena sightings last August and September, there were more on the other side of Eaton Canyon.

In Monrovia alone, in 2009 they took over 450 bear calls.

Here's a video of 2 bears at Camp Trask, an area that lots of scouts camp, and kids go on field trips with their schools because it is so close to the city.

Personally, I wouldn't go looking for bears. Most aren't as timid like the little bear that kept coming to visit a Pasadena neighborhood. The rangers kept taking her further and further into the forest, but she kept wandering back. The ranger said that she was a preemie so her mom kept her a year longer than she should have, so the little bear wasn't acclimated to forest life when she should have been. When the cops would come by to warn everyone over the loud speakers, she'd try to make herself invisible, huddling against houses. That same neighborhood gets bears every year. These bears can move really fast, hustle up a tree in no time. I'd avoid them!

Good luck!
