Some friends and I are trying to arrange a one or two-night camping trip. We want to stay local because some have never camped before. We also want a cheap campground; nothing to pricey. So if anyone knows any cheap campgrounds in South Jersey or about an hour drive away let me know.

Camping in New Jersey?
Chelsea
I was just wondering if any one could tell me of somewhere I could camp near Madison New Jersey. I want to camp there but can't find anywhere. Thank you!
Answer
There are no camping locations in the immediate vicinity of Madison. I'm not sure why you'd want to camp there, as this is fully-developed, prime suburban real estate, mostly upper and top middle class neighborhoods. There are several commercial campgrounds and state parks 30 to 60 minutes northwest of Madison in Sussex County.
Fla-Net RV Park in Flanders would be the closest if you are camping in an RV (trailer or self-propelled). I've stayed there and its a nice, quiet park, right off Route 80, next to the a large shopping area.
Panther Lake in Andover is fairly close. I haven't stayed there but my brother-in-law did with his family a few years back and said it was nice. Not sure if they have any tent locations.
Swartswood State Park (in Swartswood) has tent and small RV campsites, bathrooms and an RV dump station, and is possibly the closest tent camping location. I've stayed here a few times and its a very nice family camping location. Stokes State Forest in Sussex also has sites for tents and small RV's, and also rents cabins, and has a lot to offer in terms of hiking, scenery and wildlife, but is about 60 minutes from Madison. Stokes is my favorite local camping area.
