What are the best camping spots near San Diego?

I would want there to be a lake or river if possible. Please only provide me with 2-3 of your favorite campgrounds and not a whole list. Otherwise I won't be able to make a good decision.

Thanks!

Answer
In San Diego county there aren't any really outstanding campgrounds near rivers or lakes, but here are some you might enjoy. I have camped at all of them, unlike some of the other responses here which seem pretty clearly to come from copying the internet as opposed to having actually been there.

Green Valley Falls Campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park comes to mind as it's right near a river and there's nice hiking. My only hesitation in recommending it outright is that it's in an area affected by recent wildfires and they've been clearing trees out of there recently. I'd suggest you contact the rangers for an update. It's got mostly giant oaks there along with a few pines. It's in a mountainous area with lots of nice hikes. And it's not too far a drive. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_ID=667

Another nice place near water would be Palomar Mt State Park, Doane Pond Campground. It probably takes only 20 minutes to walk around Doane Pond so it's not too big but I have seen people fish there, so it's big enough for that. There are also several creeks that run through the park and beautiful views to the ocean on clear days. It's quite nice up there, and next to the park is the famous Mt. Palomar Observatory, which is open to the public but you have to check out ahead of time the days and hours as it's limited visiting. Since it has a famous telescope there (actually a number of them on site) you know that it's a pretty good place for clear skies at night and star watching. However, it's elevation is high enough that if you plan to go camping soon, if you are going to be in a tent as opposed to an RV, it's going to be getting cold soon at night. http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/637/files/palomarmountain.pdf

A third place I thought about is in the Pine Hills area near Julian, at a county campground called William Heise County Park. It's very pretty there, pretty hikes, one spectacular hike through the mountains and trees with a panoramic viewpoint of the desert and the Salton Sea. Bonus if you are going soon is that you pass an orchard right outside the park boundaries with apples you either buy by the pound on the honor system, already picked, or you can go out into the orchards and buy your own. They taste so much better than what you buy in the stores, you'll want to get some for family and friends. Not much in the way of water features but as I said, it's a pretty park. http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/parks/Camping/heise.html

If you would like camping by the beach South Carlsbad is nice, but it's a little strange as you camp very close to a road and there's road noise that might be irritating if you're camping in a tent. However, on the other side is a spectacular ocean view and access. I'd guess if you were in an RV or use earplugs you'd do fine. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=660

Another option would be the San Mateo Campground near Camp Pendleton which has a wonderful trail to the beach along a river canyon to the famous surf spot the Tressles. The campground isn't particularly good or bad, sort of undistinguished, and it's strange that you can hear the shooting range at Pendleton in the background sometimes. But the trail thru the canyon to the beach is really quite unique and beautiful http://www.caopenspace.org/trestles.html

Beach camping in San Diego??

Q. Im in charge of planning my club camping trip for this year, and we decided to go camping on the beach. Are there any good campsites on or really close to the beach that might still have open spots? It has to take tent camps too.

Answer
Check out San Elijo. It's more north, but it's pretty awesome for camping. I went in January actually and it was beautiful. :)

What are some good places to camp on a trip from San Francisco to San Diego?

best tent camping san diego on ... southern CA and have locations in orange county and san diego county

I'm going to be traveling by car from San Francisco to San Diego over the course of a week and a half, camping in a tent along the way. Since I have a week to make this trip, it doesn't matter if I take a roundabout route (for example, going inland all the way to the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't bother me).

What are some good places for me to camp on the trip? I prefer to be as secluded as possible, to get away from it all. Also, the cheaper the better!

Thanks!

Answer
As I see it, you have 2 choices: Beach route or inland route. Doing both would take you a lot more than a week.

If you want to head inland, you can always take off from S.F. and head to Lake Tahoe. It is about 5 hours to drive. Then, I'd head south into Yosemite. Your only downfall about these two places is that it is summer and you might be hard-pressed to find a campsite. NO JOKE--in Yosemite Valley you usually have to reserve a campsite 6 months in advance. You might have more luck finding sites that are outside the park. (From Lake Tahoe to Yosemite, take highway 395) After Yosemite you could either stick with the 395 and head to Death Valley, then Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree. You could also leave Yosemite on the 120 and head to Interstate 5, which can take you to places like King's Canyon and Sequoia National Park, and then into the LA area.

If you wanted to go the beach route, skip the 1 (it will take much, much more than a week) and go on the 101. It gives you easy access to Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Big Sur, and San Simeon (Hearst Castle is a must see!), Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, The Santa Monica Mountains (you can hike there to see where the show MASH was filmed), Hollywood, and then to Interstate 5 which will drive down the Southern California coast and into San Diego.

My husband and I have done these trips many times and they are fabulous either way. It just depends on what you want to see. The coastal route offers many beach sites to camp. For a good reference on camping, I would recommend the book "California Camping;" that's our Bible.

Have fun!!!!

Where can you camp out with family around san diego ?

best tent camping san diego on How to Plan a Camping Trip to the Rocky Mountains
best tent camping san diego image

pinksmooth

My family & I are planning to camp this summer and we have no idea where to camp.
We want to actually sleep in tents and have a campfire going. I dont want it to be in the wild , but we want to go to a campground where its not crowded and we have our own little spot to put our tents and tell stories. there needs to be bathrooms there too. haha

p.s It needs to be in san diego or anywhere close to there.

Answer
the Dixon Lake Campground in Escondido can be fun.

it's not in the wild (it's on the edge of the old Daley Ranch),
you will have your own little spot,
bathrooms (some with showers)
fun little lake to fish in (no swimming)

but... no wood in the fire pits, coals only
-----------------------
there is good beach camping in San Diego, but by now all the spots have been reserved for the entire summer.

where are good camping locations in the san diego area or by the colorado river in arizona?

Jose Herna

I want to go camping with my family but I am not familiar with any places in san diego or somewhere near by the colorado river in arizona that i can go camping. I'm looking for a place that's fun, hiking, tents and/or cabin facilities, somewhere where they have rivers or some kind of water. Can someone recommend some really nice place to go camping ?

Answer
If you're able to get to Arizona and want a great family friendly trip, I would highly recommend the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This area offers some of the best views available of the canyon and the Colorado River. Accommodations range from deluxe cabins to primitive tent camping areas.

Growing up, our family spent three summers at the North Rim and I have many happy memories from those trips.

Here are some good pages to do the research:
