I have never been camping and I want to try it with a few friends. I live in So Cal and I hear Nor Cal has a better camping experience... So any good experiences/suggestions? Nothing too hardcore though, my survival skills in the wilderness isn't so vast... I don't even have a tent yet.

Answer
I just got back from Calavaras Big Trees SP and it was great - huge campsites, easy hikes, amazing scenery, fishable/swimmable rivers, and over half empty during the week. We also visited the local caverns and went spelunking - I highly recommend it!

Big Basin, Portola Redwoods, New Brighton, and Pfieffer Big Sur are all favorites, but can be crowded. They all have restrooms and running water - so none too hardcore. Look into ranger-led hikes before budget cuts take them away.

What are some good places to tent/car camp within 3 hour drive from San Jose, CA?

Seems like every time I go camping, it's always the same no matter where I go. Very dry and brown. Dirt. Slimy or dirty lake.

Maybe this time some place with green grass, nice trees, and a nice lake or river to play in.

Answer
- Big Basin, it's in the Santa Cruz mountains.
- Big Sur, beautiful drive down HWY 1 and you'll also be able to support the regrowth of the area after the fires last summer. Big Sur has amazing hiking, beaches, waterfalls and near Carmel is "the greatest meeting of land and sea", Point Lobos.
- The Pinnacles National Monument (East Side) has a swimming pool and amazing caves to explore.
- Sunset / Manresa beach near Watsonville

All of the above mentioned places are within 2 hours or less of San Jose. Big Basin is about 40 minutes, Big Sur is about 1.5 hours, and Pinnacles is just past Hollister.

Call all of these places beforehand and you will be able to reserve a site and learn about what trails are open.
