"Near" is a relative term. There isn't much in and around LA proper, since real estate is much too expensive. Within 100 miles, you have a selection of campgrounds for tent camping. Try some of these campgrounds, listed roughly north to south). State campgrounds can be reserved at www.reserveamerica.com:
Refugio State Beach, north of Santa Barbara
El Capitan State Beach, practically next door, 2 miles away.
Carpinteria State Beach, 12 miles south/east of Santa Barbara.
McGrath State Beach, Ventura
Point Mugu State Park, near Oxnard
Malibu Creek State Park, near Agoura
Leo Carrillo State Park
Pomona KOA, next to Fairplex
Doheney State Beach, Dana Point
San Clemente State Beach:
San Onofre State Beach: Right by the nuclear power plant. Not my favorite.
South Carlsbad State Beach, close to Legoland
San Elijo State Beach, Leucadia
Campland on the Bay: Private campground on the north end of Mission Bay for RV's, but tents are allowed.

Anyone been camping in Los Angeles?

My family and I (along with our 2 small dogs) would like to go camping this weekend but are clueless as to where we can go. We want somewhere we can pitch a tent, park our van and just chill. If it has a lake, even better! And not too far from the city 2 hours max! I remember going to a site north from the West Covina area it was real nice and we took a dirt road to get there, and had to pay a fee to camp. Any ideas where we can go?

You will probably need to look for a first come site as most reservable sites are booked for the weekends through summer. Near you is the Angeles national forest and there are 100's of first come sites throughout the district. County Parks also have sites but again booked for the weekends. Chilao is one of the largest first come campgrounds and if you leave friday morning you will be sure to get a spot. One of my favorites that fills quickly is Apple-white its in the lytle creek area. Another is south fork on big rock creek.
